The Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra is a 2024 resin printer with a 218.88 × 122.88 × 220 mm build volume, a 10-inch 12K mono LCD (11520 × 5120, 19 × 24 μm pixels) and a tilting vat that peels a layer in about two seconds instead of seven, which is where the claimed 150 mm/h comes from. It prints well out of the box, but there's no resin heating, no lid handle, the flat top of the build plate collects resin, and the single 75 mm rear port has to be shared between an exhaust duct and a heater. Below are 29 mods owners actually run on the 12K version, from a printed bracket that costs an hour of filament to running the machine from Home Assistant over SDCP. Don't mix up the three machines. The Saturn 4 is the base model with no tilt, no Wi-Fi and no camera, and it has its own mod list. The Saturn 4 Ultra is 12K, tilt release, camera and Wi-Fi, but no vat heater. The Saturn 4 Ultra 16K is effectively a different printer: different screen, build plate with side ears, vat heating to 30 °C and a light next to the camera. This article is about the 12K, and half the mods here exist precisely because the 12K doesn't have those conveniences.

1. Build plate drip bracket

The most downloaded mod for this printer and the first thing worth printing: a bracket that hangs the removed build plate at an angle right over the vat, so resin drips back where it came from instead of onto your desk, gloves and floor. NotMyButter's original sits at 382 likes and 7,788 downloads; SonnyD1's version adds a steeper angle plus a 5-degree cant to the rear so the excess pools in one corner. Both lock into the printer's factory build plate lever, so there's nothing to drill.

Difficulty: easy. Cost: filament only. Compatibility: 16K plates have side ears, so you'll want Sluggles' slotted version — or remove the ears. Print it with extra walls and infill: it's holding a heavy aluminum plate over a film you don't want to replace.

2. Handle for the flip-up lid

There's no handle on the cover, so you open it by grabbing the plastic itself — usually with gloves that already have resin on them. In the community thread about what Elegoo should fix in the Saturn 5, a handle is the second most requested change after a sloped build plate. GeekDetour's model comes in two flavors: M3 10 mm screws with brass heat-set inserts (a printed drilling guide is included) and a heavy-duty double-sided tape version with no holes at all.

3. Scraper and fence for the top of the build plate

The top of the Saturn 4 Ultra plate is flat, there's a gap between the aluminum slab and the mount, and resin works its way in there on every lift. It's complaint number one in the owner survey. Two ways to fix it: a narrow scraper sized for the gap, or linycv's remix with a scoop on the tip so it collects resin on the way in as well. The heavy-handed option is Brian.S's resin fence: two halves glued to the top of the plate with silicone so resin never reaches the awkward spots.

4. Handles on the build plate

The Saturn 4 Ultra plate is heavy, releases through a quick-lock lever, and at that exact moment it's covered in resin. There's nothing to hold onto: early 12K units don't even have the side ears that showed up on the 16K (Elegoo has been shipping the newer plate for the Saturn 4 Ultra since spring 2026). Project34's handles mount on M3 countersunk bolts and ship with a drilling jig.

5. Vat bib — protecting the tilt assembly groove

This is the most underrated mod that's specific to the Ultra. On a normal resin printer a drip lands on the case and you wipe it. Here there's a moving tilt assembly under the vat, and resin that gets into its groove has to be cleaned out following Elegoo's dedicated procedure — or, worst case, it finds the Fresnel lens. Telekineticyeti's bib clips onto the stock vat screws with no tools or hardware and covers the front and sides; the rear edge is left open, and it's lower risk anyway. The budget version of the same trick: run painter's tape around the vat seat and replace it weekly.

Difficulty: easy. Cost: filament. There's a single-piece version at 337 mm wide and a two-part split for smaller beds — glue the halves with standard CA against a straight edge. The author has been running it as a daily driver for several months.

6. Vat cover

Saturn 4 Ultra owners routinely leave resin in the vat for weeks or months, and that's fine — it doesn't evaporate and it won't cure without UV. The real issues are smell and stray light: the gray hood passes more of it than the classic red or green. Yezariael's cover closes the vat top and bottom, with the top half held by the stock vat screws through a printed spacer and the bottom assembled on M4 inserts. MakerWorld has a version with a TPU seal that cuts the smell noticeably.

