Elegoo Centauri 2 — the open-frame member of the Centauri 2 Series platform

The Elegoo Centauri 2 is an open-frame CoreXY printer on a die-cast aluminium frame with a 256×256×256 mm build volume, a 350 °C nozzle, a 110 °C bed and a $279 starting price. It shipped on June 24, 2026 and rides on the same platform as the enclosed Centauri Carbon 2: same toolhead, same gearbox, same CANVAS unit, same wiki section, same spare-part numbers. What sets it apart is what it doesn't have — enclosure, camera, lighting, filter, exhaust. Every worthwhile mod on this machine fills one of those gaps, and unlike most printers, some of them are filled by an official Elegoo kit.

Below are 23 upgrades, ordered from pocket-change to teardown-level. Each one is checked against the official wiki, the Elegoo store, owner threads or model pages — the source sits at the end of every entry. There's also a section on what looks compatible but isn't, because it's built for the enclosed sibling. What the open machine ships without

Elegoo publishes its own model-comparison table, and it explains the whole mod logic better than any review. "Optional Add-on" doesn't mean "never" — it means there's a part and an instruction for it.

Here's what that means in practice: build volume, 500 mm/s top speed at a recommended 250, 10,000 mm/s² default acceleration and 20,000 at the limit, dual-gear direct drive, titanium alloy heat break and 121-point auto-leveling are identical to the enclosed model. The difference is climate. With no enclosure, Elegoo officially backs PLA, PETG, PLA-CF and TPU only — ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET and PETG-CF all sit in the "not recommended" column of the spec sheet.

1. CANVAS: four colors on the base machine

The single biggest upgrade for the base machine is the external four-spool feeder. It bolts to the side brackets, runs four PTFE tubes into a 4-in-1 hub and then a single line into the print head. Elegoo lists the compatible printers right on the product page — CC2, CC2C, C2 and C2C — so the plain Centauri 2 takes it stock, no adapters, no bodging. RFID tags on Elegoo spools set filament type and color by themselves, and when a spool runs out mid-print the unit switches to the next one instead of stopping.

Difficulty: moderate, about an hour with a hex key. Price: $120 in our catalog; $120 without cover and $150 with cover from Elegoo. What you pay for it: multi-color has to be sliced in ELEGOO Slicer — the channel change rides on the proprietary M6211 command that stock OrcaSlicer doesn't know. 2. The official kit: turn a Centauri 2 into a Carbon 2

This is the rare case where the manufacturer published the recipe for turning its cheap model into its expensive one. The Model Upgrade Program page in the Elegoo wiki runs to 152 photos and walks from pulling the back cover to the final self-check. You install the side enclosure panels, a glass door on damping hinges, a glass top, an LED strip, a chamber thermistor, a camera, a divider assembly with a composite filter and four servo-driven air dampers, a case fan and an auxiliary part cooling fan. The open machine ends up with exactly the hardware you'd pay extra for in a Carbon 2.

The sequence matters, so read it end to end first. The back cover is 14 screws, the bottom cover 10, the upper frame 13, all 2.0 mm hex. Connectors are labeled: ① goes to BOT-T, ② to LIGHT, while SERVOR, SERHAL and BOX-F route through the left cable slot and FAN1 through the right. The bottom panel screws wait: with the bed parked low the holes are blocked, so you run Control → Home first and only then drive those four screws.

  • A real chamber means ABS and ASA, which the open machine officially won't run
  • Camera and lighting: you watch the print instead of walking into the room
  • HEPA-plus-coconut-carbon composite filter and controlled dampers handle fumes properly
  • Panels and glass muffle the belts and motors owners complain about
  • The chamber thermistor starts reporting a real number instead of a guess

Difficulty: expert — the machine comes apart almost completely: back, bottom and top covers, divider, cable chain, PTFE tube and the CAN bus connector. The step you cannot skip: Settings → Upgrade (Model Upgrade Program), tick Overhead Light, Camera, Auxiliary Fan, Exhaust Vent and Case Fan, hit Upgrade → Confirm and let the printer register the hardware. Without it the firmware never sees the new parts. Then run Calibration → One-Click Self-Check → Select All → Start. If the enclosure is about ABS and ASA rather than about noise, read the warping guide and the fumes and ventilation guide alongside it: an enclosed machine in a living room without extraction is a bad trade.

