Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra Mods: 28 Upgrades From Film to Firmware
A working list of 28 Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra mods: why the branded PFA pack doesn't fit, how to vent outside through the stock port, how to heat resin in winter, what UVtools breaks, and how to monitor prints on a machine with no camera. With prices and links.
The Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra is a 2023 MSLA resin printer built around a 10-inch 11520×5120 mono LCD, a 218.88×122.88×260 mm build volume, stock ACF release film and a claimed 150 mm/h top speed. It lists at $299 on Elegoo's own store, $254.99 refurbished, and it's priced at $297.74 in the Printer Hub catalogue.
Three years in, the mod list for this machine is well settled. Some of it patches real design misses — plate screws that fill with resin, and a hood you've got nowhere to put. Some of it is consumables and heating. And a big chunk lives in software and networking, because Elegoo shipped the network side half-finished and then moved on. Here are 28 mods people actually run, with prices, links to the original models, and honest notes where a mod doesn't work. 1. Pull the rubber plugs out of the build plate screws
Cheapest mod on the list: free, and it takes a minute. The hex screws holding the build plate are capped with small soft plugs meant to stop resin from filling the sockets. In practice a plug works loose, ends up under the plate and gets pressed straight through the film. One owner spelled it out under FauxHammer's review: his third calibration print failed, a plug had popped out of a screw and the plate crushed it into the ACF. A second owner, TryptychUK, got the same hole in his film the same way.

2. Build plate drip mount
The most downloaded printed accessory for this machine. The mount clips onto the gantry, the plate tilts over the vat and the resin runs back where it came from instead of onto your desk. It matters more here than on older machines: unlike the Saturn 2, you cannot stand the Saturn 3 Ultra plate upright on the vat lip — the geometry changed, which is exactly why Saturn 2 plate holders don't fit.
- Returns a meaningful amount of resin that would otherwise drip somewhere else
- Frees both hands — no holding a dripping plate over the vat
- Baremeg10's version tilts on two axes so everything runs to one corner, and it stays clipped on during printing
- Prints straight on the bed of any FDM machine, no supports needed
Difficulty: easy, any FDM printer will do. Cost: 30–60 g of filament. Material: PLA+, PETG or ABS — the author of the second model suggests 0.2–0.25 mm layers, 1.6 mm walls, 4 perimeters and 15 % infill. Models: Printables 626005 with 134 likes and 2,020 downloads, where the author confirmed Saturn 3 Ultra fitment in an update; Printables 645877 at 103 and 1,756; Printables 1048853 for the arm version; and the two-axis version on Cults3D.
3. Vat lid: keep resin in the tank between prints
By the book you're supposed to funnel the resin back into the bottle after every print. A vat lid cancels that ritual: close it and the resin waits for the next job without collecting dust or catching ambient UV. vd853's version prints diagonally, needs one screw removed and still lets the printer hood close with the lid in place. InaniaEtVana's sealed version adds a TPU gasket, so the fumes stay in too.

- Thejiral's storage set makes vats stackable: a vat with covers drops into a 7 L airtight container

Difficulty: easy. Cost: filament, plus a container if you go the storage route. Material: chemical-resistant PETG — the lid author warns about warping and recommends a glue stick, a brim and an enclosure. Models: Printables 814088, the sealed MakerWorld 191866, and Printables 291098, where an update confirms the Saturn 3 Ultra vat fits.
4. Drip tray: insurance against a leak onto the screen
A resin leak is the one failure that costs a third of the printer to repair: the LCD carries a 3-month warranty that explicitly excludes leaks, and a replacement panel is $129.99 from Elegoo or $86.65 in the catalogue. 4cmclean's pan sits under the whole machine and catches whatever runs down the chassis; LabCrow's overflow tray acts as a second containment layer right on top of the stock vat.
- Catches an ordinary film leak — the author is honest that it won't hold a spill that lands with force
- Saves the desk and the floor: resin doesn't come off a worktop without IPA
- The pan prints as 16 glued parts and ships with 3mf, STP and a PDF assembly diagram
- The overflow tray carries no load, so it prints thin: 0.4 mm walls, one perimeter, 5 % gyroid
Difficulty: medium — both print in pieces and need gluing. Cost: 300–600 g of filament. The overflow tray needs a 435×245 mm bed if printed whole, so the author splits it and joins the halves with pins and CA glue. Models: Printables 694932 and Printables 1230105.
5. Drain stand and a filter funnel
When you do have to drain — a colour change, say — the question becomes what to filter through and how to hold the vat over it. Elegoo's stainless funnel with a mesh filter is $2.21 in the catalogue and, unlike plastic ones, doesn't cloud up from resin. 3dtombud's stand holds the vat upright over the funnel, and Tinteex's model lets you drain the plate straight into a bottle neck.

- A metal funnel cleans up with IPA and lasts for years
- Tinteex's model needs a short screw of the same diameter as the stock plate handle — the stock handle blocks the bottle
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $2.21 for the funnel plus filament. One caveat on 3dtombud's stand: it isn't fully printed — you need 4 and 6 mm MDF and 5 mm laser-cut acrylic. Models: Printables 1217075 and Printables 640460.