7. Vat drain stand and a filtered funnel

The Saturn 4 Ultra vat needs the best part of a liter of resin to reach the minimum line, and holding it over a funnel for ten minutes gets old fast. agenti's holder parks the vat at an angle over a funnel and lets it drain itself; Vincent's stand does the same on a 400 mm 2020 extrusion. A filter is non-negotiable: cured crumbs off the bottom are a straight path to your next self-check error.

8. Vat storage protector and a level gauge

There's nowhere safe to put a removed vat: the bottom is a PFA sheet, and any grit on the bench will puncture it. Project34's protector caps the vat top and bottom so you can set it down or carry it without thinking. Same category, different problem: a printed level gauge. The author says the markings are approximate, and that's fine — it answers "is there enough for an overnight print" in one glance.

Difficulty: easy. Cost: filament and four M4 nuts for the bottom half. Overfilling past the MAX line matters literally on this machine: the excess goes into the tilt assembly groove and from there into the case.

9. A stock of PFA film — and the tank clean cycle instead of a scraper

The Saturn 4 Ultra box contains exactly zero spare release film, and tearing down the stock vat is unpleasant enough that some owners jump to a third-party tank after doing it once. Keep spares: a ten-sheet PFA pack runs $13.98 in our catalog. The single biggest factor in film life is never touching it with a metal scraper. Instead, run the printer's tank clean cycle after pressing a leftover support fragment into the lower corner of the screen — that gives you a tab to pull, and the cured skin lifts off in one piece. It's a tip straight from the owner thread, and it saves film better than being careful ever will.

10. A second metal vat

The most boring and most effective mod for anyone printing regularly. A second vat turns a film change from an emergency into a scheduled job: pull one, drop in the other, keep printing, rebuild the first one in the evening. The other use case is two resins at once — gray for models in one tank, clear or engineering resin in the other, with no flush in between. Do water-test any new vat: one owner had three of four stock tanks leaking at the corners straight from the factory and now sets every new one on a paper towel and fills it with water first.

11. Vat handles and clamp plates

The vat clamps down with two thumb screws, and the threaded inserts behind them are a known weak point — owners report them stripping in under a year. The knob itself likes to either spin free or seize solid on dried resin. Elegoo's handle and clamp plate set replaces the whole assembly for about a third of the price of a new tank.

12. LCD screen protector: do you actually need one?

There's a lot of confusion here, so in order. The Saturn 4 Ultra ships with tempered glass over the masking LCD — Elegoo confirms this in the Q&A on its own product page. A thin stick-on protector on top of that is a separate thing and a separate argument: it keeps resin leaks off the glass, but it adds another layer between screen and film and traps bubbles if you rush the install. Reasonable middle ground: fit one if you've already had a leak or you print heavily with several resins; if the machine lives in a clean space and you're careful, the glass is enough.

13. Chitu Systems Hoopat X4 quick-release vat

The third-party Chitu Systems Hoopat solves exactly one problem: changing film without dozens of screws. The manufacturer claims a 30-second swap, and the updated version added a seal ring against leaks. X4 fits the Saturn 4 and 4 Ultra; X4H is the 16K version. It's $99.99 direct with free worldwide shipping, with five-sheet film packs at $37.99–39.99.

  • Film changes without tearing down the frame — the only real reason to buy it

Difficulty: moderate. Cost: $99.99 — nearly two stock metal vats. Honestly: owner threads do carry Hoopat complaints, and film tension is set by the design rather than by your hands, so some people go back to stock. Buy it if you change film more than once a month; for occasional printing, a second stock vat from the previous mod is the better spend.

14. The Elegoo Mini Heater and its 25 °C ceiling

The 12K has no resin heating, and that's its biggest weakness: in a cold room prints fail, parts pull off the plate, and the failure rate climbs. The factory answer is the 120 W PTC Mini Heater, which bolts to an adapter plate in place of the exhaust port cover (2.5 mm and 2.0 mm hex keys, display facing inward — official guide here). The number that matters is printed right on the product page: it kicks in below 25 °C and shuts off above 25 °C. In other words it holds 25 °C, while the comfortable window for most resins is 25–30 °C.