3. A second build plate — and the right side of it

The stock plate is a dual-sided spring steel sheet: textured PEI on one face, a smooth PLA-specific surface on the other. The slicer asks which side you loaded, so mixing them up is hard. A second sheet kills the biggest source of downtime in home printing — waiting for the first one to cool before you can queue the next job. A third sheet is about separating materials so PETG doesn't chew up the surface you use for PLA.

  • Back-to-back printing: pop the sheet off, drop in the spare, start the next job
  • A dedicated PETG sheet makes the PLA PEI last noticeably longer
  • The carbon-texture version gives a matte bottom face with zero post-processing
  • A bent or dented sheet costs $9–13 to replace, not a whole bed assembly

Difficulty: none. Price: $9.28 for the PEI + PLA sheet in our catalog, $12.64 for the carbon-texture version, $28.80 for a three-pack (Elegoo lists the same sheets at $21.99–39.99). Watch out: don't run PETG on the smooth PLA side — it welds itself on and takes the coating with the part. PETG belongs on textured PEI with a thin layer of release glue. If first layers fail across the board, start with the first-layer guide, not with buying sheets.

4. Nozzles from 0.2 to 0.8 mm and quick-swap hotends

The factory nozzle is 0.4 mm with a brass body and a hardened steel tip — a sane compromise between heat transfer and wear. That's enough for PLA, PETG and even PLA-CF, the one reinforced filament on the supported list. A four-size kit changes what the machine is for: 0.2 mm for miniatures and small mechanisms, 0.6 and 0.8 mm for brackets and housings where hours matter more than detail. On 0.8 mm a chunky part finishes two to three times faster purely from extrusion width.

5. Silicone sock on the hotend

A three-dollar consumable that buys back hours. The sock wraps the heater block so nozzle temperature stops dipping under part-cooling airflow and so molten blobs don't bake onto the block, ready to drop into your model as a black speck later. Treat it as a consumable: once it tears, replace it immediately, because filament will find the hole, creep under the block and reach the thermistor.

6. Spool holders and adapters for third-party reels

The Combo holders are sized for Elegoo reels. A third-party plastic spool with a wider bore wobbles on them and eventually drops off from vibration — Elegoo admits this in the wiki and publishes elegoo_filament_roll_holder.stl sized for a 72 mm inner diameter. It prints on the machine itself and pushes into the reel with its collar standing proud of the spool face. The community adds versions for Sunlu reels and a bearing-based holder for stiff filament.

7. A dryer next to the machine and direct feed

An open frame means the spool hangs in room humidity all day. PLA copes; PETG and especially TPU don't. You get crackling in the nozzle, a pitted surface and walls that feel like foam. The fix is a dryer sitting next to the printer and feeding filament straight into it, so the plastic doesn't reabsorb moisture between drying and printing. The catch: the PTFE stubs on the CANVAS outlets are short, so pushing a coupler onto them for a dryer line bends the tubes sideways under the hose weight. A printed stabilizer braces them and still lets you pop the coupler off.

  • PETG and TPU stop crackling and pitting — the cheapest visible quality jump on this machine
  • Direct feed from the dryer: filament arrives dry, not "dried yesterday"
  • The stabilizer takes side load off the CANVAS tubes and fittings

Difficulty: moderate — the dryer itself takes a minute, the tubing and couplers are the fiddly part. Price: from $44.78 for a SUNLU FilaDryer S2, plus a printed stabilizer. 8. Purge ramp and waste bin

Multi-color printing pays in waste. In the 3DWithUs test a roughly 13 cm figure took 14 hours and produced almost as much purge by weight as the model itself. Without a ramp all of that lands behind the printer and lives under your desk. A printed ramp-and-bin combo fixes it in one evening of printing; there's also a pull-out side drawer where the handle is just a hole, so you can see how full it is without opening it.

