Best Elegoo Saturn 3 Mods and Upgrades: Films, Heating, Venting
23 Saturn 3 mods the community actually uses: PFA film stock, a flex plate with an endstop spacer, vat heating, outdoor venting, a spare 12K LCD and printable accessories. With prices, STL links and myth-busting.
The Elegoo Saturn 3 is a 2023 resin printer with a 10-inch 12K mono LCD (11520 × 5120), a 218.88 × 122.88 × 250 mm build volume and up to 70 mm/h print speed — still going strong in thousands of workshops, but shipping with no Wi-Fi, no heater and no screen-hour counter. This guide covers what the community actually buys and prints for the Saturn 3: consumables, climate control, ventilation, screen protection and software. We've already covered the machine's quirks in 19 known Saturn 3 issues — here it's mods only. The printer is discontinued, so half of these mods double as a stock-up strategy while parts are still on sale.
1. A Stock of PFA Film: Consumable Number One
Release film is the first thing you'll run out of. The Saturn 3 ships with PFA (nFEP) film, 273 × 176 mm and 0.127 mm thick with 92% UV transmittance — the same pack fits the Saturn 2, 8K and the whole Saturn 4 series. Elegoo claims up to 60,000 release cycles; reality is humbler: regular FEP lasts 30–50 prints, PFA is good for 80–120. The film's main killer isn't wear, though — it's failed-print debris in the vat that the plate presses into the film. We covered those micro-punctures in issue 7 of our Saturn 3 known-issues guide.
- A worn film leaks resin onto the LCD — that's an $87 screen instead of a $6 sheet of film
- A wrinkled or shifted film triggers the 'Resin Tank Status Failure' self-test error (per the Elegoo wiki)
- Replacement follows Elegoo's official guide: loosen the frame screws, swap the film, reassemble
- The printer is discontinued — keeping a 5-pack on the shelf is just common sense
Difficulty: easy, 15–20 minutes. Price: about $29 for a 5-pack on AliExpress (card below).
2. A Second Metal Vat: Resin Swaps in a Minute
Swapping resin color or type with one vat means draining, filtering and scrubbing for half an hour. A second vat fixes that: one for grey, one for clear or water-washable. The official Saturn 2/Saturn 3 vat is aluminum, 292.8 × 172.4 × 33 mm, comes with film pre-installed, a lid and three Allen keys, and has feet that keep the film off your bench. The Saturn 3 uses the same vat as the Saturn 2 — the author of the vat storage system on Printables states it outright: 'The regular Saturn 3 uses the same resin tank as the Saturn 2'. The Saturn 3 Ultra vat is a different part — don't mix them up.
- Fast material swaps with no draining or cleanup
- The lid lets you store resin right in the vat between prints
- After a film swap, check the rim: forum wisdom says look for burrs and sharp edges if the vat suddenly leaks during printing
Difficulty: none — drop it in and print. Price: about $29.
3. ACF Film: Busting the '3x Faster' Myth
ACF is the frosted low-peel-force film Elegoo ships in the Saturn 3 Ultra, marketed as 'up to 3x faster printing with RAPID resin'. You can put it on a regular Saturn 3: the 290 × 195 mm, 0.3 mm sheet fits the vat, and 3DJake explicitly lists the Saturn 3 as compatible. The community, however, pours cold water on the hype: 'ACF is no speed difference and often adds vertical line artifacts to your prints' is the standard r/ElegooSaturn verdict. Ameralabs testing confirmed the vertical lines, early batches tore within 48 hours, and owners also report parasitic light bleed washing out fine detail.
- The real benefit: lower peel force on large flat layers
- The costs: vertical line artifacts, tearing risk, higher price
- ACF wants slower lifts — owners go as low as 45 mm/min with taller lift height
- Bottom line: sticking with PFA on a Saturn 3 is the rational choice; ACF is a deliberate experiment
Difficulty: same as any film swap, plus lift-speed retuning. Price: about $51 for a 5-pack. Frosted side faces the LCD, smooth side up.
