25 Elegoo Mars 5 Upgrades That Are Actually Worth It
Twenty-five Elegoo Mars 5 upgrades owners actually run: spare FEP film, a metal vat, extraction through the stock exhaust port, the Mini Heater, a PrusaSlicer profile and UVtools — with prices and a clear list of what simply doesn't work on the base model.
The Elegoo Mars 5 is a $179 MSLA printer with a 6.6-inch 4K mono panel (4098 × 2560, 35 µm pixel), a 143.43 × 89.6 × 150 mm build volume, up to 70 mm/h of print speed and a 405 nm COB light source. It's a deliberately stripped-down machine: files arrive by USB stick only, and there's no Wi-Fi, no camera and no vat heating. That's exactly why people mod it — almost everything it lacks bolts on from the outside for sensible money. Below are 25 upgrades owners actually run, from $25 consumables to a DIY ESP32 vat heater. How the plain Mars 5 differs from the Ultra — and why it matters for mods
Half the mods you'll find searching for "Mars 5" were actually built for the Mars 5 Ultra. That's a different machine: different panel, a tilting vat, a different menu tree. Printed parts from the Ultra often don't fit, and leveling instructions simply don't match what the plain model shows on screen. Keep the differences in front of you.

1. Spare release film — and how to reset the counter
The film in the bottom of the vat is a consumable Elegoo explicitly excludes from warranty. The official five-sheet pack for Mars 4/5/5 Ultra costs $24.99, each sheet is 206 × 146 × 0.15 mm, and Elegoo claims 60,000+ releases. Owners use a simpler yardstick: roughly 4–5 kg of resin through one sheet before scuffs and pinholes show up. A cloudy or slack film is the number one reason a print tears off the plate and ends up welded to the bottom of the vat.

2. A second vat instead of endlessly washing the first
The stock Mars 5 vat uses an aluminium alloy frame, twin pour spouts and replaceable lock screws. A second one at $33.99 kills the most tedious job in resin printing: changing resin. No draining, no alcohol wash, no waiting for it to dry — pull one vat, drop in the other, keep printing. It doubles as insurance: if the film tears at 2 a.m., you already have a working set.

- Each vat stays married to one resin type — less chance of ruining a clear with a grey
- A ready spare for a punctured film or a scratched frame
- The alloy frame doesn't warp under screw tension the way the plastic vats on older Mars machines did
Difficulty: easy. Cost: $33.99. Fitment: plain Mars 5 only — the Mars 5 Ultra vat is a separate part with a tilt mechanism, and the two don't interchange. Warranty runs six months and excludes scratches, drops and impacts.
3. Protecting the panel — and what you must never clean it with
The Mars 5 spec sheet lists screen protection as "PET scratch-resistant film". Not tempered glass. That matters, because Elegoo's own guide — soak cured resin in alcohol, wait five minutes, lift it off with a scraper — carries a caveat right there: the method only applies to printers with glass over the panel. On a Mars 5 a scraper will slice straight through the film, and underneath sits a thin polarizer. Tear that and the whole panel is scrap. Owners of older Mars machines learned this the expensive way back in 2023.
- Third-party protectors (five-packs, around 0.125 mm thick, roughly 95% light transmission) sit on top of the factory layer and take the damage instead
- Resin drips come off with a lint-free cloth and alcohol — no pressure, no metal
- Diagnosis without disassembly: pull the vat, lay a sheet of A4 on the panel and run "Tank Cleaning" for a full-screen exposure. Look straight down — visibly darker patches mean the light source is degrading
- Second check: run the Elegoo logo exposure test from the touchscreen and confirm the pattern is complete

4. A second build plate
The Mars 5 plate grips prints through its laser-engraved surface and pops off with a quick-release lock. A second plate at $43.99 turns your workflow into a conveyor: pull one with the print on it, send it to the wash station, drop in the other and start the next job. On a machine that tops out at 70 mm/h — where overnight prints are the norm — that's several hours a week back.

