Description
Snapmaker U1 is a multi-color FDM 3D printer featuring the unique SnapSwap tool-changing system. The printer is designed for both enthusiasts and advanced users who need multi-color printing with minimal material waste. The U1's standout feature is four independent direct-drive extruders on a CoreXY system, enabling color changes in just 5 seconds instead of 90 seconds on competing systems.
The build volume measures 270 x 270 x 270 mm, with print speeds up to 300 mm/s and acceleration up to 20,000 mm/s². The printer is built on a CoreXY system with carbon fiber X-axis rails. A built-in AI camera detects print failures, while Klipper firmware with Input Shaping and Pressure Advance calibrations ensures quality even at high speeds. Maximum flow rate reaches 32 mm³/s through stainless steel nozzles heated up to 300°C.
Advantages
- 5-second toolhead swaps — the SnapSwap system changes the entire toolhead, saving up to 80% filament compared to AMS-type feeding systems
- Multi-color print quality — toolhead alignment accuracy of 0.04 mm, minimal artifacts at color transitions (Tom's Hardware, 4.5/5)
- Multi-material printing — four independent extruders allow combining PLA, PETG, TPU, and soluble PVA supports in a single project
- Quiet operation — 55 dB at normal speed, 49 dB with optional top cover, suitable for home use
- Automatic calibration — mesh bed leveling, vibration compensation, toolhead offset calibration, and pressure advance tuning
- Easy setup — ships nearly assembled, automatic filament loading with RFID spool recognition
Drawbacks
- Open frame — printing ABS, ASA, and nylon requires an additional top cover (sold separately for $249)
- No spool protection — filament on open holders is exposed to moisture and dust, a dryer is recommended
- Early connectivity bugs — some users reported Wi-Fi issues on early firmware versions (TechRadar)
- Requires 4 spools — full multi-color printing demands a complete filament set for all toolheads
The Snapmaker U1 is ideal for multi-color printing enthusiasts, makers, and advanced hobbyists who want to print colorful models, figurines, and decorative elements without mountains of waste. The printer is especially cost-effective for those who regularly print multi-color models — filament savings pay for themselves over time.
The Snapmaker U1 is a serious competitor to multi-color systems like the Bambu Lab AMS. The printer raised $20M on Kickstarter and earned a 4.5/5 rating from Tom's Hardware as the best multi-color 3D printer. At $849 for pre-order, it's one of the most affordable tool changer solutions on the market.
