What the Mars 5 Ultra already does for you
Before changing anything, it helps to know how the Ultra differs from the base Mars 5 — half the "must-do" advice online was written for last-gen machines and simply doesn't apply here.
- Tilt-release vat. The vat peels away from the print at an angle instead of the plate yanking straight up. Eight spring-loaded metal supports replace the old leveling plates. Speed went from 70 mm/h on the base Mars 5 to 150 mm/h.

1. Spare release film and what the counter actually means
Release film is the one consumable that can let the Mars 5 Ultra destroy itself: a hole means resin under the vat, on the LCD and inside the case. Elegoo sells one 5-sheet FEP kit that covers Mars 4, Mars 5 and Mars 5 Ultra, and it's in our catalog. The official figure is about 100,000 cycles, but real numbers scatter wildly — there are owners with 100,000 layers on one sheet still looking new, and others whose film gave up before 6,000. Film doesn't die of old age; it dies from a stiff scraper, a chunk of failed print left in the vat, or resin sitting for a week.

2. The snap-in film kit instead of hand-tensioning
Some Mars 5 Ultra units ship with a Quick-Release resin tank: the film comes as a ready cartridge with tension already set, and swapping it means pressing four snaps, pulling the old kit and clicking the new one in. No frame, no perimeter screws, no fighting for even tension. On the classic vat the official procedure needs 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mm hex keys, a utility knife, a fresh PFA sheet and a 40 × 40 × 5 mm foam block — the one that came in the packaging and that nearly everyone throws out. There's a workaround: a stack of index cards of roughly the same height does the job.

3. A second metal vat
The dullest mod on this list and the one that pays back fastest. With one vat, switching resin means draining, filtering, washing and drying the only vat you have — and your evening is gone. A second vat turns a resin change into thirty seconds: pull one, drop in the other. It's also insurance for the Friday evening when the film tears and the replacement kit is a week out.

4. Grease the vat screw threads before they seize
A five-minute job people usually learn about too late. The Mars 5 Ultra vat clamps down with two M4 × 51 thumb screws. Resin splashes run straight down those studs into the threads in the tilt unit, cure there and turn into glue. Owner threads include stories of snapped taps from people trying to re-cut the thread after a screw seized solid. The fix is preventive: a smear of thick grease on the threads the first time you assemble it.

The bracket clips to the frame and holds the removed plate at an angle over the vat while resin drains back. Give it a few minutes and a meaningful share of what would have gone into paper towels is back in the vat, with the plate arriving at the wash station nearly dry. 180 likes and 3,425 downloads on Printables; 134 likes and 1,142 downloads on MakerWorld.

7. A printed spatula shaped for the plate
The Mars 5 Ultra's laser-etched plate grips prints hard — and it grips resin just as well. A printed spatula matches the plate profile and sweeps the residue back into the vat in one pass instead of into the bin. A 15-minute print that saves a couple of towels per cycle. 84 likes and 625 downloads on Printables, another 75 likes on MakerWorld.

Resin in an open vat catches dust, hair and stray daylight, and the room catches the smell. A printed lid solves all three and lets you leave resin in the vat between prints instead of draining it every time. The popular version is a rework of Abody's Thingiverse lid resized for a 230 × 230 mm bed, with a handle and the printer name added: 51 likes and 671 downloads. For smaller beds there's a two-piece version that snaps together with a bit of force.

9. Draining the vat into the bottle without a mess
Pouring resin back into a bottle while balancing a heavy vat over a narrow neck is a gamble. This adapter stands the vat upright over the bottle and leaves it there for ten minutes: capillary action does the rest, cleaning the film along the way. The designer made two versions, one for SUNLU bottles and one for Elegoo. A related MakerWorld funnel lists a 36.5 mm bottle neck diameter and recommends printing in PETG. One non-negotiable: filter the resin. Pouring it back without a mesh sends cured crumbs straight into the next print.

The paper funnels in the box are single-use, tear halfway through a pour and don't stop small debris. A stainless funnel with a mesh cleans with alcohol, lasts for years and catches exactly what filtering is for — broken supports and cured flakes off the vat floor. This is the rare two-dollar part that pays for itself within three pours.

11. A drip tray around the vat
The Mars 5 Ultra ships with a drip tray, but it's small and misses plenty: drips off the plate and the vat rim land on the case and then on the bench. A printed two-piece tray wraps the vat, lifts off and washes as one piece. The designer printed it on an Ender 3 with a 235 × 235 mm bed at 0.2 mm layers and 15% infill. Beyond that it's a habit: wipe drips off the case immediately, because cured resin only comes off with alcohol and a blade.

The Mars 5 Ultra cover is a two-handed lift, and in resin-covered gloves that's its own little exercise — wherever you grab, you leave a print. A printed handle sticks on with double-sided tape anywhere on the cover and turns it into a one-handed job. The designer puts it on the front. It's a small thing that pays off on every single print cycle, so dozens of times a month.