- Worn engraving on the first plate stops being an emergency — you just fit the second
- Fits both Mars 5 and Mars 5 Ultra; it's a shared part across the series

Difficulty: easy. Cost: $43.99. Warranty: six months, excluding scratches and drops — and deep gouges from a metal scraper count squarely as impact damage.
5. Level the printer — the free mod that saves your panel
The Mars 5 has adjustable feet, and Elegoo calls them out as a feature for a reason. In this thread about resin spilling on a Mars 5 (63 comments) the owner filled below the MAX line and came back twenty minutes later to a puddle at the front. The community's leading theories: the printer or the desk sits at an angle, so the level at the front edge ends up above the mark; or the vat lock screws weren't tight and the vat lifted with the plate.
- A plain bubble level on the chassis — five minutes and zero cost
- Check both axes: a sideways tilt is just as dangerous as a forward one
- Hand-tighten the vat screws before every print — make it part of your pre-flight check
- The MAX line assumes a level machine; it carries no margin for tilt

6. Flexible magnetic plates: why they're a trap on the Mars 5
The temptation makes sense — flex plates are standard on FDM now, and third-party kits exist for the Mars 5: two 160 × 95.6 mm spring steel sheets plus a magnetic base. The problem is that the Mars 5 levels itself with a mechanical sensor. It reads the extra layer under the plate as a foreign object: the owner in this thread from 10 July 2026 got "Foreign matter detected, please troubleshoot" on a routine return-to-home. The re-leveling guides that exist were written for the Mars 5 Ultra, whose menu works differently.
- The upside people chase: prints pop off by flexing the sheet, no scraper and no scratches
- Downside one: auto-leveling has to be recalculated by hand, and the plain model has no menu entry for it
- Downside two: the add-on raises the resin level in the vat — one of the main theories in the spill thread
- Downside three: a wrong zero height either blocks the print from starting or crushes the plate into the film
Difficulty: moderate — and here "moderate" means read first, buy second. Cost: $25–35 a kit. Our take: on a Mars 5 you're better off buying a second stock plate and a decent scraper than fighting the sensor. 7. A printed angled drip bracket
The most popular printed mod for the Mars 5: a bracket that hangs the plate at an angle directly over the vat. Resin runs back where it came from instead of onto your desk, your floor and you. The Elegoo Mars 5 & 5 Ultra Drip Bracket by 3Dwork.io has 180 likes and 3,420 downloads — a lot for an accessory tied to one specific printer.
- Returns a meaningful share of resin that otherwise drips into the bin
- Removes the biggest mess source in resin printing — drips while carrying the plate
- Prints in a couple of hours in plain PLA and needs no hardware
- Your hands are free while it drains, so you can get the wash station ready
Difficulty: easy, any FDM printer will do. Cost: free. Fitment: the author lists Mars 5 and Mars 5 Ultra but tested on the Ultra — check the mounting dimensions against your plate before printing. If you need somewhere to source models, we rounded up options in where to download 3D models.
8. The right scraper, a silicone spatula and a mat
The Mars 5's bundled tools are honest but not good. In this starter-kit thread owners put it bluntly: the stock metal scraper has pointy corners that "will scratch the crap out of your lovely etched build plate", and the plastic one is too thick to slide under a thin raft. The working combo is a short metal scraper bent at 45 degrees, used only on the plate, and a silicone spatula used only in the vat.

- A silicone spatula won't tear the film when you stir resin or fish for cured chunks on the bottom
- There's a printed spatula shaped to the Mars 5 plate (84 likes, 625 downloads) that clears leftovers without touching the engraving
- A silicone mat under your teardown turns cleanup into "roll it up and rinse" — official pairs start at $5.35