6. Stock up on ACF film and replace it properly
Film is consumable number one and the only part with no warranty at all. Stock ACF for the Saturn 3 Ultra is a 290×195 mm sheet, 0.3 mm thick, 92 % UV transmittance, composite, and it goes in matte side down against the screen. A five-pack is $69.99 from Elegoo and $50.76 in the Printer Hub catalogue — roughly $10 per replacement.
The official procedure runs like this: a 3 mm hex driver takes out four locating screws on the vat, a 2.5 mm driver takes out twelve screws holding the clamp assembly, and a 2 mm driver takes out the 28 screws of the assembly itself. The new sheet goes in with the larger holes under the top plate, glossy side up toward the resin, and you trim the excess with a craft knife. Reassembly is the reverse: 28 screws one at a time, then three screws diagonally and the remaining nine, then the four locating screws. Elegoo publishes no torque figures — snug is snug.
- The cloudy look is normal, not a defect: ACF is a composite and never looks clear
- Film vendors put ACF life around 30,000 layers against roughly 10,000 for plain FEP — a vendor estimate, not an owner measurement
- A sane routine: inspect every 10–15 prints, replace preventively every 50–60 print hours
- ACF does not like plastic scrapers — owner davidc7763 punctured his with one and switched to nFEP afterwards
- You'll want an 80×80×8 mm foam block; the official instructions use it to press the sheet flat

7. Third-party film instead of stock ACF: check the size, not the name
"Just buy plain PFA, it's half the price" is standard forum advice, and on this machine it trips over the sheet size. Stock ACF for the Saturn 3 Ultra measures 290×195 mm. Elegoo's PFA pack sold "for Saturn 2/8K/3/4/4 Ultra" is a 273×176 mm sheet, and the Saturn 3 Ultra is absent from its compatibility list. Seventeen and nineteen millimetres short means the sheet simply won't reach the clamp holes.
Cheaper film does exist — you just have to shop by dimensions rather than by printer name. Chitu Systems sells a 290×210 mm ACF sheet at $19.99 each or $45.99 for three, and its product description names the Saturn 3 Ultra explicitly alongside the Saturn 3, Saturn 4 and Saturn 4 Ultra. Generic 290×210 mm film is widely available too. Both are slightly oversized, which is fine: the official procedure already tells you to trim the excess with a knife after tightening.
- Do the maths before you switch: at $45.99 for three, Chitu film works out at $15.33 a sheet against $14 in Elegoo's own five-pack, so buying direct is actually cheaper in the US. Third-party film wins on availability, on nFEP options, and in markets where the branded pack is marked up two to three times
- Switching film type changes how the machine behaves: J3D Tech's test showed ACF cuts peel force sharply but softens fine detail
- Plenty of owners run two vats — "an ACF vat for speed and an nFEP vat for detail", as CatLife0 put it
- One owner measured the practical limit on this printer: 0.025 mm cutouts printed fine, 0.02 mm filled in — anti-aliasing in the slicer helps
- Elegoo's "three times faster" claim is tied to its own rapid resin, not to the film on its own
Difficulty: medium — same procedure as stock film plus careful trimming. Cost: about $10–20 per sheet. Check the sheet size before you buy: you want 290×195 mm or slightly larger. And if you're chasing the speed claim, run it with the resin the claim was actually made about.
8. A second vat: swap resin in a minute
A second vat isn't a luxury, it's how you stop draining the tank every time you change colour. Elegoo's metal tank for the Saturn 3 Ultra is $57.99 on the store and $34.65 in the Printer Hub catalogue. It's aluminium, 292.8×172.4×33 mm, and it sits on feet so the tensioned film never touches your bench. It arrives with ACF already fitted, so it works straight out of the box.
- Colour or resin type change is three screws and a minute, instead of drain, filter and wash
- Pairs naturally with the "ACF for speed, nFEP for detail" approach — one film per tank
- While one tank soaks, the printer keeps running on the other
- The feet protect the film whenever the tank is off the machine
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $34.65. If you swap films often, look at the Chitu Systems Hoopat X3 quick-release tank at $69.99–89.99 — film changes without screws, and the revised version adds a silicone gasket; the seller lists Saturn 2, Saturn 3 and Saturn 3 Ultra fitment. Owner Plane_Consequence358 calls it his purchase of the year in his mod rundown on r/ElegooSaturn, right alongside a brewer's belt.
9. Magnetic flex plate: what it actually requires
The flex plate is the most contested mod here, which is exactly why it deserves the detail. Wham Bam sells plates for this machine — a 225×129 mm Flexi Plate at $26 and the XTR at $36 with a 0.6 mm spring steel sheet and a 3 mm magnetic base. The kit raises the print surface by roughly 2.6 mm in the standard version and 3.8 mm in XTR, which is why you re-level after fitting it either way.