Same logic as the second vat, only sharper: while plate one drains and heads to the wash station, plate two is already printing. If you run batches of minis, that literally doubles what an evening produces. The plate is shared with the base Mars 5, so what you're looking for is the "Mars 5 Series Build Plate".

14. Hanging the plate in a wash station
A sore point for Mars 5 Ultra owners: the plate is wider than the Mars 3 and Mars 4 ones and won't fit whole into older compact stations. Owners point to Elegoo's own listing saying the Mercury Plus V2.0 doesn't take the Mars 5 Ultra plate, and the Mercury X has no mount for the Mars 5 series at all. Three ways out. One, get the Mercury Plus V3.0 with its adjustable holder — it swallows the whole plate, and it's the most common recommendation in owner threads. Two, print a mount: there are ready models for the Mercury X, including one whose designer recommends PETG at 15% infill and notes it doesn't intrude into the build area. Three, build one from four six-inch mending plates, screws, nuts and washers — the owner who did that came in under $15, with extra washers in the middle of the plates keeping the build plate from rattling.

Half the pain in resin printing isn't the printer, it's the bench around it. A silicone mat under the vat and the plate catches every drip and cleans in one motion: cured resin peels off silicone as a sheet. Experienced owners go further and run two colors of trays — one for dirty and uncured, one for washed. That's not fussiness: a mixed-up tray is how resin ends up on your hands an hour after the gloves came off.

16. LCD protection: what's fitted and what replaces it
Two questions get constantly conflated here. The Mars 5 Ultra already ships with tempered glass over the LCD — you don't buy a protector, and that's exactly why Elegoo's official method for removing cured resin from the screen (alcohol, five minutes' soak, careful scraping) applies to this machine at all. The real question is what to do when that glass cracks. Elegoo doesn't sell it separately, but owners who asked support got the exact size: 161.36 × 89.88 × 0.06 mm. Third-party glass often doesn't seat properly because of the factory tape around the LCD. The workaround from the forums is acetate sheet — the old overhead-projector kind — cut oversize and taped down: a minute to replace, pennies to buy. The economics are simple: a new LCD is $68.60, a new protector is loose change.

17. The Mini Heater bay — and why it isn't an exhaust port
The most persistent Mars 5 Ultra myth: people see the square opening on the back of the cover, decide it's an exhaust port and try to duct it. It's the mount for the Elegoo Mini Heater, which isn't in the box even though the bay is built into the case. On r/ElegooMars the reply "that's not an exhaust port, that's the Mini Heater mount" pulled 18 upvotes and is repeated by several owners. Why heat at all: Elegoo puts the working range at 25–35 °C and warns that below 20 °C prints start failing — bases won't stick, models drop off supports. Owners aim for 25–30 °C measured with an IR thermometer. The stock heater has a known downside: some owners report vibration visible in the print and move the heater outside the case, blowing through the removable back panel instead.

18. A brewing belt and thermostat on a tilting vat
The classic way to heat resin locally is a fermentation belt — a plain heating band for brewing vessels, for pocket change. The tilting vat adds one catch that has cost people time: fitted too low, the belt fouls the tilt mechanism and stops the vat moving. The fix from owner threads is simple — sit the belt higher up the vat wall and don't cinch it, just let it rest. Paired with a separate thermostat it keeps resin in range regardless of what the room is doing. The other approach, if you need serious heat, is a grow tent around the printer with a greenhouse heater that has its own thermostat plus tip-over and overheat protection. And Elegoo's own trick for a cold start: hold the bottle in roughly 60 °C water until the resin itself reaches 30–40 °C.

19. Ducting fumes out with a printed fan adapter
Since the Mars 5 Ultra has no factory exhaust port, owners build one. The most developed MakerWorld model (127 likes, 454 downloads) takes a 60 mm PC fan: 50 × 50 mm fan hole spacing, 65 × 65 mm case mounting spacing, a 60 mm outlet, and 7 mm deep by 4 mm wide holes for M3 threaded inserts. The designer's photos show a quiet 60 mm Noctua NF-A6x25 FLX running on 12 V. The simpler option is an adapter that sticks on with mounting tape and takes 50 mm ID flexible ducting. From there the hose goes out a window or into a fume cabinet.

20. Elegoo air purifiers and the honest math on carbon
Elegoo offers three air-cleaning options for resin machines: a pair of mini purifiers at roughly $18, a pair of USB purifiers at roughly $17, and the large MarsMate at $85 with a separately sold replacement carbon filter. All three run on activated carbon — and here's the honesty that product pages skip. Carbon binds odour compounds, so it removes smell. It captures volatile organic compounds only partially, and it stops doing so without warning once saturated: no smell does not mean clean air. Hence the community's blunt position — a purifier supplements outside ventilation, it doesn't replace it. A purifier earns its place when ducting simply isn't possible: it cuts the odour concentration near the printer enough to make living beside it tolerable.

