The Elegoo Saturn 3 is a 2023 MSLA resin printer with a 10-inch 12K LCD (11520×5120), a 218.88 × 122.88 × 250 mm build volume and up to 70 mm/h print speed, now selling from $259. It's been discontinued, but the installed base is huge — and the machine has collected a very specific set of quirks, from a picky USB port to the infamous Chitu "lasagna bug". Here are 19 issues specific to the Saturn 3, each with step-by-step fixes, spare part prices and links to official guides.
Facts below come from the official Elegoo wiki, a five-month lab test by Liqcreate (~190 prints on a store-bought unit), r/ElegooSaturn threads and owner forums. Every fix is tied to its source.
1. USB stick not recognized: FAT32, empty squares and Memory M11000
The Saturn 3 has no Wi-Fi — printing happens exclusively from a USB stick, so any USB quirk brings printing to a full stop. Typical symptoms: files don't show up in the Print menu, you get empty squares instead of thumbnails, or long prints die with a "Memory M11000" error. A sneaky one: sticks that were ever used as Windows or Linux boot drives won't be recognized even after reformatting — leftover partitioning confuses the controller.
- Use a USB 2.0 stick, 32 GB or smaller, formatted to FAT32 — that's Elegoo's official requirement. USB 3.0 and larger drives often aren't detected.
- Check the file format: the Saturn 3 only reads .goo and .ctb. It won't open .stl or .obj — slice them first.
- Rename the file: 15 characters max, no special characters, and keep it in the root of the drive, not in a folder — this fixes "Memory M11000".
- Make sure the slicer profile is exactly "ELEGOO SATURN 3", not Saturn or Saturn 3 Ultra: a file sliced for the wrong machine throws a format error or "Different resolution with projector - 11520".
- If the stick used to be a boot drive, just grab another one — even a full partition wipe doesn't always help.
- Nothing works? Remove the back cover (4 screws, 2.0 mm hex) and plug the stick straight into the motherboard. If files read fine there, the USB extension cable to the front port is the culprit.
2. Random restarts mid-print or won't power on: PSU and power switch PCB
The print aborts and the touchscreen drops back to the main menu; in worse cases the printer runs for 10 seconds and dies, or won't start at all. Owners call the power switch "a common problem with the Saturn 2 and 3", and Elegoo maintains a dedicated troubleshooting page for this pair. Two causes: a degraded 24 V power adapter or a failed power switch PCB. The classic trigger is the voltage dip when the UV array kicks in.
- Measure the adapter output with a multimeter: you want a stable 24 V. The stock unit is 24V 6A (per the label); the wiki allows a 24V 5A substitute for testing.
- Got a spare adapter? Swap it in and run a print.
- Adapter fine? Bypass the switch PCB: connect its terminals with a jumper wire (shown in Elegoo's video) and run a long exposure test.
- Restarts gone with the jumper? Replace the switch PCB. Support ships them on request via 3dp@elegoo.com; seasoned owners order several spares at once.
- Silent mid-print stops (timer frozen, no error, no movement) trace back to the same power chain — one print farm had a Saturn 3 quietly quit at 71%, noticed only because the timer stopped moving.
3. Firmware V466_2.1-F4120: the one and only update, and why it matters
Over the machine's whole life Elegoo released exactly one firmware update for the Saturn 3 — V466_2.1-F4120, dated 2023-09-18. The changelog is one line, but a big one: "Fix the potential danger of high temperature caused by long exposure due to printing stuck." Before the fix, a stalled print could leave the UV array on: in Liqcreate's lab the exposure once got stuck on the first layer, and after ~30 minutes of continuous UV the machine was noticeably hot.
- Download the firmware from the official downloads page (Saturn 3 section). There's no OTA — USB only.
- Unzip the archive to the root of your USB stick. Don't follow the Saturn 3 Ultra video tutorial — the Ultra updates over the network, the Saturn 3 doesn't.