This is where the forums and the manufacturer part ways. Forum advice is to print a Z-probe spacer: SolarForge's adds 2.5 mm and mounts between the Z probe and the gantry on the original screws, tested on firmware 1.5.4, while Dalankar's is 2.45 mm and built for the Fulament Fula-Flex, with an honest note that he hadn't tested it. Wham Bam's own support page, meanwhile, lists the Saturn 3 Ultra among the machines that need no Z-stop extension at all — loosen the levelling screws, re-level, done, because the adjustment range absorbs the extra height. That explains the split in owner reports: some fitted a plate with no spacer and were fine, others printed one and were fine too. If your adjustment range doesn't absorb it and you do fit an extension, get longer M3×8 screws — the stock ones won't reach — and mount it carefully, because the spacer's author warns plainly that poor mounting destroys screens.
- What you gain: models pop off by flexing the plate — no scraper, no freezer, no gouged build surface
- What you give up: roughly 2.6 mm of Z height on the standard kit and 3.8 mm on XTR, plus a mandatory re-level
- Owner reports differ, but the manufacturer's list explains why. Disastrous-Panda5530 runs a Wham Bam plate with no spacer and no trouble — exactly what Wham Bam prescribes for this model; samba9876 regrets buying one, "easier to scrape them off than to remove the plate and clean both sides"; Ragnarocke1 learned about re-levelling the hard way
- Sanding the laser-etched plate isn't mandatory. Per Wham Bam's own explanation, sanding exists so the 3M adhesive meets bare metal rather than cured resin. Owner luke3_ sanded by hand and burned through about £20 of wet-and-dry paper
- Manufacturer limit: never leave the plate on the magnetic base with resin trapped between them for more than two hours
Difficulty: medium if you stick to re-levelling, high if you do fit a Z-stop extension — that's where a mistake costs a screen. Cost: $26–36 for the plate plus a printed spacer if you need one. Worth knowing before you order: Fulament had a factory packaging issue where plates sized for the Saturn 2 and Saturn 3 shipped without the magnetic adhesive sheet, so one owner never got to fit his at all. 10. Screen protection and screen replacement
The Saturn 3 Ultra ships with 9H tempered glass over the LCD, so a protector film isn't mandatory. Glass still breaks, though — one owner smashed his by starting a print with a model left sitting on the plate. A protector film is $7.32 in the catalogue and acts as the part that dies instead of the panel. The panel itself is $129.99 from Elegoo, $86.65 in the catalogue, and Chitu Systems sells a compatible unit at $99.99.
- Panel life is around 2,000 hours by Elegoo's own figure — four times a traditional RGB screen
- The LCD warranty is 3 months and covers neither resin leaks, nor damaged protective film, nor impacts
- A protector film costs twelve times less than the panel — the cheapest insurance in this article

Difficulty: applying film is easy, swapping a panel is medium and unforgiving. Cost: $7.32 and $86.65 respectively. 11. The stock Elegoo Mini Heater: five minutes to fit, hard-locked at 25 °C
Cold is the main reason winter prints fail. Elegoo's own figures put the working range at 25–30 °C in the manual and 25–35 °C in the wiki, with prints starting to fail below 20 °C. The stock mini heater is $55 on the store and $29.01 in the catalogue, runs a 120 W PTC element, and fits the Saturn 3 Ultra without cutting anything: a 2.5 mm hex driver removes four screws from the factory filler plate, the bracket goes in its place with two 2.5 mm screws, and the heater mounts with two 2.0 mm screws, display facing inward.
Then come the caveats. The setpoint is hard-wired at 25 °C — it kicks in below, shuts off above, and you cannot change it. Owner Starganderfish put the complaint plainly: engineering resins want 28 to 30 °C, and this heater simply won't get you there. Worse, some batches shipped with a faulty heater mainboard whose on/off cycle prints straight into the model as horizontal banding. J3D Tech's test video with a self-check procedure has 26,600 views, owner the-old-tower confirmed banding from 24 mm upward, and redline3090 got a replacement heater board from Elegoo under warranty.
- Mounts in the factory filler plate — no drilling, which is its main advantage over DIY heating
- One owner's measurements: air under the hood went 19 → 25 °C in a couple of minutes, but the resin itself needed an hour; draw is 110 W warming up and 4 W holding
- A printed deflector fixes the turbulence problem — it clips onto the stock bracket and works on intake or exhaust
- The adjustable alternative is the Chitu Systems H2 at $51.99, with a 0–85 °C range and over-temperature cutoff
- Know this before you buy: the heater and an exhaust adapter want the same hole in the hood
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $29.01. The hood-port conflict gets raised bluntly under Elegoo's own install video — "what do you do if you're already using that hole for extraction?" The working answer came from owner cthgts: an external heater aimed at the printer's intakes plus the air purifier pulling warm air through the system. Install guide is in the Elegoo wiki, the deflector is Printables 1498436, and the Chitu heater bracket is Printables 735648 — print it in PC or PETG, the author explicitly advises against PLA.
12. Brewer's belt and a thermostat: heat the resin, not the air
A brewer's belt is what the community recommends more often than the branded heater, and it's cheaper. The logic is simple: you want to heat the mass of resin, not the air around it, so the belt goes either around the vat or around the hood. Owner robclarke1098 wrapped one around the hood and watched the internal temperature climb from 15 to 27 °C; the only side effect was slight clouding of the acrylic where the belt touched. kyang321 went further — belt around the vat, a printed clamp, and a thermostat socket with its probe inside the tank: "back to back prints with no failures".
