Washing and Curing Resin Prints: The Full Workflow
A complete look at resin post-processing: what to wash with and for how long, when to clip supports, how long to run the UV cure and why extra minutes hurt. With timing tables, a breakdown of wash and cure stations, and disposal rules.
Washing and post-curing are the two mandatory steps after resin printing: you rinse the part in 95%+ isopropyl alcohol for 3-10 minutes (or in water for 10-12 minutes if the resin is water-washable), dry it, then hit it with 405nm UV for another 1-10 minutes. Skip them and the part stays tacky, unsafe to handle, and sits at 50-85% polymerization instead of the 95%+ its rated properties assume.
Why washing and curing actually matter
When the printer finishes, the part isn't done. Resin maker Liqcreate puts it plainly in their measured tests: printing gets the material to 50-85% polymerization — just enough to hold shape and survive peel forces. Rated strength and stiffness show up above 95%. Post-curing is what closes that gap.
Washing solves a different problem. A film of liquid resin clings to every surface, and if you cure it straight away that film hardens into a shell: fine detail blurs, dimensions drift, and the surface stays sticky anyway. There's a health angle too — per resin manufacturer AmeraLabs, repeated skin contact with uncured resin builds up sensitization until it fires as a full allergic reaction. Washing isn't cosmetic.

What you'll need
- Isopropyl alcohol, 95% or higher. Anycubic states it flat out: weaker alcohol leaves a white haze on your models. Buying it by the 5-liter jug is far cheaper per wash than small bottles.
- Two containers with lids. The first is your dirty bath for the heavy lifting, the second is clean for the final rinse. Lids keep the alcohol from evaporating.
- Nitrile gloves. Latex won't cut it — resin permeates it far faster. Nitrile isn't permanent either, monomers push through in minutes, so swap gloves instead of wearing one pair all evening.
- A soft brush or old toothbrush for crevices and fine detail the flow can't reach.
- Paper towels and, optionally, a bulb blower or compressor to clear alcohol out of blind cavities.
- A 405nm UV source. A cure station, a nail lamp, or as a last resort the sun — with caveats covered below.
- Flush cutters with a flat jaw for supports.
- Ventilation. Alcohol vapor is heavier than air and pools low, and resin emits volatiles you can't always smell.
Step 1. Pull the plate and let it drip
Don't yank the plate off immediately. Loosen it, tilt it over the vat, and give it a couple of minutes: a fair amount of resin drains back, which means less washing and longer-lived alcohol. Then don't dawdle. The rule of thumb printers converge on is no more than 3-4 hours from print end to post-cure. Left hanging on the plate inside a closed printer you can stretch that to twelve, but that's slack, not a target.
The reasoning is simple: while liquid resin sits on the surface it keeps migrating in and out of the part, and thin features sag under their own weight. A print left overnight picks up warping and cloudy surfaces far more often.
Step 2. Washing: alcohol or water
The default fluid is isopropyl alcohol at 95% or above. That's not nitpicking: in the troubleshooting section of the official Anycubic wiki, "parts turned white after washing" has exactly two causes — weak alcohol and curing without drying. The water in diluted IPA doesn't dissolve resin, but it happily leaves cloudy streaks behind.
Timing has a ceiling. Prusa's CW1 documentation defaults to 3 minutes and hard-caps total washing at ten: prolonged alcohol contact raises tiny surface cracks, and they sometimes only appear a full day later. IPA is a solvent, and it doesn't stop at the liquid layer.

The two-bath method
The approach Anycubic and most experienced printers push: two containers. The first holds already-used alcohol and takes off the bulk of the resin — 3-5 minutes of agitation plus a brush in the crevices. The second holds clean alcohol for a 20-30 second rinse. That keeps the clean bath clean for far longer, and it stops dissolved resin from drying on the surface as that classic white haze.
One extra trick from Prusa: after the alcohol, give the part a quick rinse under running water and pat it dry with a paper towel. That carries off leftover solvent along with the resin dissolved in it, and the surface comes out noticeably cleaner.
Water-washable resin: when water makes sense
Water-washable formulations get liters of alcohol out of your apartment, and that's their real selling point. But there's a cost, and users describe it honestly. In an r/resinprinting thread the top complaint is blunt: water stops cleaning after a handful of uses, while IPA lasts much longer. Second, contaminated water is harder to get rid of — it doesn't evaporate the way alcohol does, and people end up hoarding bottles of cloudy sludge waiting on disposal.
Third is brittleness. It's real but no longer universal: owners report that specific formulas — Anycubic Water Washable V2 among them — are noticeably less brittle than the competitors they tried, though large flat parts like bases still warp on them. The sensible middle ground is a water-washable ABS-like resin — washes in water, survives a drop.

Step 3. Clip supports before the full cure
The step beginners skip: supports come off between washing and curing. A washed but uncured part is still in its green state — soft and rubbery, so contact tips break away cleanly, sometimes with just your fingers. After a full cure that same part is rigid and brittle: cutters stop slicing and start gouging craters, and delicate features snap off with the support.
If marks remain, leave them for now — sanding works better after the final cure, when the surface is hard and won't gum up the paper. Where to go from there — priming, sanding, painting — is covered in our general 3D print post-processing guide.
Step 4. Dry it properly
The most underrated step. Anycubic lists it as the second cause of white-looking models: "the printed objects are cured immediately after washing — please air dry them before curing." Droplets of alcohol dry unevenly under UV and leave matte streaks; water leaves tackiness and patchy gloss. The surface has to be dry everywhere, blind cavities included.
In practice a quarter of an hour of air drying does it, or a couple of minutes with a blower or compressor. Stand hollow models drain-hole down — alcohol keeps seeping out of them for a while. Stations like the Prusa CW1 break drying out as its own stage, at the same 3 minutes as the wash.
Step 5. Post-curing
The working wavelength is 405nm — the same band the printer itself cures with. Resins technically cure anywhere from 365 to 405nm, but those aren't equivalent. At matched time and temperature, Formlabs measured a 365nm sample reaching only 67% of the modulus achieved at 405nm. Liqcreate explains why: 365nm cures surfaces well, while wavelengths closer to 400nm drive deeper through the material. So a 405nm source is the safer choice: 365nm sets the surface well but drives less energy into the bulk.