  • Includes a 40.5 × 40.5 × 23 mm carbon filter, two in the box, which takes a bite out of the smell

Difficulty: easy. Cost: $46 on sale versus $84 list. Two gotchas. First, there's only one rear port, and the heater, the purifier and the exhaust all want it — something has to come off. Second, heating and extracting at once is pointless anyway, the fan drags the heat outside. If you need both, preheat with the heater in the port and swap it for the exhaust fitting before starting the print — or leave the port free entirely and heat the whole volume in a tent, as in the next mod. One reviewer's external heater damaged the Wi-Fi antenna, so keep the hot stream away from that connector.

15. Roll your own heat: PTC heater plus a thermostat

If 25 °C isn't enough or the printer lives in a garage, you take heating into your own hands. The setup that keeps coming up in owner threads: a 100 W ceramic PTC heater plus an Inkbird controller, both inside a grow tent — the whole volume heats, the temperature holds itself, and nothing needs switching on before each print. The next level is heating the vat directly: isaac879's open project publishes the files for a heating PCB you can order from any board house and stick to the vat wall. Power goes in through a printed port pass-through rather than a hole in the shell.

  • You pick the temperature instead of accepting a fixed 25 °C
  • The controller holds it, so preheating stops being something you remember
  • A smart plug lets you start warming up half an hour before the print from your phone
  • A temperature sensor inside the case (an Aqara, say) tells you when the chamber is actually there

Difficulty: hard, occasionally expert. Cost: roughly $32–64 for heater, controller and smart plug. Two reality checks. One: the fermentation belt that worked beautifully on a Saturn 2 is a problem on the Ultra — it's thick enough to interfere with the tilt mechanism, though some owners still clamp it on with binder clips at their own risk. Two: ThermalVatBand is not a thing you can buy — the site has been down since early 2026 and the community reports unshipped orders and refused refunds. And isaac879's project is alive but hasn't been touched since April 2025, so don't expect new revisions.

16. Ducting the fumes outside through the 75 mm port

The only way to genuinely get fumes out of the room is to send them outside. Elegoo left a blanking plate at the back for exactly this: the hole is 75 mm, and the company doesn't sell a fan for it. Two routes from there. Marcel_Be's adapter takes 80 mm hose and has a seat for a fan powered off the printer's USB port. More convenient day to day is Rezin Creative's magnetic system: one half lives on the printer, one on the window, and a third piece plugs the hole when nothing is running. And remember that an exhaust cools the resin — noticeable on an unheated 12K — so run the fan slow, or only after the chamber is up to temperature.

17. The Mars Mate air purifier: the honest math

The purifier hooks onto the same expansion port with the hose it ships with. Manufacturer numbers: model AP01, 6 W, 35 dB, up to 95% of VOCs removed, a sensor that turns the indicator red past 1,440 filter hours or 1.4 ppm, and automatic cycling — 50 minutes on low, 10 on high. Now the arithmetic: the unit is $139 on sale against $175 list, and a replacement carbon filter is $89.99 with a service life of about two months. That's six filters a year of continuous running.

  • It genuinely kills the smell in the room — that's its honest job
  • Quiet and cheap to run: 6 W and 35 dB
  • No window or duct across the house required
  • But it doesn't remove VOCs from the room, it just pushes them through carbon

Difficulty: easy. Cost: $139 plus $89.99 per filter. The community verdict is blunt and near-unanimous: a purifier is not a substitute for an exhaust. It makes sense where ducting to a window is impossible, and as a supplement to ducting — not instead of it. The cheap alternative for the same scenario is a USB carbon purifier dropped straight into the chamber.

18. A tent or cabinet for the whole workflow, not just the printer

The point everybody arrives at independently: washing in IPA releases roughly as many fumes as printing does. Ducting only the printer covers half the job. So owners move into a grow tent or a home-built cabinet big enough for the Saturn 4 Ultra, the wash station and the post-processing bench. The typical combination is a tent around 90 × 60 cm, an inline fan with a carbon filter, vented out a window. Purpose-built resin cabinets basically aren't sold — people build them from steel shelving and polycarbonate.