21. The built-in eight-copy exposure test
A feature a minority of owners know about: the Mars 5 Ultra can duplicate your model into eight copies and print each at a different exposure. That saves slicing eight separate files by hand and gives you a full bracket in one run. Compare the copies and take the one where fine detail survives but holes haven't closed up. For fine-tuning, dedicated models do the job: AmeraLabs Town (used as the benchmark in reviews), Cones of Calibration from TableFlip Foundry, and box-style tests. Reference points from owner practice: 2.2 seconds is the spec normal exposure, standard resin lands around 2.5 seconds, 10K-grade resin around 2 seconds; on Sunlu ABS-like a working combination is 0.03 mm layers, 1.85 s exposure and 6 bottom layers at 28 s.

22. Turn off TSMC and lift: 22 hours versus 3
The most under-appreciated setting on this machine, and the biggest time saver. Lychee profiles and most advice online were written for printers that lift the plate vertically: they set lift distance, lift speed and two-stage TSMC motion. On the Mars 5 Ultra the peel is done by the vat tilting, not by lifting, so those parameters become pure dead time on every layer. A real case from the forums: an owner clocked 22 hours 46 minutes for 623 layers. After switching off the Lift/Retract Settings and Two Stage Motion Control blocks and zeroing the lift distances, the same print finished in 3 hours 20 minutes. For scale, a healthy reference on this machine is roughly 2,000 layers in about 5 hours.

23. Rest times instead of lift speed
The follow-on from the previous mod: vat tilt speed on the Mars 5 Ultra isn't adjustable at all. The only lever you have over per-layer behavior is the delays — after the light goes off, at the bottom of the vat's travel, and before the light comes on. The working set that owners of auto-leveling machines quote: 3 seconds of wait before cure on normal layers and 15 seconds on bottom layers, 1 second after cure on normal layers and 2 seconds on bottom. From there you tune: at 0.02 mm layers the wait before cure goes up, because resin needs time to flow under the plate; with thicker layers and warm resin that 3-second wait drops comfortably to 0.5 seconds, saving hours on a long print.

24. Picking a slicer: ChituBox, Lychee or ELEGOO SatelLite
The box includes a USB drive with ChituBox Basic, and that's enough: contrary to a widespread belief, the camera and Wi-Fi file transfer work in the free version — the paid tier only adds extra tools. Lychee also carries a Mars 5 Ultra profile, but the free version shows ads and, as of the review period, didn't work with this machine's camera at all. The third option is Elegoo's own SatelLite: free, with node-based slicing, the EVO support system and a customizable resin library, but it exports only .goo by default and its requirements are not modest — 16 GB of RAM, a discrete GPU on the order of a GTX 1050 or RX 480, OpenGL 3.0 and 20 GB of disk; on macOS it needs Monterey 12.0.1 or later and won't run in a virtual machine. 25. UVtools: fixing the sliced file before you print it
UVtools is what separates "printing someone else's profile" from understanding what you're printing. It opens an already-sliced file and shows it layer by layer: it finds islands (regions floating with nothing under them), suction traps, converts formats between machines, repairs broken layers and cleans artifacts. The project is alive: 1,612 stars on GitHub, last commit 20 August 2026, latest release v6.2.0 from 6 August 2026 — worth checking, because resin printing is full of abandoned projects the community still recommends out of habit. UVtools is also the plugin that lifts SatelLite's .goo-only export.

26. Remote printing, camera and time-lapse via ChituManager
The Mars 5 Ultra's camera only comes alive with ChituManager. The sequence: on the printer, Settings — WiFi, join your network, then note the network address under Device info. In ChituBox, slice the model, hit Network Sending and follow the prompt to install ChituManager, then add the printer by that address. Two things trip everyone up. First, time-lapse must be armed before the print starts — you can't get a clip retroactively. Second, the clip is only generated once the model passes 50 mm in height, so small minis produce no video at all. And a third, about the camera itself: failure detection only kicks in once the model rises above the vat rim, so don't count on it during the first layers.

27. Home Assistant over SDCP and the four-connection cap
If you already run Home Assistant, the Mars 5 Ultra drops in as an ordinary device. The Elegoo Printers for Home Assistant integration talks SDCP over WebSocket, sits in the default HACS list, has 175 stars and is actively maintained — last commit 30 July 2026. Mars 5 and Mars 5 Ultra are named among the fully supported models. You get status, layers, progress, a thumbnail of the current print, a live camera, plus pause and stop. Worth knowing separately is a limit almost everyone hits: the printer holds no more than four simultaneous connections, and the video stream eats one of them — an open ChituManager, a phone and Home Assistant together bump the ceiling fast. The integration ships an optional proxy that routes every command and the video stream through a single connection.