4. Magnetic Flex Plate — Endstop Spacer Mandatory
The most popular plate upgrade. Prints grip the Saturn 3's laser-etched plate so hard that scraping them off scratches the surface — a spring-steel flex plate pops parts off with a gentle bend and softens elephant's foot while it's at it. Owners found a bonus side effect: with a flex plate, your effective Z sits below the factory minimum, which fixes finicky first-layer adhesion — 'the flex plate has fixed my issue. I believe its mainly due to the z-offset being able to be reduced beyond the factory minimum.' The Saturn 3 size is 224–225 × 129 mm, shared with the Saturn 2 8K and Saturn 8K, and it carries over: 'any Flex Plate for the Saturn 3 would fit the Saturn 4'. Options: Wham Bam Flexi Plate, KOYOFEI, Sovol — all available on AliExpress.
- Parts pop off with a bend — plate and print stay intact
- Less elephant's foot, easier flat prints
- Thickness compensation is mandatory — see the endstop spacer breakdown
- The skeptic's alternative: print on a raft with a lip — it pries off just as easily, for free
Difficulty: medium — glue the base on straight and recalibrate Z. Price: depends on the brand — look for the 224 × 129 mm size.
5. A Second Build Plate
Same logic as the second vat: while batch one soaks in IPA, plate two is already printing. The official Saturn 3 plate is AL6061 aluminum, 225 × 129 mm, laser-carved, with a big non-slip leveling screw (the Ultra plate is a different part). It's also insurance — if you do gouge your daily plate with a scraper, there's a spare. And no, you don't need to sand it 'for adhesion': the surface is laser-etched at the factory; a light 200-grit scuff is a last resort for genuine adhesion problems only.
Difficulty: none. Price: about $11 — cheaper than most consumables.
6. Drip Bracket: Resin Drains Itself
After a print, uncured resin drips off the plate for a good ten minutes. A drip bracket holds the plate at 45° right over the vat — resin flows back instead of onto your bench and gloves. Proven models for the Saturn 3: Fielies' Drip Bracket (246 downloads, 5/5 rating; print it in ABS-like resin at 0.05 mm with supports), pep_designs' Drip Arm, and MorpheusV's Drip Arm with a ready FDM profile (0.2 mm layers, 6 walls, 25% infill, ~1.6 h; fits Saturn S/2/12K/3). Note: none of these fit the Saturn 3 Ultra — its plate mount is different, as the authors themselves warn.
- Saves resin — everything drains back into the vat
- Less mess on the bench and gloves
- The plate is heavy — print the bracket with high infill (the remix author's advice on Printables)
Difficulty: print and clip on. Price: free STL plus a bit of filament or resin.
7. Vat Cover: Resin Survives Between Prints
Resin hates light, dust and open air. With a cover you can leave the vat full for weeks — just filter before the next print. Solid options: vd853's diagonal cover (370 downloads; oriented diagonally to fit smaller FDM beds), the Sealed Vat Cover — two chemically-resistant PETG/ASA halves plus a TPU gasket (95A shore or softer; works without the gasket too, just less airtight), and the vat storage system with top and bottom lids — vats stack, and one or two fit inside a 7-liter Sistema Klip It airtight container.
Difficulty: PETG print with a brim; the sealed version needs gluing. Price: free.
8. Vat Holder and Drain Station
Draining resin with the vat in one hand and a funnel in the other is how puddles happen. A printed holder keeps the vat vertical: Hasoth's Saturn 3 Vat Holder was modeled specifically for the Saturn 3 vat — the author found the Saturn 2 holder didn't fit and rebuilt the geometry from measurements (the vats are interchangeable in the printer, but accessory fit differs slightly). The deluxe option is the Vat Drainer w/Plate: a station on a 2020 aluminum extrusion with a steel base plate and a locking funnel holder, height-adjustable from a resin bottle down to a 100 ml flask. Always drain through a funnel with a filter: debris in the bottle will ruin your next print.
Difficulty: printing plus a 2020 extrusion and screws for the station. Price: STLs are free; the stainless funnel with filter is about $2 (card below).
9. Elegoo Mini Heater: Warmth for a Cold Room
Resin wants 25–30 °C: cold resin thickens, flows badly, delaminates and won't stick to the plate. The Elegoo wiki's cold-weather advice is to soak the bottle in ~60 °C water for ten minutes — but for daily use a heater is saner. The Elegoo Mini Heater (120 W PTC element, 10,000 rpm fan, its own 24 V power brick — it does not draw from the printer) officially supports the regular Saturn 3 and snaps in place of the stock vent plug in a couple of minutes: 'mini heater installed in the hood', as one Saturn 3 owner puts it. Measured behavior: chamber air climbs from 19 to 25 °C in minutes, but the resin itself takes about an hour to reach 25 °C — switch it on well before printing. In maintenance mode it sips just 4 W.