19. Getting a cable inside without drilling

A small part that unlocks half the other mods. Anything electronic inside the case — lighting, a heater, a temperature sensor — needs power, and nobody wants to drill the shell for a cable. Julien Mairy's adapter replaces the stock 75 mm port cover, passes a 5 mm cable and still leaves room to fit an exhaust or a purifier later. You'll need M3×18 screws at minimum. One owner deepened the model to 10 mm and opened the hole to 8 mm to feed his custom PTC heater.

Difficulty: moderate. Cost: filament and four M3×18 screws. For small loads like an LED strip, take power straight from the printer's USB port — 5 V is there, and a couple of watts won't bother the machine.

20. Chamber lighting for the camera — and why it must not be RGB

The Saturn 4 Ultra has a camera but no light — Elegoo only added illumination next to it on the 16K. In the dark your timelapse is a black rectangle and failure detection is decorative. A 5 V LED strip off the printer's USB port fixes it. There's a ready-made printed housing too: T Lab Custom's two-part light bar with a snap-on diffuser so the camera isn't blinded; it sticks to the side wall next to the camera and accepts any strip 3–10 mm wide.

  • The diffuser kills the film glare the camera chokes on

Difficulty: moderate. Cost: from about $5 for strip and wire. Route the cable through the pass-through from the previous mod. And on the popular idea of dropping an RGB PC fan into the exhaust port: it stacks two problems, colored LEDs plus constant airflow that chills the resin on a machine with no heater.

21. Fine plate leveling with paper — and Elegoo's patch firmware

Saturn 4 Ultra auto-leveling finds Z zero with a strain gauge; it does not level the plate plane against the screen. If one corner presses lighter, that's where adhesion fails while the opposite corner grows an elephant's foot. Elegoo has an official fine-tuning procedure hardly anyone knows about: slice a model with 60 or 90 second bottom exposure, pull the vat, put four torn pieces of A4 on the corners of the LCD and print without the tank. If a "Print Abnormal" dialog appears, hit "Mandatory Printing". While the first layer exposes, tug the paper: correct pressure means it pulls out but won't push back in. Back off the screw at a loose corner slightly with a 2.5 mm hex key.

  • Lets you drop bottom exposure, because the pressure is even everywhere

Difficulty: hard. Cost: free — 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm hex keys, a hair dryer and a sheet of A4. One more thing owners keep repeating: put a spirit level on the printer itself. A tilting vat doesn't forgive a sloped bench, and one owner's failure rate dropped sharply the moment he levelled the machine.

22. Flex plates: why Elegoo says no, and what happens in practice

The most contentious mod for this machine, and it deserves straight talk. Elegoo states on the product page that the Saturn 4 Ultra is not compatible with flexible build plates, that installing one leads to auto-leveling problems and inaccurate resin level detection, and that it may damage the LCD. Owner experience splits down the middle. Some run a Wham Bam XTR successfully after flashing Saturn4UltraModifiedXTR0403_2025.gcode from a USB stick, which rewrites the Z-limit machine parameters for the added thickness. Others report nothing but failures. One owner found the tilting vat pushing the flex plate forward and had to glue a hard rubber stop on, losing 3 mm of build area at the front.

  • One big upside: prints pop off by flexing the sheet, no hammer, no chisel
  • Downside: the manufacturer is formally against it, which makes an LCD warranty claim awkward
  • Downside: the magnetic base adds about 4 mm, so you end up shimming the plate screws with washers
  • Downside: the correction file has to be re-run after every Elegoo firmware update

Difficulty: hard, with real risk. Cost: $60–90 for a plate. The alternative owners themselves suggest: a second stock plate at $38.11, which needs no firmware edits at all. Welded-on prints let go after ten minutes in the freezer — put the whole plate on a baking tray. Simpler still: warm the plate to about 50 °C with a hair dryer, the base softens and the part lifts, and heated supports go elastic and snap off without chipping the surface.

23. Dialling in exposure with Cones of Calibration v3

Software mods pay off more than half the hardware on this printer, and this is where to start. The Saturn 4 Ultra's light engine is noticeably overpowered: owners who begin at the factory 1.8 seconds per layer end up around 0.8–1.0 seconds on ordinary gray resin. Overexposure isn't "slightly chunkier" — it's filled-in fine detail, parts that won't mate, and higher release force. The right tool is the Cones of Calibration v3 test: features on one side must print, features on the other must fail. Split the plate into 4, 6 or 8 zones, put a cone in each and run the printer's built-in multi-exposure mode in 0.1 second steps.