28. Manual plate fine-tuning and the patch firmware
Auto-leveling on the Mars 5 Ultra works, but if one corner is stubbornly high, Elegoo has an official manual procedure — and it's not trivial. First, set bottom exposure to 60 or 90 seconds in the slicer and print a test model without the vat: the long exposure buys you time at the screws. Tear a sheet of A4 into four and lay the pieces on the LCD corners. If a Print Abnormal dialog appears, tap Mandatory Printing. During the first layer's exposure, tug each piece: a correctly clamped one pulls out but won't push back in. Loosen the light corner slightly, counter-clockwise, with a 2.5 mm hex key, and re-check all four corners after every adjustment. If that isn't enough, Elegoo provides a patch firmware, Chitugcode.gcode: copy it to the root of the USB drive with no folder and no renaming, and run it like a print. The last resort is loosening the four cantilever mounting screws with a 4 mm hex key after heating them with a hairdryer for two to three minutes, because the threads are glued.

29. Standoffs and lock nuts on the plate screws
A continuation of the previous mod for owners whose spring-loaded plate has drifted so far in one corner that stock adjustment runs out. The designer's idea: pull the stock plate screws, fit set screws, drop a printed standoff over each and lock it with a nut — adjustment that stays put instead of drifting back. To give yourself time to adjust, the designer made a test file with 1 second exposure and a 120-second pause before lift: that's exactly two minutes of paper-tugging time. The rule is easy to remember — paper moves freely, nut goes up; paper is pinned solid, nut goes down. A related model skips the printed standoff entirely: four M4 × 20 set screws and four M4 nylon lock nuts or threaded inserts.

30. A Wham Bam flexible plate and the Z-offset patch
The riskiest mod here, and the only one that genuinely needs weighing twice. A flexible magnetic plate removes the laser-etched plate's core annoyance: the print flexes off with the sheet instead of being pried up with a blade. The catch is that on a tilting-vat machine with a spring-loaded plate, the sheet's added thickness breaks auto-leveling and has to be compensated in firmware. Wham Bam publishes a free GCODE file on Cults3D for exactly this — Z Axis Adjustment for Mars 5 Ultra with Wham Bam: put it on a USB drive, run it as a print, and it patches the firmware for the flexible plate's thickness. Afterwards you must run the standard manual leveling routine. And the designer's own warning: every printer firmware update means running the file again. Plus the honest caveat: Wham Bam's official compatibility list for the 160 × 96 mm flexible plate names the Mars 4 9K, Mars 4 Ultra 9K, Mars 5 and Mars 5 Pro — the Mars 5 Ultra isn't on it, even though the company publishes a patch file specifically for it. Formally, you're running an unvalidated combination.

Where to start
- Spare film and a second vat. Not a mod, insurance: without them any failed print becomes a week of downtime, and one leak becomes a $68.60 LCD bill.
- Drip bracket and printed spatula. An hour of printing each, and they remove the worst part of the hobby — the cleanup after every cycle.
- Proper tools and a silicone mat. Silicone in the vat, metal on the plate, cutters on the supports. Cheaper than any repair.
- Slicer settings: kill TSMC and lift. Free, half an hour of fiddling, and prints can speed up several times over. Do this before hunting for hardware faults.
- Temperature and ventilation. Below 20 °C there's no point printing, and fumes need to leave the room regardless — ducting first, purifier second.
- The eight-copy exposure test. Once the mechanics and temperature are sorted, dial the resin in.
- Remote printing and Home Assistant. When everything runs reliably and you just want to watch without getting up.
- Manual leveling, standoffs and the flexible plate. Only when a specific problem resists the standard tools. This is intervention with risk attached.

What not to do
- Don't duct the opening on the back of the cover. It's the Elegoo Mini Heater mount, not an exhaust port.
- Don't treat vat clean as a cure-all. It exposes the full LCD frame and lifts residue as one sheet, but the unexposed border around the vat — several millimeters wide — is left untouched, and that's exactly where a forgotten fragment punches through film and screen. After any failed print, drain through a filter and inspect the film. Handy trick: drop a piece of broken support into the vat before running vat clean, and the resulting tab lets you peel the sheet by hand.
- Don't stick a second protector over the factory glass. It's already there, and third-party glass won't seat properly over the perimeter tape anyway.
- Don't expect the camera to save a print. Failure detection only works once the model clears the vat rim, and the first layers are the danger zone.
- Don't port vertical-lift profiles to this machine. Lift distance, lift speed and TSMC do nothing on a tilting vat except slow it down.
- Don't double up supports "to be safe". They fail more often than they hold: fewer supports with a larger contact diameter works better.
- Don't rely on a carbon filter as your only protection. Carbon removes odour, not volatile organic compounds, and it saturates without warning.