Other owners run variations on the same idea. marco_carrillo pairs a belt with a cheap AliExpress thermostat and holds 23 °C. Russian-language builds document the same approach with hard numbers: one owner settled on a 1 m, 30 W automotive heating strip clamped to the vat with binder clips and a digital controller, holding +35 to +37 °C, while another combined a fermentation belt with a thermostat socket, printed clips and a hood riser to route the cable. None of it needs a soldering iron, and all of it lets you pick your own setpoint.
- Cheaper than the branded heater and, unlike it, the temperature is yours to choose
- You're heating the resin mass, which is what actually drives viscosity and peel force
- The "preheat then switch off" tactic works too: claudiosettiart heats for 30 minutes, kills the heater, and the machine itself keeps the resin near 26 °C for the rest of the print
- A printed housing puts the external controller on the Z tower with 1 mm clearance to the carriage — print it in chemical-resistant PETG or ASA, 4 perimeters
- The symptom this fixes is unmistakable: a band of grainy, orange-peel layers roughly a centimetre tall, right where the room got coldest overnight
Difficulty: medium — mains wiring and a thermostat deserve respect. Cost: $20–40 for a belt plus a thermostat socket. One important counterpoint: owner karlh6692 warns that PTC heaters blowing straight at the Z axis cause artefacts, because the aluminium column and the steel rails expand at different rates. 13. A pair of 12 V heaters on printed brackets
When one heater isn't enough, the next step is two 12 V 5 A heaters on printed brackets that sit above the stock carbon filters on either side of the machine. Two sources on opposite sides heat the chamber far more evenly than one, and neither of them blows directly at your model.
- Even chamber heating instead of one hot corner
- Brackets sit on existing surfaces above the carbon filters
- The author insists on hot glue specifically, because nothing else comes off the chassis afterwards
- Wiring is the serious part: do not run both heaters off one stock barrel connector. The author says so in capitals — it will get hot. You need a 12 V 10 A supply and 14 AWG wiring
Difficulty: high — this is mains-adjacent wiring inside a closed enclosure. Cost: two heaters plus a proper power supply. The bracket model is Printables 714407. This mod has a mandatory companion: you have to get that cable inside somehow, which is the next item.
14. Hood riser: get a cable inside without drilling
Every internal heating mod runs into the same question: how do you get power inside the chamber. Drilling the acrylic hood is permanent and hurts resale. A riser answers it differently — it lifts the hood a few millimetres and gives you a ready-made cable channel. 4cmclean's version is built specifically for the Saturn 3 Ultra; gltovar's 25 mm riser is more universal, though the author is careful to note that Ultra fitment was reported by users in the comments rather than tested by him.

- It also adds a little chamber volume, which helps when you're heating it
- gltovar ships a STEP file of the hood rim plus a link to free OnShape, so you can reshape the channel for your own cable
- There's a remix by Modest541 with the cable entry moved 70 mm from the right edge to suit a Chitu heater; it contains only the two rear corners, the rest comes from the original
Difficulty: medium — 4cmclean's riser prints as 8 large and 4 small parts with 20 pins and hot glue, and ships with a PDF diagram. Cost: filament. Models: Printables 714046, Printables 315341, Printables 802496, and a vented variant at Printables 805584.
15. Vent outside through the stock port
This is the mod with the biggest effect on your health and the only one that genuinely removes the smell. The Saturn 3 Ultra has a factory port in the rear of the hood — the manual calls it an Extension Port and intends it for peripherals like the heater. Elegoo doesn't publish its diameter, so the community built adapters for every common size: 32, 50, 60, 80 and 100 mm. The author of the most popular design got written confirmation from Elegoo's R&D team that this port is dimensionally identical across the whole Saturn and Mars line.
His argument about diameter is worth adopting: pushing air through 100 mm ducting out of roughly 57 litres of chamber is overkill, so his system is built around 32 mm pipe and works with the stock carbon filter still in place. Everything mounts on the factory port cover using the original M3 screws — exactly 15 mm long, no longer, or the backing plate fouls the filter.
- The stock carbon filters recirculate air rather than exhausting it — that's the fundamental limit an extraction mod removes
- One owner's real-world result in a small enclosed balcony: cheap carbon filters did nothing, while a 298 m³/h inline fan with ducting solved it
- Another owner built a plywood cabinet with 40 mm insulation, extraction and a silicone heater with a thermostat — no smell at all with the fan running
- Air quality measurements on another resin printer showed VOC and formaldehyde well above normal during printing, while the UV hood does nothing to filter the air
- A warning from the author of the 4-inch dryer-hose adapter: the silver hose that comes with window kits is non-standard and will not fit a printed adapter — the black one does
Difficulty: medium — print an adapter, add an inline fan and ducting. Cost: from $40 for a fan and hose. Models by diameter: Printables 283993 (32 mm, 147 likes and 1,463 downloads), Printables 671524 (50 mm, with a full bill of materials), Printables 818824 (60 mm, magnetic) and Printables 1189568 (4-inch dryer hose). 16. A second USB purifier and the Mars Mate: the honest maths
One of the few places where the Ultra is more generous than the plain Saturn 3: it reserves two USB sockets for purifiers and ships with one occupied. A second one is a drop-in — a two-pack is $28 from Elegoo and $16.62 in the catalogue. The next step up is the Mars Mate at $139 on the store and $85.28 in the catalogue: CTC100 columnar activated carbon, up to 95 % VOC capture, 35 dB, 6 W draw, a built-in VOC sensor and a filter rated for about two months.