  • One run instead of a dozen trial prints
  • Reads unambiguously: the feature printed or it didn't, no "looks a bit better"
  • Flat validation-matrix style tests are much harder to read on this machine
  • On thin resins, turning the light power down helps as well

Difficulty: moderate. Cost: free, plus a little resin. Recalibrate for every new bottle and every color — black and clear want wildly different exposure. The factory ChituBox profile for the 16K sibling looks like this: 0.05 mm layers, 5 bottom layers, 2.3 s exposure, 32 s bottom exposure, 1.2 s rest after retract. 24. Rest times before exposure and after retract

The second-strongest software lever and the best cure for horizontal banding that appears out of nowhere after months of clean prints. The logic is simple: the tilting vat is large, resin is still sloshing after the peel, and exposing at that moment prints a boundary into moving liquid. One owner who has no banding runs a 4 second rest before exposure. The reverse trick: bottom exposure can come down substantially if you add rest after retract — that's Rest After Retract in ChiTuBox and Wait time before cure in UVtools. The other rest values barely matter.

  • A 3–4 second rest before exposure clears repeating horizontal bands
  • Rest after retract buys back several seconds of bottom exposure
  • Thin resins want 10–20 seconds of rest on the first 10–20 layers; thick ones closer to 40
  • Excess exposure raises release force, and thin supports pay for it

Difficulty: moderate. Cost: free, just print time. A separate warning about lift itself: on a tilting vat the lift height and speed values inside a .goo file are ignored, and Fast/Normal modes are touchscreen-only. 25. Rotating flat surfaces against the pixel grid

A subtle technique that separates experienced printers from beginners. The Saturn 4 Ultra pixel isn't square: 19 μm on X, 24 μm on Y. Lay a flat surface at a "nice round" angle like 30 or 45 degrees and the stepping aligns with the grid and produces visible banding. The correct angle follows from pixel size, and there's a calculator on rc87.blog for it. The simpler companion rule: never lay large flat surfaces flat, and print several models at once so the peel area per layer stays small.

  • Smooth surfaces stop banding without touching exposure at all
  • Tilting cuts peel area, easing load on both film and supports
  • Batching models saves time and film life
  • Works alongside rest before exposure, not instead of it

26. UVtools — editing the sliced file before it prints

UVtools is an open-source MSLA file editor: analysis, calibration, repair, conversion. It shows you the layers where geometry floats unsupported, finds islands and suction cups, repairs empty layers and lets you insert rests the slicer won't. Reality check passed: 1,609 stars, AGPL-3.0, last commit 20 August 2026, release v6.2.0 dated 6 August 2026 — the project is alive and actively maintained, and that release specifically reworked island and suction-cup detection and layer-range handling.

  • Finds islands — the layers where a print "suddenly" drops off
  • Flags suction cups and tells you where a drain hole belongs
  • Estimates resin use more accurately than the slicer
  • Repairs the file without a round trip back to the slicer

Difficulty: hard. Cost: free. One caveat: don't touch lift parameters through UVtools. They don't do anything on a tilting vat anyway, and a mangled file header is something the printer may simply refuse. Use it for analysis, repair and rest times, and leave the rest to the slicer.

27. Remote printing and the camera: ChituManager and the stream limit

The Saturn 4 Ultra has Wi-Fi, but you need to know two things about it or it looks broken. The most stable client is ChituManager: file transfer without a USB stick, live camera, timelapse, firmware updates over the network. The detail behind the vanishing camera: the RTSP stream accepts a maximum of two concurrent clients, and a client that disconnects uncleanly leaves an entry in the connection table. The counter climbs, and at some point the camera stops opening anywhere. Only a power cycle clears it — which is why the folk advice to "reboot the printer" actually works.