  • Waste collects in one place instead of behind the desk
  • A magnet-mounted bin comes off one-handed and empties into the trash
  • PETG for the ramp isn't cosmetic: purge sticks to it far less than to PLA
  • Collected purge is easy to hoard for recycling or throwaway test prints

Difficulty: easy. Price: 200–400 g of filament. Compatibility: both designs target the Centauri Carbon 2 — a 40 mm wide ramp and an 85×252 mm bin. 9. TPU: native on the base machine, adapter on the Combo

Here the open machine actually beats the Combo. The footnote on the official spec sheet says it plainly: the base Centauri 2 prints TPU natively, while the CANVAS version needs a printed Flexible Filament Adapter and the CANVAS cable disconnected. The reason is simple — soft filament hates a long path through a hub and four channels. The adapter file ships on the bundled USB drive and lives in Elegoo's model hub, where it has 11.2k downloads; an April 29, 2026 update made it fit the CANVAS unit for the first Centauri Carbon too.

Assembly takes about twenty minutes. You need three collets with their clips and two lengths of 4 mm OD / 2 mm ID PTFE tubing — 48 mm and 25 mm. The adapter clips onto the side of CANVAS opposite channel 1: the upper groove lines up with the raised section, the lower slot with the channel inlet. The 48 mm piece goes into the center port, the stock long tube from the upper side of channel 1 into the top port and the 25 mm piece into the bottom; the clips slide between collets and body, and then you tug every tube to confirm it's locked. Feed TPU in from underneath until it stops; once it reaches the toolhead, the toolhead icon on the filament screen turns green. Finish with Filament → Edit → TPU → Confirm and Load TPU.

  • Going back to four colors takes five minutes: pull the adapter, restore the tubes, reconnect the cable

Difficulty: moderate. Price: a print plus pennies of tubing and collets. The trade: while the adapter is installed the CANVAS cable is off and multi-color is gone. Owners on Printables built their own version with an integrated spool holder, arguing the official file isn't optimized for printing and gives the tube no proper support. 10. Layer-based color changes without CANVAS

If you don't want the feeder but do want a two-tone nameplate, there's a free route: pause at a layer and swap the spool by hand. In practice owners hit a wall — the slicer's pause hangs with "pausing print" on the screen and the job has to be killed with the power switch. The fix is replacing the Change Filament G-code block in OrcaSlicer with a version built around the proprietary M6211 command, the same one Elegoo uses to switch channels and set purge volume.

11. Clean support surfaces through the second channel

This one is a settings mod, and it's free if you already own CANVAS. PLA and PETG barely bond to each other, which is what Elegoo's official trick exploits: PLA in one channel, PETG in another, support type Normal, interface material PETG, Top Z Distance set to 0, interface pattern Lines. The support prints flush against the model and peels off by hand, leaving a smooth face instead of the usual comb marks.

  • The underside comes out smooth with no filler and no sanding
  • No need for dissolvable PVA, which is expensive and hates humidity
  • Supports peel by hand instead of being carved off with a blade
  • Runs on stock profiles — no exotic settings involved

Difficulty: moderate — you need CANVAS and to know where the support interface lives in the slicer. Price: free plus the second material. 12. Lightweight toolhead cover

The most serious printable mod on this platform. The Proxima cover, version 4, is listed by its author for the Centauri Carbon, the first Centauri Carbon with CANVAS and the Carbon 2. The open Centauri 2 isn't named in that list, though it carries the same print head as the Carbon 2 — dry-fit before you commit. The designer counts grams: 38 g of printed parts plus roughly 25 g of fan and 2 g of screws gives 65 g against 95 g for the gamma cover, 99 g for SE3D and over 120 g stock. Shaving 55 g off a head that whips around at 500 mm/s is exactly what determines the ringing on your walls and the acceleration you can actually run.