9. A vat lid for the gaps between prints
If resin lives in the vat between prints — and it does for anyone printing regularly — it needs a cover. There isn't a stock one: the acrylic hood lifts off whole and leaks light around the edges. The printed Mars 5 vat cover bolts on using the same thumbscrews that hold the vat itself. The author put "not for ultra" in the title on purpose — the vat geometry differs.
- Resin stops collecting dust, which is what punctures film later
- Noticeably less smell in the room between prints
- Stray light can't start curing the top of the resin
- You can lift the vat out and store it in a cupboard without pouring resin back into the bottle
Difficulty: easy. Cost: free. Fitment: plain Mars 5 only. A lid is not ventilation: it cuts evaporation but vents nothing out of the room.
10. A metal funnel with a filter
The paper funnels in the box soak through and collapse at exactly the moment you're holding a full vat of resin. A stainless funnel with a mesh filter, from $2.21, catches cured fragments — the same ones that later punch a hole in your film and cause prints to fail at the same height every time. Elegoo's own edge-warping guide lists filtering resin before printing as step one.
- Screens out cured chunks that get pressed into the film as the plate descends
- Washes with alcohol and lasts for years, unlike disposable paper cones
- The rigid spout doesn't fold under the weight of resin
- Lets you recover resin after a failed print instead of binning the lot
Difficulty: easy. Cost: from $2.21 — see the card below. Routine: filter after every failed print and every few successful ones — the habit multiplies film life.
11. Warm the resin and retune for cold rooms
The cheapest Mars 5 upgrade costs nothing and happens before you buy anything. Elegoo's official position: the ideal room temperature for resin printing is 25–35 °C, and below 20 °C prints start failing. The recommended resin temperature is 25–30 °C. If the room is colder, warm the bottle in water at around 60 °C for about 10 minutes so the resin comes up to 30–40 °C and flows again.
- Add 5 seconds to bottom-layer exposure and 0.5 seconds to normal layers
- Increase the wait before cure and the lift distance
- Reduce lift and retract speeds — thick resin can't flow back under the model in time
- For edge warping Elegoo suggests bigger steps: +5–10 seconds on bottom layers and +1–3 seconds on normal ones
Difficulty: easy. Cost: nothing. 12. The Elegoo Mini Heater on the expansion port
The Mars 5 heats neither the vat nor the chamber. The official way to add that is the Mini Heater, from $29 on marketplaces ($55 direct from Elegoo): a 120 W PTC element with a 10,000 rpm fan in a 59 × 71 × 132 mm housing, shipped with two filters and an adapter plate. It plugs into the printer's expansion port, kicks in automatically when the chamber drops below 25 °C and shuts off above it.
- Runs unattended — plug it in once, no separate thermostat needed
- A PTC element self-regulates and won't run away if the fan seizes
- Heats chamber air, so vat and plate come up together, with nothing touching the resin
- Twelve months of warranty on the body (filters, like every Elegoo consumable, carry none)
Difficulty: moderate — you need to find the expansion port and route the cable under the hood. Cost: from $29 — see the card below. Limitation: the 25 °C threshold is baked in and can't be changed, and warming air is slower than heating the vat directly. In exchange, it's the only option that never touches resin.
13. A fermentation belt with a separate thermostat
The grassroots alternative to the official heater: a rubber fermentation belt for about $30, wrapped around the vat rather than the chassis so heat goes straight into the resin. Owners report plate adhesion failures and delamination disappearing overnight. But the same thread carries the critical warning: without a separate thermostat the belt will happily cook resin past 40 °C, because it was designed to warm barrels, not a one-litre vat.
- Heats the resin directly, so it reaches temperature faster than warming air
- Costs about a third of the official Mini Heater
- A digital thermostat with a probe taped to the vat is mandatory; target 25–30 °C
- A community variant of the same idea uses automotive heating tape at 30 W per metre with a thermostat and probe, holding +35…+37 °C — the panel itself adds another degree or two while printing
Difficulty: moderate — no soldering, but the thermostat isn't optional. Cost: around $30 for the belt plus a thermostat. What not to do: put a space heater in the same enclosure. In this grow-tent thread the community tore the poster apart for exactly that — a ceramic heater sitting next to an open tub of isopropyl alcohol.
14. An open-source ESP32-C3 vat heater
The deepest of the thermal mods is the open-source Resin-Vat-Heater project. An ESP32-C3 board, a GDEH0154D67 E-Ink display, a settable temperature and timeout — and the heat comes from a flat 140 × 23 mm PCB element that sits directly under the vat: a 2 m trace 0.4 mm wide and 0.018 mm thick, 50 mΩ resistance, 3 A working current, with temperature read by a 10 kΩ NTC. The display shows what no commercial heater does: target, actual vat temperature and time remaining.
- The repo carries the schematic, PCB layout, the .ino firmware and CAD models — it's fully reproducible
- Everything fits inside the printer, nothing hangs off the outside
- It reports actual resin temperature rather than the on/off behaviour of a threshold heater
- The timeout stops it cooking resin for days if you forget to switch it off
Difficulty: expert — soldering iron, programmer and knowing what you're doing. Cost: the price of a board and components. Project health: alive but untouched since April 2025, 15 stars on GitHub, no license file. The README warns that the display's RES and CS lines are mislabelled on the board (already handled in the code) and that you must set the heating element resistance in firmware by hand.
15. Venting outdoors through the stock exhaust port
The Mars 5's biggest advantage for modding: it has a dedicated exhaust port. External systems plug straight into it, so there's no DIY enclosure to build. The ready-made VENT80 kit at $79.95 uses dual inline 80 mm fans for 120 CFM, a 3-inch duct 2.4 m long in two sections, a variable speed switch and 12 V 0.3 A power. The maker claims 30+ air changes per minute inside the printer chamber and lists the Mars 5 explicitly as compatible.
- Fumes go outside instead of circulating inside the chamber
- A quick-disconnect joint means you can unhook the printer and move it without tools
- Every plastic part of the system is published free, so you can source the hardware yourself
- A no-purchase alternative: a set of printed adapters for the same port covering four hose options — 147 likes and 1,461 downloads, with the Mars 5 named explicitly
Difficulty: moderate — you need a route to a window or duct and a source of fresh make-up air. Cost: $79.95 assembled, free if you print the parts. An honest limit: the maker states outright that residual odour remains and you should stay out of the room for 24 hours after a print. 16. Mars Mate — and why the USB purifier won't fit
Mars Mate, from $85 ($139 direct from Elegoo), is the large purifier that hangs off the expansion port: up to 95% TVOC removal, 6 W, 35 dB, a 210 × 247 × 410 mm body including the hose, and a built-in VOC sensor that tells you when the cartridge is spent. Filter life is up to two months and a replacement starts at $63. The USB purifier, on the other hand, will not work on a Mars 5 — and that's not guesswork: the printer's own spec sheet says under "Air purifier" that USB connection is unavailable and only Mars Mate is compatible.