- If old files start throwing "Different resolution with projector - 11520" after the update, re-slice them with a current Saturn 3 profile.
- Screen went "all or nothing" (full exposure or black) after updating? Email 3dp@elegoo.com — support sends a correct firmware file and walks you through rolling back to the older version; owners confirm it works.
4. The LCD dies: dark spots, missing patches, total failure
The Saturn 3's main consumable is its 12K LCD, rated for roughly 2000 hours. Degradation looks like this: prints develop gaps in the same spots of the plate, the exposure test shows growing dark blotches, and in the end stage the UV shines but no mask (the ELEGOO logo) appears at all. One r/ElegooSaturn owner went through three screens in under a year — all replaced under warranty. A common killer is pressure damage: chunks of a failed print floating in the vat get squeezed between the film and the screen.
- Diagnose: remove the vat and run Tool → Exposure. If UV light shines but the "ELEGOO TECHNOLOGY" logo doesn't form, the panel is dead even though the backlight works.
- Reseat the LCD ribbon cable on both ends first: the silkscreen says "LCD/SCREEN" on the screen side and "MB" on the motherboard side. A bad contact mimics a dead screen.
- Inspect the glass and the lens below for resin smears and dust — they create "dead zones" that clean right off.
- Update the firmware: some partial-exposure complaints disappear after it.
- Still dead — replace the screen. The part is shared between Saturn 3 and Saturn 3 Ultra: $129.99 at Elegoo US, about £111 in the UK. Chitu Systems sells the exact same panel for roughly $30 less.
- Run an exposure test within the first week of ownership: the Saturn 3 keeps no screen-hour counter, so log usage manually.
5. Screen replacement gotchas: MB/LCD ribbon, fragile latch, DOA panels
The swap itself is easy (the teardown mirrors the Saturn 2), but there are three traps. First, ribbon orientation: Elegoo's manual is vague and online videos contradict each other. Second, the fragile ZIF latch on the motherboard — one owner flicked it and the whole connector popped off (the A0S0A1 board was replaced under warranty). Third, new screens sometimes arrive dead on arrival, including ones bought directly from Chitu.
- Photograph the old ribbon's orientation before touching anything. Rule: the end silkscreened "MB" goes into the motherboard, "LCD/SCREEN" into the screen.
- Lift the ZIF latch with a fingernail at the edges — no screwdrivers, no prying. It breaks once and forever.
- Run the exposure test on the new screen BEFORE reassembling the housing — DOA panels happen.
- Vertical lines or one side printing oversized after the swap? Reseat the ribbon on both ends; if a few attempts don't help, return the panel.
- Always re-zero the Z axis and reapply the screen protector afterwards: the changed screen+film stack height shifts your calibration.

6. Resin creeps under the screen tape — it's officially not airtight
A rare case of a manufacturer documenting its own weak spot: the Saturn 3 manual states outright that "the Mylar tape surrounding the screen is not completely airtight", so resin drips must be cleaned immediately. In practice the stock black tape also starts peeling after a few hours of printing, especially once resin or IPA touches it. From there liquid heads down — towards the Fresnel lens and the COB light engine, and that's expensive territory.
- Wipe drips near the screen edge immediately with a lint-free cloth — don't wait for the print to finish.
- Cured blobs on the glass: Elegoo's method is an IPA-soaked cotton swab around the spot, 5 minutes of soaking, then a plastic scraper. Scraping is only safe because the Saturn 3 has 9H tempered glass over the LCD.
- Community trick: stick Kapton (polyimide) tape onto a FULLY cured blob and pull it off with a sharp tug — tape won't stick to under-cured resin, which doubles as a readiness check.
- Replace peeling stock tape with proper light blocking tape: fresh tape around the perimeter → screen protector → another layer of tape over the edges. Re-level afterwards.
- Resin on the lens or COB: liquid washes off with IPA; cured resin on the lens usually means replacing the assembly. Avoid third-party COB LEDs — they won't match stock power and you'll be re-calibrating every resin profile.