  • 55 g off the moving mass means less ringing on sharp corners
  • Cooling runs on a common 5015 blower with a CFD-iterated duct
  • Access holes for extruder tension adjustment and the drive gear
  • Mounting provisions for Cartographer and Beacon probes
  • A diffuser slot means print-area lighting comes with the same part

Difficulty: high — you re-pin the fan connector, replace the stock cowling and print at 0.12 mm layers. Price: around 40 g of filament plus a 5015 fan and hardware. Two traps. First, the cover is meant to be printed in ASA or ABS, which the open Centauri 2 doesn't officially run — print the part on another machine. Second, it needs a magnet, or the printer decides the cover isn't installed and throws an error. 13. Noise: belts, rods, fans and what's under the feet

Noise is the most common complaint about this machine. The How-To Geek reviewer says belts, motors and especially the power supply are louder than on their other CoreXY printers, and that the Centauri 2 eventually moved off the desk. Elegoo has an official triage order for exactly this, and it saves time — you stop guessing and start ticking boxes.

  1. Placement. A rigid, flat surface — not glass, not a hollow desktop, both of which act as resonators. Press the four corners; if it rocks, shim it
  2. Fans. Toggle them one at a time from the screen and listen — the culprit shows up in a minute instead of an evening
  3. Belts. Loosen the four X/Y tensioner screws, reset tension, run the head back and forth by hand so tension evens out, then tighten
  4. Linear rods. Wipe with a lint-free cloth and alcohol, re-grease, and check for rust or coating flake while you're there
  5. Motors. Test one axis at a time, X separately from Y; never hot-plug a motor connector

Difficulty: moderate. Price: free — 2.0 and 2.5 mm hex keys, grease, alcohol and a lint-free cloth. What you can't fix: the power supply whine at idle. That's not mechanical, so either power the machine down between jobs or move it out of the bedroom. All axes use silent drivers, so everything you hear is mechanics and fans. 14. Manual bed leveling under the auto-leveling

121-point auto-leveling maps the bed and compensates for unevenness in software. What it can't do is pull out a mechanical tilt: if the bed sits crooked, compensation works at its limit and first layers still differ between the center and the corners. The official procedure removes the tilt by hand, and it's the most underrated mod on this list.

The order goes like this. Power off, unplug, remove the bottom cover — ten 2.0 mm hex screws. Loosen the two Z belt tensioner screws, pull the spring with pliers, remove the upper-left Z belt. Press the bed down until all three Z fixing blocks sit flush with the chassis floor, then restore the belt and tensioner — but leave the cover off. Now lay the printer on its side, raise the bed by pulling the belt, slide an A4 sheet between nozzle and bed and set the gap with the nuts under the bed: center first, then the four corners, two or three rounds. It's right when the paper drags but doesn't get scratched. Clockwise increases the gap, counter-clockwise reduces it. Finish with Settings → Calibration → Auto Leveling.

  • First layers become consistent across the whole plate, not just in the middle
  • Auto-leveling stops compensating for tilt and gets its headroom back
  • The classic "sticks in the center, lifts at the edges" pattern goes away
  • Tools needed: a hex key, a sheet of paper and pliers

Difficulty: high — the machine goes on its side with the bottom open. Price: free. Careful: if the paper won't slide, don't force the head across the plate; you'll score the PEI. 15. Feet, and what goes under them

Good news first: the Centauri 2 ships with vibration-damping feet from the factory. The How-To Geek review credits them for the near-absence of vertical fine artifacts on walls, which is normally an aftermarket fix. Replacing them makes sense when the stock ones have taken a set, or when you want the machine sitting higher — and a printed TPU foot with a PETG-CF core does the same job in an hour of print time.

  • The desk stops acting as a soundboard during fast travel moves
  • At 500 mm/s the printer stays put instead of walking
  • The printed version can be re-tuned for your own furniture
  • Cheaper than any anti-vibration mat, and it doesn't trap heat

16. Printing over LAN instead of the cloud

From version 1.2.0.17 onward, ELEGOO Slicer adds printers straight over the local network: Device → + Add Printer → Refresh, pick your machine, hit Connect. If discovery misses it, there's the manual path — Add Manually plus the IP address shown on the printer's screen. After that the slicer gains a Details button with a built-in control panel and a Print button, and files land on the machine in seconds.