  • Timelapse must be enabled BEFORE the print starts — it can't be backfilled
  • Don't open the camera before layer three: hitting it during early exposure can deadlock the stream
  • Upload runs at roughly 170 KB/s over Wi-Fi, so a big file takes minutes
  • Starting a print immediately after upload returns busy — give it about 15 seconds

28. Home Assistant over SDCP: the printer as a normal smart-home device

The deepest mod on the list, and entirely software. The Saturn 4 Ultra speaks the open SDCP protocol: UDP discovery on port 3000, WebSocket control on port 3030, HTTP file upload. There's a ready Home Assistant integration — 176 stars, last commit 30 July 2026, installed through HACS by searching for "Elegoo Printers". It surfaces the camera feed, file thumbnails, stop/pause/resume buttons and sensors for progress, temperature, layer number and Z height. From there it's ordinary automation: cut the smart plug when the print ends, start the extractor when it begins, ping your phone if it stalls.

  • No cloud involved — everything runs on your LAN
  • Printer, heater and extractor tie into a single scene
  • There are detailed real-device SDCP notes for the Saturn 4 Ultra if you'd rather write your own client
  • Filament-feed and skip-preheat commands fail silently — they're FDM concepts

Difficulty: expert. Cost: free if you already run Home Assistant. Known limitation: firmware v1.1.29 blocks remote control of lights and temperature while a print is running, and that's on the firmware rather than the integration. Two projects that surface in search but shouldn't anchor your workflow: SdcpMonitor and ChitUI, both last committed in November 2024.

29. Wash and cure station — and why the plate doesn't go in it

You're not washing a 219 × 123 mm print in a kitchen sink, so a wash and cure station isn't a luxury, it's part of the bench. Elegoo's options are the Mercury Plus V3.0 with a 7.5 liter tank and 405 nm UV strips on a magnetic turntable, or the more compact Mercury XS bundle. Five minutes wash and five minutes cure handles most work. A standalone cure chamber makes sense when you already wash by hand and only need UV.

Difficulty: easy. Cost: $98.65–100.84 in our catalog. For those who insist on washing the plate whole, the community found a workaround: re-machine the plastic shield, taking about 6 mm off each side, and it drops into the Mercury XS tank. Where to start: the order that makes sense

Doing everything at once means never knowing which change helped. A sane sequence runs from what protects the machine and saves time toward what improves quality.

  1. Duct the fumes outside. This isn't about comfort, it's about health, and it happens on day one: pull the cover, fit the hose, the port is already there.
  2. Drip bracket, vat bib and scraper. Three printed parts that block this model's most expensive failure path — resin in the tilt assembly groove — and halve your cleanup.
  3. Exposure calibration with Cones of Calibration v3. Free, takes an evening, and pays off more than any purchase: the factory 1.8 seconds is almost always too much.
  4. PFA film stock and a second vat. Maintenance stops blocking print time, and never touching the film with metal multiplies its life.
  5. Heat. The Mini Heater if the room sits near 20 °C, a PTC heater with a thermostat in a tent if it's colder. On the 12K this addresses the single most common cause of failures.
  6. Paper leveling and rest before exposure. Two free steps that remove the dead adhesion zone and the horizontal banding.
  7. Lighting, ChituManager, Home Assistant. Everything that turns the printer from a box into a monitored device. Do this once the six steps above are working.

On maintenance: a resin printer needs less of it than an FDM machine, but skipping it still bites. Weekly, filter the resin and hold the film up to the light. Monthly, clean the tilt assembly groove and check the vat knobs. Quarterly, lubricate the MGN rails and inspect the protective glass. What not to do

  • Fit RGB lighting inside. The blue channel sits near 405 nm and cures resin on the plate and vat walls. Warm or neutral white only.
  • Go shopping for a ThermalVatBand. The site has been down since early 2026, with community reports of unshipped orders and refused refunds.
  • Tune lift height and speed in the slicer. A tilting vat ignores those values from the .goo file; Fast and Normal are touchscreen-only.
  • Buy ACF film for speed. There's no gain on the Saturn 4 Ultra, it adds vertical banding, and it punctures more easily than PFA despite being twice as thick.
  • Run the heater and the extractor together. The fan drags the heat straight outside, and on the 12K they also share the single port. Preheat first, extract during the print.
  • Submerge the build plate in the wash tank. It's hollow, alcohol gets in and weeps out for a week.
  • Attack the film with a metal scraper. The tank clean cycle lifts the cured skin in one piece and leaves no scratches.
  • Treat an air purifier as an exhaust. It removes smell, not VOCs, and its filter costs $89.99 every two months.