Now the honest part. One long-form owner review calls the Mars Mate a strange purchase: with the hood closed there's barely any smell anyway, and once you open the hood no filter is going to help. A comment with 112 upvotes under another review puts it more sharply — carbon filters cut odour, not hazardous fumes, and treating them as protection is a mistake. So the priority order is extraction first, filtration second.

- A replacement carbon cartridge is $89.99 from Elegoo and $63.39 in the catalogue — at two months per filter that adds up
- Its indicator turns red at 1,440 filter hours or 1.4 ppm, and the fan alternates automatically: 50 minutes low, 10 minutes high
- The stock purifier fan only spins during a print — that's firmware behaviour, not a fault
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $16.62 for a pair of USB units, $85.28 for the Mars Mate. If your filter seems dead the moment you power the printer on, check the official wiki page first — it isn't supposed to run outside a print.
17. A printed tilting hood
The most everyday complaint about this machine: the removable hood has to go somewhere every single time, and there is nowhere clean to put it because the inside is covered in resin. sergeleger designed a hinged hood and released it for free — 30 likes, 288 downloads, 13 files including a PDF and ready g-code. It has mounting provisions for the Elegoo mini heater, the stock filtration, a mini Wi-Fi camera and LED lighting, which means it quietly solves four other topics from this article at once.
- The hood tilts instead of coming off — hands free, bench clean
- Provisions for heater, filtration, lighting and a camera — the last one matters, because this printer has no camera of its own
- Released free and properly documented
- The extreme version of the same idea is a full printed shell with a window, which owner Plane_Consequence358 built to replace the removable hood entirely
Difficulty: high — not because of the install, but because of the print: the author calls for an FDM machine with a 320×320×385 mm build volume, Neptune 4 Plus class. Cost: 1–1.5 kg of filament. Owner RAHAAON printed it in sections on a Bambu A1 and warns that you'll be gluing parts and that the files aren't flawless. The shell builder is equally frank about a residual gap where air leaks — not critical with extraction running. Model is on Cults3D.
18. Reinforced Z-axis top cover
A rare case of a model built for one specific factory failure. The Z-axis top cover on the Saturn 3 Ultra breaks if you drive the plate all the way up in manual mode: the designer describes the part bending and then snapping at the mount. He redrew it with a thicker body and more rigidity and published it, and it remains the only fix, because the original isn't sold at retail.

- Print it in advance and keep it in a drawer as a spare — there's nowhere to buy the original
- Costs filament, whereas a Z-axis repair through support means a ticket and a wait
- The prevention is the same as always: don't run the plate to the very top manually without a reason
Difficulty: easy to print, medium to fit. Cost: filament. Model is Printables 1061062. The failure itself and its symptoms are covered in our Saturn 3 Ultra known issues guide.
19. Levelling: a printed jig and the correct procedure
The Saturn 3 Ultra uses four-screw levelling, and reviewers disagree about it. 3DWithUs calls the move from two screws to four a step backwards and separately complains that the screws face upward and fill with resin. GamingTrend and The 3D Printer Bee report the opposite — set it once and it stays. Elegoo partly answered the complaint: the current build plate ships with caps over the screws so resin can't get into them.
The official procedure is short: remove the vat, tighten the plate's knob, loosen the four locking screws, put the levelling card down, hit "Move Z axis to zero", press the plate down by hand and tighten the screws. The card should pull out with light resistance — if it won't move, raise Z in 0.1 mm steps; if it slides freely, lower it the same way. Then "Set Z=0", raise Z about 100 mm and verify exposure through Tool → Exposure → Text: the film should show the ELEGOO TECHNOLOGY string.
- The printed jig holds the plate square while you tighten — doing it by hand is genuinely awkward
- There's an "eared" version of the model to stop it warping while it prints
- A distinction people mix up: home is where the limit switch trips and cannot be changed; Z=0 is the first-layer start height, and that's what you're actually setting
- After fitting a flex plate or a Z-probe spacer you must re-level, or the first layer lands in the wrong place
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $0. Jig model is Printables 733427; the home versus Z=0 distinction is explained in the Elegoo wiki. If the first layer still won't hold after perfect levelling, the culprit is usually exposure — which is the next item.
20. Drop the park position 1 mm and cut bottom exposure
Two free tweaks from a detailed owner review that meaningfully extend consumable life. First: after loosening the screws and dropping the plate to the limit switch, lower it another millimetre. Parking then leaves a gap between plate and film, so excess resin is squeezed out gently instead of being crushed against an expensive consumable. Second: cut bottom-layer exposure to 20 seconds — the reviewer started from 30 — at factory settings the raft bonds so hard you have to chisel it off, while at 20 seconds "even large flat rafts come off easily".