- Turnkey solution, no soldering; auto logic — heats below 25 °C, stops above
- Con: no switch on the power lead — 'this heater does not have any switch in the power lead'
- Con: the on/off relay cycle ('about a minute, every 2-3 minutes') gave one owner visible layer lines — moving air wobbles the vat temperature
- Alternative: the ChiTu Systems H1 mini heater with an 85 °C auto-cutoff, also Saturn-compatible
Difficulty: a 2-minute install. Price: about $29 on AliExpress ($55 in the official US store).
10. Fermentation Belt: Heat the Vat, Not the Air
A ~$20 homebrew fermentation belt wrapped around the vat is the community's favorite Saturn 3 winter fix. One r/ElegooMars owner reports it 'fits beautifully around my Saturn 3 vat'; another sums it up: 'Bought a fermentation belt to keep the vat around 26c and boom everything started working perfectly!'. Attachment is low-tech: binder clips, two per side ('I also use binder clips to clip the fermentation band to my vat. I use 2 on each side'), zip ties or printed clips. Two caveats: the belt must sit tight against the vat or the heat never transfers, and without a thermostat it overheats even on the low setting — pair it with an external temperature controller and probe (the whole combo runs about $40). The advantage over an air heater: you heat the vat itself, no on/off air cycles — no layer lines.
- Target resin temperature ~26 °C; resin makers recommend 23 °C minimum
- DIY variant: 12 V automotive strip heaters (30–80 W) plus a dual-range thermostat with a remote probe — preheat to 40 °C, hold 35–37 °C during the print; delamination and plate failures disappear
- Even cheaper: a 12 V 40 W oil-pipe heater from Amazon with a digital thermostat
- DIY downside: the cover sits with a small gap because of the wiring
Difficulty: medium — assemble the belt + probe + controller combo. Price: $25–45 all-in. The full vat-heating thread lives on r/resinprinting.
11. Grow Tent: Warm Box and Exhaust in One
'Grow tent with exhaust fan is the universally accepted solution' — that's the stock Reddit answer to any resin fume question. A ~3 × 3 ft plant tent with a reflective lining becomes a printer cabin: a space heater inside, an inline duct fan venting out the window. Real-world budgets: an $80 tent; a grow tent, fans and fittings for about $100; a full kit with ducting around $200. The fans bundled with cheap tents are PC-fan grade — get a proper inline duct fan. In a warm tent set to 75°F (24 °C) some owners run the printer with the cover off entirely, and the whole tent rides nicely on a utility cart.
- Solves three problems at once: heat, fumes, dust

Difficulty: medium — assemble the tent, hang the fan, run the duct. Price: $80–200 depending on tent and fan.
12. Outdoor Venting Through the Stock Port
The bundled USB purifier kills the smell but is 'pretty useless for removing VOCs' — for the volatile stuff you need to move air outside. The community has printed a whole family of adapters for the cover's stock vent port: a 120 mm fan adapter (print it with dense gyroid infill), kssz2's Vent System built around a PVC conduit fitting for a 32 mm (1.25") flexible hose — it mounts on the red cover's stock bosses with M3 screws and works alongside the stock filter — and the classic Saturn Exhaust System. Don't feel like printing? The ready-made VENT80 puts two 80 mm fans and 120 CFM with a speed controller straight onto the Saturn 3 port.
- DIY recipe that works: 100 mm duct + 80 mm fan + two printed parts, vented out a window — owners report zero smell even a meter away
- Carbon mini-filters alone don't cut it in small rooms; the working scheme is filter plus window exhaust
- DIY budget: $15–60 depending on the fan

13. Mars Mate: Filtration When There's No Window
If the window is far and you still need to print — the Elegoo Mars Mate. It's an external purifier with a high-density activated carbon filter: removes up to 95% of TVOC, runs at 35 dB on 6 W, and a built-in VOC sensor switches fan speed automatically. The official compatibility list explicitly includes the 'Saturn 3 Series' — it connects to the expansion port with a hose. Honest math: the filter lasts up to 2 months and a replacement costs $89.99 — a year of filters costs more than the unit. And filtration still loses to outdoor venting; this is the no-window-available option.