7. Pinholes in the release film every few prints
The symptom: every ~5 prints tiny pinholes appear in random spots of the film, leaking resin onto the screen. Owners blame "a bad batch of films", but it's almost always debris: failed-print fragments and cured particles in the vat that the plate presses into the film. Note the Saturn 3 ships with PFA (nFEP) film, 273 × 176 × 0.127 mm — not the ACF used on the Ultra.
- Run Tank Clean after every failed print: the thin cured sheet pulls all debris out of the vat. Lift a corner with an old support piece, not metal.
- Filter resin through a mesh funnel (~0.5 mm) before refilling — the official wiki requires the same.
- Inspect prints on the plate before removal: a missing support tip means its fragment is still in the vat.
- Replace film that's whitened, scratched or lost elasticity — the manual lists these as hard replacement criteria. Genuine PFA 5-packs run about $29.
- For perspective: owners report a film lasting up to a year with clean habits — Liqcreate's survived 152 prints and 97,283 layers.
8. The first millimeters print squashed: blame the leveling card
A Saturn 3 classic with its own name — z-compression. A 2.8 mm calibration matrix prints at 1.9–2.0 mm: bottom layers get squeezed, the effective layer height near the base ends up around 0.035 mm instead of 0.05 mm, and rafts come out visibly thin. The cause is the stock leveling card: it's noticeably thicker than the film, so a zero set with it sits lower than it should — 3DWithUs confirmed the same in their review.
- Level with a sheet of regular printer paper instead of the stock card — even Elegoo's support Discord says as much.
- Alternative from 3DWithUs: level directly in the installed vat, pressing the plate against the film — the film thickness is then baked into your zero.
- Reddit fix for an already-leveled machine: raise the plate 7 times by 0.1 mm (+0.7 mm total) and re-save Z=0.
- Verify with a calibration cube and calipers: height should match nominal within a few hundredths.
9. First layer won't stick: why Saturn 3 bottom exposures reach 40–45 seconds
A string of failed test prints is the standard Saturn 3 first-week experience: 3DWithUs had at least five failures in a row on factory settings. A print farm owner on Reddit runs his Saturn 3 at a 45-second bottom exposure — versus 25 seconds on his Saturn 2s and Saturn 4s. Contributing factors: the two-screw ball-jointed plate (the Ultra got four-point leveling), no auto-leveling, and cold, thick resin.
- Raise bottom layers from 2 to 6 and bottom exposure to 40 s (3DWithUs' profile for SUNLU Wax, Elegoo ABS-Like and Anycubic Basic; normal layers 2.9 s at 50 µm).
- Warm your resin to 25–26°C: bottle in warm water (~60°C for 10 minutes), or wrap a heating belt around the vat in a cold room.
- Re-check your Z zero (see issue #8) — squashed bases and adhesion failures usually travel together.
- Degrease the plate with IPA; for stubborn cases give it a light sanding.
- Orient models at 30–60° on ~0.8 mm supports at ~70% density.
- Reality check: one owner got no joy even at 40 s bottoms — the real culprits were a worn film and bad leveling. If your exposures are already high, look at mechanics, not times.
10. The "lasagna bug": ribbons of fully exposed layers
A band of layers gets exposed across the entire screen in a striped ribbon pattern — the print looks like delaminating lasagna. It's not your film and not your exposure: a Lychee Slicer staffer (J3D-Tech) confirmed on Reddit that it's a data-handling bug on Chitubox motherboards, first seen at scale on the Saturn 3 and Saturn 3 Ultra. Reproducing the root cause took the team nearly a year — it strikes randomly, more often with .goo files from Lychee, and has nothing to do with your USB stick.
- Slice to .ctb instead of .goo — the defect shows up far less often with .ctb.
- Turn anti-aliasing completely off: it's the grayscale handling on the board that glitches. ".ctb + AA off" is the community-proven workaround.
- Keep your slicer current: Lychee shipped fixes after their year-long investigation.