- Film wears more slowly because the plate stops bottoming out on it
- Rafts come off without a scraper, so the plate stays free of gouges
- A third trick from the same owner: instead of the freezer, warm the raft with a heat gun for a couple of minutes — supports go flexible and release on their own
- For reference, the factory profile is 2 bottom layers, 35 s bottom exposure, 2.5 s normal, 3+4 mm lift and 90/320 mm/min lift speeds
- The freezer works too, but it brings condensation with it, while cutting exposure solves the same problem for free
Difficulty: medium — you'll recalibrate once. Cost: $0. If models start tearing off their supports after you cut exposure, that's a different problem, and it's covered in the general SLA and MSLA failure guide.
21. Exposure calibration: Cones of Calibration and AmeraLabs Town
The Saturn 3 Ultra has a rectangular pixel — 19 µm on one axis, 24 µm on the other — and that matters for any precision test. There is no built-in exposure range finder in the firmware: nothing in Elegoo's documentation or the wiki mentions one. So you calibrate with models. Cones of Calibration V3 from TableFlip Foundry gives five cones per side plus an Attunement Block for dimensional accuracy — the block measures exactly 6 mm wide and 6 mm tall from the base of the raft. AmeraLabs Town packs ten tests into one model with gaps from 0.1 to 1 mm.
Starting numbers so you're not calibrating from zero. Liqcreate publishes vendor-validated settings for this machine at 50 µm layers, 2 bottom layers, 6 mm lift and 90/120 mm/min lift and retract speeds: Bio-Med Clear 4.5 s with 40 s bottoms, Stone Coal Black 6.0 s with 40 s, Hazard Glow 7.0 s with 60 s, Premium Model 3.5 s with 45 s. Tune in 0.2–0.3 s steps.

- The numbered cones remix on Printables was built for a different printer and verified with different mirroring — re-lay it out for a 218.88×122.88 mm bed before using it here
- Recalibrate after every film change: ACF and nFEP pass UV differently
- And after a change in room temperature: cold resin needs longer exposure
Difficulty: medium, and it's the one job that pays you back on every subsequent print. Cost: $0 plus a little resin. Models: Cones of Calibration V3 and AmeraLabs Town. 22. UVtools: what it really buys you and what it breaks here
UVtools is an open-source editor for sliced files and easily the healthiest project in this ecosystem: version 6.2.0 shipped on 6 August 2026, the latest commit is dated 20 August 2026, and the repository is not archived. It finds islands, overhangs, resin traps and suction cups, edits per-layer exposure, compensates elephant foot, repairs broken layers and even exposes PCB photoresist. The .goo format is supported alongside forty-odd others.
Now the four traps specific to this printer, which are much better learned in advance. First and most expensive: editing per-layer settings sets the PerLayerSettings flag in the file, and the firmware mishandles it — owner Jack-Castleman ended up with a model squashed roughly 4:1 along Z, and the maintainer confirmed the same file with the flag cleared printed fine. Second: circles come out as ellipses, because the pixel is rectangular while the radius is a single number; this is documented as expected behaviour. Third: the built-in exposure finder breaks on some firmware — there's an issue closed as "not planned" where the printer lifts between exposures without returning correctly, though one owner reports it working on 1.5.4. Fourth: you cannot send a job over Wi-Fi from UVtools itself.
- Safe and genuinely useful: the issue detector, elephant foot compensation, blur, layer repair and the calibration generators
- Handle with care: anything that writes per-layer parameters
- A separate quirk — anti-aliasing isn't fully applied on .goo files. Snarky Arts demonstrated it on the plain Saturn 3 and an Ultra owner confirmed it in the comments: "only half of the model gets anti-aliased properly using a .goo file"
- The workaround is slicing to .ctb, but network sending may force .goo, in which case the workaround evaporates
Difficulty: high — powerful tool, expensive mistakes. Cost: $0, AGPL-3.0. The project and every discussion referenced above are on GitHub.
23. Remote monitoring: an app, a CLI and a smart home
The Saturn 3 Ultra has Wi-Fi, but its networking never got past "transfer a file". Elegoo claims 6–10 Mbit/s and GamingTrend measured 6–8. Over-the-air updates don't work at all: both the manual and the printer's own screen say network upgrade is not available yet. The community filled that gap three different ways.
The easy route is Resin Control for iOS and Android. Its changelog for version 1.0.6, dated 15 July 2025, states it outright: full compatibility added for the Saturn 3 Ultra and Mars 4 Ultra. It discovers the printer on the network, shows status and progress, uploads .ctb and .goo files, and starts, pauses and stops prints. The developer explains the protocol split himself: the Saturn 3 Ultra speaks SDCP 1.0, which covers upload, print control and status, while history, camera and notifications only arrived in version 3.0. Fair warning — the newest changelog entry is from July 2025.