Difficulty: plug in a hose. Price: about $85 (card below).
14. USB Purifier: Spare Cartridge and a DIY Carbon Cube
One USB purifier already ships in the Saturn 3 box, and there's exactly one slot for it — a Reddit owner bought the twin pack 'only to find it came with one already and there was only one slot anyway'. The unit is 44 × 44 × 169 mm with a 4,500 rpm fan; the activated carbon cube lasts over a year and is replaceable. It handles smell decently but doesn't protect your lungs — see the venting section. Handy folks build their own: a 12 V 4010 blower, a 4 cm bed of bulk activated carbon and two 10 mm carbon foam pads in a printed housing — refills last 1–3 months and owners rate the efficiency well above store-bought units.
Difficulty: none for the cartridge; the DIY build wants a soldering iron and an hour. Price: about $17 for a spare 2-pack; the DIY version costs pennies.
15. Screen Protection: the Film Dies Instead of the LCD
The Saturn 3's LCD comes with 9H tempered glass factory-installed — 'Saturn 3 has a factory installed screen protector that you can peel off'. That layer is what should die in a resin spill, not the $87 screen: peel the black tape frame around the screen, lift the protector with the cured resin on it, lay a new one, re-tape. Elegoo's own Saturn 3/4 protector has quietly vanished from the store, but 10.1" tempered glass is interchangeable across the series — 'any Saturn 3 screen protector should work fine' — and third-party packs with 95% light transmittance are all over AliExpress and Amazon. One catch: adding your glass ON TOP of the factory layer cuts UV — one owner had to raise exposure to 3.5 s per layer. Cured resin cleans off per the Elegoo wiki: an alcohol-soaked swab around the spot, wait 5 minutes to soften, lift it — never scrub.

- Double protection = less UV: either peel the factory layer or bump exposure
Difficulty: patience and degreasing. Price: about $7.
16. A Spare 12K LCD: a Consumable, Not a Repair
The masking LCD is a consumable rated at roughly 2,000 hours: 'a longer exposure time will use more of the expected 2000 hours lifespan of the lcd'. Real-world life varies wildly — one screen died at 10 months, another faded to a 'weak purple glow' after a couple of prints, others run 7–8 months without a hiccup — against a 3-month warranty. The classic dying-screen symptom: the exposure test lights the whole panel instead of the mask. With the printer discontinued, a spare LCD is strategic stock. It's the same part for Saturn 3 and Saturn 3 Ultra: $129.99 from Elegoo, or ChituSystems' 10.1" 12K third-party panel at ~$119. After the swap, update the firmware — without it the new panel may not expose at all — and mind the fragile ribbon latch we dissected in issue 5 of the known-issues guide.
Difficulty: advanced — teardown, fragile ribbon, recalibration. Price: about $87 on AliExpress.
17. UV LED Array: a Spare for Enthusiasts
The second most failure-prone part after the LCD is the COB light engine behind the Fresnel lens. Degradation symptoms: uneven exposure across the plate and a dim center (issue 13 in the known-issues guide). Curiously, Elegoo doesn't sell the UV board for the regular Saturn 3 at all — the official UV light replacement guide exists only for the Saturn 3 Ultra. Third-party boards from AliExpress fill the gap: 405 nm, 100-chip COB, made for the Saturn 3's 10.1" panel. This is an enthusiast's mod: full teardown, power connectors, and a uniformity check afterwards.
Difficulty: advanced. Price: about $56.
18. A Proper USB Drive Instead of the Bundled One
The community treats Elegoo's bundled USB stick as defective by default — it's the usual culprit behind 'my print stopped at 2%' and files the printer refuses to see. The Reddit recipe: 'Provided USB stick is garbage. Format the new one using Rufus utility in Windows (select non-Bootable option)'. Chitu boards are happiest with sticks up to 16 GB on USB 2.0, formatted FAT32, with .goo files in the root. Read errors, blank squares in the file list and the Memory M11000 message are all dissected in issue 1 of the known-issues guide.
Difficulty: format a drive. Price: a few dollars for a name-brand stick.