11. Anti-aliasing on a non-square pixel: when to turn it off
The Saturn 3's 12K pixel is anisotropic — 19 µm in X, 24 µm in Y — so smoothing acts unevenly per axis. Aggressive AA also blurs exactly the sub-pixel detail you bought 12K for, and on Chitu boards gray pixels additionally provoke the lasagna bug and gray "rings" around features. 3DWork's review recommends keeping AA at minimum, and plenty of experienced owners print minis with it off entirely.
- For minis and micro-detail, switch AA off or set it to minimum.
- Chase smoothness with lower layer height, not smoothing — 3DWork's advice for 12K panels.
- Calibrate exposure per resin with proper tests (AmeraLabs Town, XP2 validation matrix).
- For tinkerers: slicers do no vertical (inter-layer) smoothing at all — that's what the external Voxel Stack Blender tool does, paired with UVtools; a 12K file eats 4–8 GB of RAM. Its input slices must NOT be anti-aliased.
12. Vertical lines on flat walls
Flat surfaces parallel to the Z axis show straight vertical lines — obvious to the naked eye on clear resins, nearly invisible on organic shapes. Multiple reviews noted it on both 12K pioneers (Saturn 3 and Anycubic Photon M5s). Liqcreate reproduced the effect and published a comparison: after swapping the stock film for plain 100-micron FEP the lines got noticeably weaker — light scattering by the new-type film is a major contributor.
- For display-grade clear parts, install plain 100 µm FEP instead of the stock film.
- Angle flat walls slightly off vertical — the lines stop aligning with the screen raster.
- On dark opaque resins the effect is barely visible — pick them when lines matter.
13. Uneven light across the plate and center under-exposure
Elegoo claims ">90% uniformity", which is technically true. Liqcreate's lab measurement (UV meter, 12 points during a white-field print) showed an average of 4.05 mW/cm² with ~9.4% deviation — fine for a hobby machine, but short of the 95–105% pro standard: the plate has weak and strong zones. Another owner measured 4.0–5.6 mW/cm² across units — noticeable unit-to-unit spread. A separate scenario: models in the center of a packed plate crack and fail while edge models print fine — per the official wiki, that's LCD degradation.
- Tune exposure so prints succeed at the weakest spot of the plate — i.e. slightly over-expose relative to the center-optimal value.
- Put critical parts near the center of the field, but don't pack the plate wall-to-wall.
- Run the "white paper test" from the official wiki: paper on the LCD, start Tank Cleaning, judge glow uniformity from above.
- For center under-exposure the wiki prescribes: bottoms +5–10 s, normals +1–3 s, resin at 25–30°C, lift over rafts 7–10 mm instead of 5. If the test shows uneven glow — only a screen swap helps.
- Good news: after 5 months and ~190 prints Liqcreate saw no measurable degradation — treated well, the panel holds.
14. Fans and air purifier not spinning: early-batch defect vs. normal behavior
First, the "fake failure": by firmware design the fans and USB purifier run ONLY while printing — silence at idle is not a defect, the wiki says so explicitly. The real defect existed too: fall 2023 batches shipped with loose wires on the board — side fans and the purifier didn't work at all, and some fans died after 2–4 weeks ("used to be loud, now silent"). Printing without fans slowly cooks the LCD.
- Check the purifier's USB connector seating — it's often recessed or half-out.
- Start a print and listen: fans must spin under load, not at idle.
- Remove the back cover (4 screws, 2.0 mm hex) and reseat the fan connectors — this fully fixed the early-batch units.
- Measure 5 V on the purifier port: no voltage — motherboard replacement; voltage present — replace the purifier. Algorithm on the official wiki page.
- About smell: the tiny carbon filter only dampens odor under the hood, there's no exhaust — ventilate the room. Noise itself is moderate: owners estimate 50–60 dB while printing.
15. The vat wobbles out of the box
From Liqcreate's lab notes on a store-bought unit: the vat thumbscrews have extra play, so the vat sits slightly loose on one side. Print geometry barely suffers, but repeatability when removing/reinstalling the vat does.