The second route is cassini, a command-line tool written and tested specifically on a Saturn 3 Ultra. It reports the status of every printer on the network, streams live progress, uploads files and starts prints; the repository also documents the protocol, including a UDP broadcast on port 3000 that returns a JSON status blob and a command that makes the printer connect to your own MQTT broker. Reality check is mandatory here: the last commit is dated 31 March 2024, there are no releases, the author calls it a work in progress, and an open issue describes hangs after file upload. It works, but nobody is maintaining it.
The third route is Home Assistant. danielcherubini's integration is alive and well: 175 stars, version 2.12.0 from 30 July 2026, and it's in the default HACS catalogue. The Saturn 3 Ultra sits in the legacy section as an SDCP-over-MQTT device in beta. The limits are documented plainly: begin time, end time and cover image sensors read "unknown", while status, layer count and progress work normally. You'll need everything on one network segment and port 1883 open.
- There's also UltraRemote, a Java tool whose 1.0.3 release from 18 February 2024 is described as a fix for protocol changes in firmware 1.5.4. Handy detail: it hooks into Lychee Slicer as an external tool, and the quotes in the command line are mandatory or filenames with spaces break
- What you won't get: OctoEverywhere and Obico don't support resin printers at all — that's an FDM ecosystem
- The ELEGOO Matrix app covers Saturn 4 Ultra 16K, Saturn 4 Ultra and Mars 5 Ultra; the Saturn 3 Ultra is listed neither as supported nor as planned
- SDCP 3.0 isn't coming to this model: the r/ElegooSaturn thread on it ends with the community concluding it's a firmware matter, and that Elegoo has stopped developing the machine

24. Modded firmware with SSH and a network share
Expert territory, where the printer turns into an ordinary network machine. The UltraFirmwareToolkit project builds Saturn 3 Ultra firmware with SSH and Samba enabled; the Saturn 3 Ultra is listed first among supported devices and marked as fully tested. Build 1.5.0.2 from 2 November 2023 gives SSH plus a Windows share, and build 1.5.0.1 from 29 October adds passwordless telnet, which the author recommends keeping strictly on a local network.
The payoff isn't theoretical. Owner Phludd summed it up: constant timeouts when printing over Wi-Fi through Lychee simply stopped once he flashed the modded firmware. There's a side effect worth knowing about too — the author confirmed a USB webcam works on modded firmware via mjpg-streamer, which is the only known way to get a camera on a Saturn 3 Ultra at all. From the same teardown: the stock Chitu application contains USB camera handling code that is never used, and it pins the CPU at 100 % while idle.
- What it gives you: SSH, a network share exposing internal storage and the USB stick, reliable file transfer, and the option of a webcam
- How it installs: file in the root of a USB stick, then Version Upgrade → LNW Upgrade on the printer. The machine checks the filename, so the archive is named 1.5.1 while 1.5.0 is used internally
- How to roll back: download the original firmware from Elegoo and rename the archive so the printer accepts it as newer
- How to revive a bricked machine: if the bootloader is alive, drop ChituUpgrade.bin in the root of a stick and power on — the update starts by itself
- A by-product of the teardown: acceleration and jerk live in a separate parameter file with a checksum, so in theory they're tunable
Difficulty: expert, and the brick risk is real. Cost: $0 and your warranty. The project is on GitHub, and the development story is in the original r/ElegooSaturn thread.
25. Stock firmware updates: USB only, and reboot afterwards
If you'd rather not experiment, the stock update is still worth doing. The current version on Elegoo's download page is V1.6.0, preceded by V1.5.7, V1.5.4, V1.5.2, V1.5.0 and V1.4.3. Elegoo publishes no release dates and changelogs for only three of them: V1.4.3 fixed USB read hangs and false error messages on a failed homing, V1.5.0 tidied the interface, and V1.5.4 fixed normal-layer exposure time display for files from Voxeldance Tango's dynamic mode plus some translations.
- Procedure: archive in the root of a USB stick, Settings → Version Upgrade → Local Upgrade, wait, then reboot. Official wording: without a reboot the new firmware does not take effect
- You cannot update over the network — the manual and the printer's own screen both say network upgrade isn't available yet
- USB stick requirements are strict: FAT32, USB 2.0, 32 GB or less, and no special characters in filenames. Owners recommend replacing the bundled stick immediately
- The documentation contradicts itself: the Z-axis wiki page still calls V1.5.4 the latest version while the download page offers V1.6.0
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $0. Current files are in the Elegoo download centre. If the printer can't see a file on your stick, it's almost always the filesystem or the capacity — the official requirements page covers it.
26. Wash and cure station: the plate will not fit
This one comes down to millimetres. The Saturn 3 Ultra plate measures 218.88×122.88 mm, with prints up to 260 mm tall. The Mercury Plus V3.0 washes up to 214×135×180 mm with a plate and 230×135×260 mm without one. The Mercury XS manages 180×121×153 mm with a plate and 201×124×255 mm without. The conclusion is unavoidable: the Saturn 3 Ultra build plate does not fit any Elegoo station, and the official Mercury XS FAQ confirms it — for Saturn and Jupiter series the build plate must be removed before washing.