  • You stop depending on cloud uptime and on the mood of the mobile app
  • The file goes over your LAN instead of computer → internet → printer
  • The built-in panel shows print status without extra software
  • "Cloud Access Failed. Error code 2002" stops being a blocker

Difficulty: easy. Price: free. Requirement: printer and computer on the same network. Centauri 2 owners regularly report cloud connection trouble, which is one more reason to move the workflow local. 17. Your own dashboard: elegoo-web, pycentauri, Home Assistant

The second-generation Centauri speaks MQTT, and the broker runs on the printer itself: port 1883, authentication with the access code from the screen, an MJPEG stream on port 8080, five fan channels and CANVAS state in telemetry. The community has reverse-engineered all of it, and real projects have grown around it. elegoo-web comes up with a single Docker command and gives you a browser dashboard with temperature charts, print history, G-code preview, Telegram notifications and — most usefully — Moonraker and OctoPrint compatibility layers, so Mainsail or Fluidd can drive the printer. pycentauri covers the roll-your-own case: a Python library, a CLI, an MCP server, a REST/SSE interface, its own web dashboard and an RTSP bridge for your NVR.

  • A real browser dashboard instead of a phone app
  • Print history, temperature and speed charts, PDF reports
  • A Moonraker layer means Mainsail, Fluidd and familiar clients just work
  • Home Assistant integration for print-event notifications and automations
  • Everything stays on the LAN — no account, no cloud relay

Difficulty: high — you need a home server or a Raspberry Pi and to be comfortable with Docker. Price: free if the hardware already exists. Honest caveat: these projects were written against the Centauri Carbon 2. The open Centauri 2 runs the same ELEGOO OS and the same protocol, but it isn't spelled out in their supported-model lists yet. 18. Printed RFID color swatches

Elegoo spools carry RFID tags, so CANVAS fills in type and color by itself. Third-party filament has to be typed in by hand — and sooner or later you'll start PETG on a PLA profile. The community answer: print keychain swatches in the very filament they represent and drop an NTAG213 sticker inside during a pause. The CANVAS reader treats it like a factory tag. As a bonus you get an honest palette: the color on a store page and the color in a part are two different things.

19. PTFE tube holder and tidy routing

On an open machine you can see the whole filament path — including the fact that four tubes from CANVAS to the head live their own lives, crossing over and rubbing against each other and the frame. A printed holder modeled on the Carbon 2 part bundles them and sets their direction. It's a half-hour print, but feeding gets smoother and the jerk on channel changes disappears.

20. A spares shelf: what to buy before you need it

The Centauri 2 Series wiki is effectively a parts catalog with part numbers: hotend kit B0C241, gearbox B0C1L1, tool head board B0C2G1, pressure sensors B0C2L1, filament wiping assembly B0C0J1. Every page is a photo-by-photo replacement guide. The consumables cost pocket change while the downtime waiting for a package is measured in days, so a couple of items belong on a shelf before anything breaks.

Caveat: some of these are listed as "for Centauri Carbon 2" in the Elegoo store ; the series shares one wiki and one parts tree, but check the part number on the replacement page before ordering. 21. Slicer: profiles, purge volumes and outer wall speed

Centauri 2 support landed in ELEGOO Slicer 1.5.2.2 on June 25, 2026, and the same release reworked default purge volumes so colors bleed less at boundaries. Officially the printer also works with Orca and Cura and takes STL, OBJ, 3MF and STEP as input. Multi-color, though, stays with the first-party slicer: stock OrcaSlicer doesn't know M6211.

  • Updated purge volumes give cleaner color boundaries out of the gate
  • STEP opens directly, so CAD parts skip the conversion step
  • The recommended 250 mm/s is the working speed; 500 mm/s is a ceiling, not a default

22. Firmware: the lite branch and what not to flash

This is the most important entry on the list, because it's the one about not bricking your printer. The Centauri 2 has its own firmware line prefixed with lite — owners report versions like lite1.03.02.26 — while the Centauri Carbon 2 runs 02.xx. Different branches, and the older sibling's file will not work here. Some features on early units genuinely do unlock with an update, yet owners keep reporting that neither OTA nor offline update finds anything: there simply is no Centauri 2 firmware in Elegoo's download center.