- Put plain metal washers under the vat screws — the play disappears completely. A simple fix, if not the most elegant one — that's how the lab itself solved it.
- After any overheat episode (see issue #3) re-check these screws — they loosen.
- The radical option is a rigid metal vat.
16. Editing .goo in UVtools: parts print flattened in Z
An advanced-user trap: after per-layer editing of a .goo file in UVtools, the model prints compressed in height — in the documented case more than 4:1 shorter than expected. The culprit is the PerLayerSettings flag UVtools sets on per-layer edits: Elegoo firmware handles it incorrectly. The case in UVtools discussion #838 was logged on a Saturn 3 Ultra, but it concerns the whole Elegoo .goo pipeline — the same risk applies to the Saturn 3.
- Set PerLayerSettings=0 before export — forcing global settings instead of per-layer ones.
- Do a full re-encode of the file in UVtools rather than a partial parameter edit.
- Update UVtools: the fix landed after discussion #838 (February 2024). Bonus: UVtools ships an "Elegoo Saturn 3" profile that enables printing from PrusaSlicer.
- Simple rule: if you never edit files per-layer, this issue doesn't affect you — slice normally to .ctb/.goo.
17. Magnetic build plate: without a limit switch spacer, Z bottoms out
A flexible magnetic plate — the most popular upgrade — adds a couple of millimeters to the plate stack. Without compensation, homing drives the plate into the screen before the switch triggers: the motor clicks and skips steps, and your zero won't stick. An Elegoo staffer (Owen_Ou) untangled this in a Reddit thread, along with the core confusion: Home is where the Z limit switch triggers; Z=0 is the separately saved print-start height. They are not the same thing.
- Install the spacer on the Z limit switch — it ships with most magnetic plates or is a quick print from a ready-made model.
- With the spacer in place, re-set Z=0 with paper on top of the magnetic plate.
- If the switch itself got damaged from skipped steps, replace it per the official guide: 2.5 and 2.0 mm hex keys, two screws under the middle plate, then Return to zero and re-leveling.
18. Design limits: no Wi-Fi, no hour counter, no power switch
Some Saturn 3 "problems" are deliberate cost-cutting for its $399 launch price (now from $259). No Wi-Fi or camera — USB only; no layer/hour counter — you track screen and film wear manually; no physical power switch — you unplug the cable; and the 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen lists just 4 files per page. Elegoo's own comparison table lays out every difference from the Ultra.
- A Wi-Fi mod exists: a Raspberry Pi Zero W emulating a USB stick (Octoprint-Chituboard project) — files fly over the network, but you still start prints from the touchscreen. Community verdict: "by the time you buy a Pi and mess with the software, you could just sell your 3 and buy an Ultra."
- Track usage in a spreadsheet: take UV exposure hours from the slicer. The screen is rated ~2000 h; replace film by condition.
- Power the printer through a switched socket or a smart plug — you get energy metering for free.
- Keep file names short — paging through 4-item lists with long names is misery.
19. Discontinued: the spare parts situation
The Saturn 3 is no longer in production, and dealer stock is drying up. Genuine screens are the first to vanish; films are still plentiful. Going forward the main channels are AliExpress, Chitu Systems (same panel, ~$30 cheaper) and Elegoo's parts desk at 3dp@elegoo.com — they ship switch PCBs, motherboards and motors with PayPal payment.
- Part numbers to search for: motherboard A0S0A1, lead screw motor A1S011, LCD 50.102.0107 (fits Saturn 3 / 3 Ultra).
- The screen is officially a limited-warranty consumable rated ~2000 h — resin leaks and film damage void it.
- Buying second-hand? Peel back the polyimide tape near the screen and inspect the ribbon cables: resin traces there betray past spills.
- The UV light engine is also available as a spare — but remember: a non-original COB won't match stock power and forces re-calibration of every resin profile.