19. Firmware V466_2.1-F4120: the One Update You Must Install
Over the Saturn 3's whole life, Elegoo shipped exactly one firmware update — V466_2.1-F4120, dated September 18, 2023. The changelog is one line, but it matters: it fixes a 'potential high temperature hazard caused by prolonged exposure when a print freezes' — before the fix, the UV array could stay lit on a frozen layer, and the shell heated up noticeably within half an hour. If your printer still runs factory firmware, update it. The process follows Elegoo's official guide: files in the USB root, RBF flashes the screen, BIN flashes the mainboard, each applied via Print → select file, with a reboot after each.
Difficulty: medium — just don't mix up the files. Price: free.
20. Slicers and UVtools: Getting the Most Out of .goo
The Saturn 3 prints from .goo files — Elegoo's open slice format. Voxeldance Tango ships in the box with a lifetime license; Chitubox works too (recent versions only — old builds without the ELEGOO SATURN 3 profile write unreadable files), as does Lychee. The secret weapon is the free UVtools: exposure calibration, file repair, format conversion. One trap: per-layer editing of .goo in UVtools sets the PerLayerSettings flag, which Elegoo firmware mishandles — parts come out squashed in Z (issue 16 in the known-issues guide). Calibrate exposure per resin with the standard tests — Cones of Calibration or Ameralabs Town. 3DWithUs' anti-fail settings for stubborn adhesion: 6 bottom layers at 40 s with normal layers at 2.9 s. And remember the non-square 19 × 24 µm pixel — sometimes the honest move is to switch anti-aliasing off.

21. A Wash & Cure Station That Takes a 10-inch Plate
Washing and curing account for half the final quality of a resin print. Both Elegoo stations handle the 10-inch Saturn 3: the Mercury XS Bundle (sealed 7 L wash tank, two L-shaped UV bars with 14 LEDs each plus 4 more under the turntable, a cover that blocks 99.9% of UV) is officially 'directly compatible with ELEGOO Saturn' — the whole build plate hangs in for washing. The Mercury Plus V3.0 offers a 7.5 L tank, hanging brackets for plates up to 10 inches and a 250 × 290 mm curing zone. 3DWithUs' timings for the Saturn 3: a 2-minute IPA wash, then 2 minutes curing upright plus 2 minutes on its side. There's even a printed adapter to wash prints right on the plate at full 25 cm height — honest warning: it takes more than 7.5 L of fluid and the lid won't close. Difficulty: none. Price: Mercury XS Bundle about $99, Mercury Plus V3.0 about $101. Warranty: 24 months on the body; tank and turntable — none.
22. Stretching Your IPA
IPA disappears fast. Rule one: two-stage washing — a dirty tank for the first rinse, a clean one for the final. Rule two: regeneration. Blast the saturated alcohol with a UV nail lamp — the dissolved resin thickens and settles as white flakes on the bottom of the jar — then filter it through a funnel lined with lint-free wipes and repeat. Recovered IPA is only good for the first-stage wash; you won't get it perfectly clean without distillation, which costs more than it saves. Store alcohol in airtight containers — it picks up water in open air and washes worse. And put a silicone mat under your wash zone: cured resin drops just flake off it.
Difficulty: minimal. Price: a UV nail lamp from $5, silicone mats about $5 a pair.
23. Small Printed Comforts: Lid Handle and Tool Caddy
The Saturn 3 cover has no handle, and you lift it with resin-covered gloves. Dodox's handle sticks on with double-sided tape (the author recommends the thicker ~0.8 mm kind) and doesn't care about cover dimensions — an hour of PLA printing. Round it out with the Tool Caddy for the stock hex keys and scrapers, and a Z-axis top cap for the exposed leadscrew — small things that make daily use nicer.
Difficulty: print and stick. Price: free.
Verdict: Where to Start
- A stock of PFA film and a second vat — consumables the printer literally stops without; it's discontinued, so stock up early
- The hygiene kit: drip bracket, vat cover, filter funnel, silicone mat — free STLs plus pocket-change accessories
- A decent USB stick and the V466_2.1-F4120 firmware — five minutes that eliminate a whole class of failures
- Seasonal heating: a fermentation belt with a thermostat (more even) or the Mini Heater (simpler)
- Outdoor venting through the stock port — your lungs are worth it; Mars Mate only if there's no window
- A magnetic flex plate — peel-off comfort, but strictly with an endstop spacer
- A spare LCD and screen protectors — strategic stock for years of owning a discontinued machine