  • Your version is in Settings — write it down before you open a support ticket
  • Offline updates load from USB: Settings → Check for Updates → Offline Update
  • Never drop Carbon 2 02.xx files on the drive — that's a different branch
  • Carbon 2 firmware 02.00.02.00 (May 28, 2026) also removed SSH and blocked downgrades

23. Dust protection without an enclosure

The most common thing new open-frame owners say is literally "I don't want dust building up inside." The official answer is the full upgrade kit. The household answer is a cover over a powered-down printer: a piece of fabric or an off-the-shelf dust cover. Elegoo doesn't sell the Carbon 2 side panels separately — owner threads report that support says as much — so don't plan on half-enclosing the machine.

  • Rods and bed stay clean between print sessions
  • Costs almost nothing and requires no disassembly
  • Doesn't hurt cooling, because it comes off before you start
  • Also keeps cat hair out — a surprisingly common source of weird defects

Where to start, in a sane order

Doing all of this at once is expensive and pointless. A sane order goes hygiene and consumables first, then whatever removes your specific pain, and only then the hardware that requires a teardown.

  1. A second build plate and silicone socks — $12 total, and printing stops queueing behind cooldown
  2. Purge ramp and bin if you own the Combo: one evening of printing versus cleanup after every multi-color job
  3. A dryer next to the machine — the biggest visible quality gain per dollar on PETG and TPU
  4. Noise triage by the official list: placement, fans, belts, rods. Free, and it comes before any purchase
  5. LAN printing and, if you have a home server, your own dashboard — you finally see what the print is doing
  6. Nozzle kit: 0.8 mm for housings, 0.2 mm for detail. Self-check after every swap
  7. Manual bed leveling — if first layers still vary across the plate after everything above
  8. CANVAS — once you know why you want four colors and accept the purge waste
  9. The official upgrade kit — if you need ABS and ASA, not just a machine that looks closed

And a word on upkeep: a mod lasts exactly as long as the machine under it. Clean and grease the rods, check belt tension and listen to the fans every couple of months per the general maintenance routine. It's cheaper than any part in the table above.

What doesn't work and isn't worth your time

  • "Just flash Klipper — OpenCentauri and COSMOS exist." Both target the first Centauri Carbon: the patched firmware is described by its authors as a modification of official CC1 firmware based on 1.1.40, and COSMOS as an OS for the Centauri Carbon. For the second generation OpenCentauri only publishes hardware documentation and a firmware archive, and version 02.00.02.00 from May 28, 2026 removed SSH and blocked downgrades. As of August 21, 2026 there is no patch and no Klipper build for the open Centauri 2
  • "A 350 °C nozzle means it handles ABS and nylon." The official spec table lists ABS, ABS-CF, ASA, ASA-CF, PET, PET-CF, PETG-CF, PA, PA-CF and PC as not recommended. The ideal list is PLA, PETG, PLA-CF and TPU. The limit is the missing chamber, not the hotend
  • "I'll just buy the Carbon 2 auxiliary fan and filter." Per the official upgrade instructions the auxiliary fan is part of the left enclosure panel assembly and the composite filter with its servo and dampers is part of the divider. Without panels and divider there's nowhere to mount them, and firmware won't see them until the matching boxes are ticked in Settings → Upgrade
  • "I'll slice multi-color in plain OrcaSlicer." The CANVAS channel change rides on the proprietary M6211 command that stock OrcaSlicer doesn't have: the official multi-color path is ELEGOO Slicer, and owners who insist add M6211 to the Change Filament G-code by hand
  • "Any Centauri Carbon 2 mod will fit." The base, toolhead, spool brackets and CANVAS are shared, so those mods bolt on. Top-cover risers, exhaust adapters, chamber heaters and side-panel guards assume an enclosure the open machine doesn't have
  • "I'll order just the side panels and the door." The only official path is the Model Upgrade Program as a whole — camera, lighting, filter and dampers included; owner threads report that support won't sell the panels on their own