- If you print big, buy the Plus V3.0: it takes a near full-height 230×135×260 mm print, while the XS tops out at 201×124×255 mm
- Prices: Mercury XS Bundle $229.99 and Mercury Plus V3.0 $199.99 on the store, $98.65 and $100.84 in the Printer Hub catalogue
- The Plus V3.0 has a 7.5 L bucket, a 250×290 mm curing area, 24 LEDs and a 30-minute timer; the XS bundle ships with a handheld UV lamp and glasses
- Elegoo explicitly does not recommend the washing function for water-washable resins
- Wash in 95 % IPA or stronger, and run a two-container system — a dirty pre-wash and a clean final rinse — to make the alcohol last
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $98.65–100.84 in the catalogue. A practical warning from a long-term owner: in used alcohol, resins from different batches react with each other and drop out as clumps, so the dirty bath needs replacing rather than endless topping up. 27. The maintenance routine that keeps the machine alive
The most underrated mod is a habit. Elegoo recommends greasing the lead screw and linear rails with white lithium grease every two to three months, more often under heavy use. The symptom of skipping it has its own wiki page: the motor buzzes but doesn't turn. The manufacturer's fix is to loosen the anti-backlash nut without over-tightening it, grease the screw and rails, and snug up the Z damper screws.
- Keep resin between one third of the vat and the MAX line
- The mylar tape around the screen is not a seal: wipe spilled resin immediately or a leak will kill the panel
- Never scrape the vat with anything sharp — it's the fastest way to write off a film
- The lead screw nut is held by four 3 mm hex screws, though some batches shipped with only two
- Parts that have wiki replacement guides but no retail listing: the UV LED board, mainboard, power supply, touchscreen, cooling fan, limit switch and lead screw motor. Elegoo issues them through support tickets, and the catalogue carries third-party equivalents at $55.76, $113.48 and $32.14
Difficulty: easy. Cost: about $5 for a tube of grease. Replacing the UV board is a proper teardown: four screws on the bottom cover, eleven on the middle panel (one hidden behind the Z axis), four on the lens shutter, four on the lens and four on the board itself, plus fresh thermal paste on the heatsink. 28. PCB photoresist exposure: the printer as a lithography rig
A non-obvious use an owner documented on a Russian-language forum, and one that translates anywhere. His words: owners of this printer get a cheat code for making PCBs at home, because the printer's UV exposure is ideal for photoresist. You convert the trace layout into a solid model, extrude it slightly, set a total exposure of 40 seconds in the slicer, remove the vat and lay the board photoresist-down directly on the screen.
- Resolution no home-printed transparency can match: 405 nm and a 19×24 µm pixel
- UVtools ships a dedicated PCBExposure tool for exactly this, so you can skip the slicer gymnastics
- No extra hardware: photoresist and the board are all you need
- Be careful: the vat comes off and the screen is exposed, so one scratch from a board edge costs $86.65 for a new panel
Difficulty: high — not because the steps are hard, but because of what a slip costs. Cost: $0. The tool ships inside UVtools, and the printer-side technique comes from an owner writing up his results on a Russian-language forum.
Where to start: the sensible order
Nobody does all twenty-eight at once. A sane order goes like this: first what protects your money, then what improves results, and only then what improves comfort.
- Pull the rubber plugs out of the plate screws — zero cost, one minute, one film saved
- Print a drip mount and a vat lid — the two things that stop resin work being messy
- Buy spare film and a second vat, $50.76 and $34.65. Without spare film a single scratch stops you for a week
- Vent outside through the stock port — the only mod on this list that affects your health rather than your comfort
- Calibrate exposure with the cones or AmeraLabs Town — free, and it pays back on every print
- Deal with cold: a belt and thermostat, or the stock heater if your room sits below 20 °C
- Stick a $7.32 protector film on the screen, and keep a spare panel on the shelf if you print heavily
- Only then go for networking, UVtools, the flex plate and modded firmware — everything where a mistake costs more than the mod
If you run a plain Saturn 3 or the next generation, the mod lists differ noticeably: the Saturn 3 has no Wi-Fi and only one purifier port, while on the Saturn 4 Ultra the tilting vat mechanism changes half the logic. What not to do
- Don't buy the branded PFA pack "for the Saturn series" to save money: a 273×176 mm sheet does not fit a Saturn 3 Ultra frame, which needs 290×195 mm
- Don't buy Saturn 2 plate holders — the Saturn 3 Ultra plate can't stand upright on the vat lip. Saturn 2 vat lids and storage, on the other hand, do fit
- Don't fit a flex plate and skip the re-level: the kit raises the print surface by 2.6–3.8 mm. Wham Bam lists the Saturn 3 Ultra as re-level-only, but if your adjustment range won't absorb it and you fit a Z-stop extension, a sloppy mount costs you a screen
- Don't treat the carbon filter as protection from fumes: it reduces odour, it does not remove the air from your room
- Don't wait for Elegoo to add SDCP 3.0, a camera or notifications — this model is no longer being developed
- Don't flash modded firmware if you need a current version: no builds exist for 1.5.4 or newer
- Don't rely on abandoned .goo tooling: connorslade/goo and JackDesBwa/goo_hacks are archived by their authors, and SDCP 3.0 integrations target the Saturn 4 Ultra