How to tell it's done: the surface goes smooth and matte, and the part gives a sharp ring instead of a dull thud when tapped. An undercured print stays damp and tacky to the touch.
The water trick: why tackiness disappears
If a part is still tacky after curing, the culprit is usually oxygen, not a sloppy wash. Oxygen scavenges free radicals and terminates polymer chains — the reaction stalls right at the air boundary. Air is about 21% oxygen; water is under 1%. Hence the community classic: drop the part into a clear jar of clean water and cure straight through it. Water passes 405nm fine and refracts it evenly, reaching into recesses.
In practice roughly half the usual time is enough underwater. This isn't folklore either — Liqcreate specifies "30 minutes, the first 5 minutes in water" for its flexible resins. Two caveats: use clean water (cloudy tap water leaves bubbles on the surface), and you'll be drying the part all over again.
Over-curing: when extra minutes backfire
"I'll leave it longer, it'll be stronger" doesn't hold. Formlabs has the numbers: Rigid 4000 at 80°C gains 116% modulus in the first 15 minutes, then stops improving — all you add after that is yellowing. Rising stiffness always trades against elongation at break: the part gets harder and more brittle at once. Over-cured prints crack under a fingernail flick, and clear resins yellow permanently.
Wash and cure stations worth knowing
A station rolls both steps into one enclosed box: alcohol doesn't evaporate into the room and UV doesn't hit your eyes. A full cycle runs 10-15 minutes. Here are the confirmed specs on the popular models.

Big stations save solvent as much as time: by Anycubic's own testing, the Wash & Cure Max cleans models over 25.5cm on four liters of IPA where a conventional machine needs upwards of 8.5 liters — half the consumption.
An honest note on where consumer stations stop. Liqcreate measured mechanical properties after curing in several units, and the verdict is clear: standard resins reach full properties in an Anycubic Wash & Cure 2.0 in 30 minutes, clear resins in 60. Neither it nor the Elegoo Mercury X can finish engineering grades — Composite-X in the Mercury X stalls around 100 MPa even at 120 minutes, against the 145-165 MPa Liqcreate reaches in a heated unit. The missing ingredient is heat: warmth raises mobility in the polymer network, and without it some bonds simply never form. The workaround for those materials is 60 minutes of UV followed by an hour in an 80°C oven while the part is still warm. It closes part of the gap, but never reaches the rated numbers.
Disposing of alcohol and water
Alcohol doesn't get consumed, it gets saturated. Anycubic gives a benchmark: roughly 30 washed models before the solution clouds over and stops working. But don't dump it yet, because the dissolved resin can be settled out.
- Let the used alcohol stand in a sealed container for at least 10 hours so the suspension settles.
- Carefully decant or filter the clear top layer into a clean container and seal it — that's working solvent, good to reuse.
- Set the sludge out in sunlight or under a UV lamp until it fully hardens.
- Bin the hardened mass as ordinary solid waste — at that point it's inert.
- Water from water-washable resin follows the same routine, but it evaporates far more reluctantly — plan storage space for it up front.
Common mistakes
- White haze on the model. Alcohol below 95%, or curing a wet surface. Both are listed in Anycubic's official wiki — fixed with stronger alcohol and proper drying.
- Tacky surface after curing. Either an incomplete wash or oxygen inhibition. Easy test: cure it underwater — if the tack disappears, oxygen was the cause.
- Tiny cracks a day later. Too long in alcohol. Keep total wash time under 10 minutes.
- Part crumbles and yellows. Over-cured. Cut the time and go by the matte finish and the ring test.
- Supports gouging craters. They were clipped after a full cure. Do it between washing and UV.
- Alcohol stopped cleaning. It's saturated, around the 30-model mark. Settle it 10 hours and decant the clear layer.
- Basket won't spin in the station. Something's jammed in there, or sludge has built up on the bottom — drain and clean it.
- IPA in an ultrasonic cleaner. Don't: alcohol vapor plus a spark writes its own ending. Mechanical agitation is plenty for resin.
Hard-won tips
- Wash small loose parts in a mesh basket or a closed jar — otherwise half of them settle to the bottom of the tank and turn up much later.
- Rotate hollow models mid-wash: skip it and resin stays trapped inside, then slowly weeps out through the drain holes and ruins your paint job.
- Cure clear resins longer than the rest, but watch the tint — they're the first to go yellow.
- Don't run a cure station in a living room without ventilation: a warm part keeps off-gassing for a while. More on that in our breakdown of fumes and ventilation.
- Keep separate gloves for washing and for painting: resin traces on your fingertips transfer to everything you touch.
- Don't lean on sunlight as your main method: UV intensity swings with the hour and the weather, so you'll never get repeatable results. Fine as a fallback, not as a process.
- Log the cure time per resin. Ninety seconds for miniatures and five minutes for a big part are different numbers, and you won't eyeball them.
- Resin prints are never food safe, fully cured or not: microchannels between layers harbor bacteria.