- The battery-powered Mini Air Purifier, from $18 (2000 mAh, up to 24 hours, four carbon inserts included) can sit inside the chamber, but it only recirculates air
Difficulty: easy. Cost: from $85 plus $63 per replacement filter — both cards are below. Don't confuse the two jobs: a carbon filter binds odour inside the chamber; only outdoor extraction removes fumes from the room. They aren't interchangeable. Warranty is twelve months on the body and none on the carbon cartridge.
17. A DIY carbon filter and a box-and-duct extractor
If the official accessories are unavailable or too expensive, both jobs are DIY-able. Option one is a compact carbon filter that lives under the hood: a printed 42.5 × 42.5 × 74 mm housing weighing 73 g, a 4010 blower on 12 V stepped down to 3.5 V so it stays quiet, and a 4 cm bed of activated carbon backed by a 2 cm foam layer. One fill lasts its builder one to three months.
- Carbon is refilled by the handful rather than by $63-and-up cartridge
- Power taps off the stock chamber fan, so no extra wall socket
- Option two: put the printer back in its own shipping box — cut a hole in the lid, print a round adapter, run 100 mm ducting to a window and fit an 80 mm fan
- Mount the fan as an extractor, not a blower, so the box runs at negative pressure and doesn't push fumes into the room
Difficulty: moderate — printed parts plus straightforward wiring. Cost: a fan, some ducting and carbon. The thing to internalise: filters and extraction solve different problems. A filter keeps odour inside the chamber; extraction removes fumes from the room. Real protection is extraction plus PPE: nitrile gloves, eye protection and a respirator.
18. A proper USB stick instead of the bundled one
With no Wi-Fi and no network, the USB stick is the Mars 5's only delivery channel — and it triggers a lot of panic. Elegoo's requirement is simple: FAT32, 16 GB or smaller. Drives outside that either aren't detected or transfer unreliably. The second most common cause of a "no USB drive" message is special characters in the file name.
- Keep one known-good 8–16 GB stick formatted FAT32 beside the printer and never repurpose it
- File names: letters, digits, hyphen and underscore only
- If your computer can't see the stick either, the stick is dead — the printer isn't the problem
- "It only reads the bundled drive" comes up constantly in the community and is almost always format or capacity

19. Picking a slicer for the GOO format
This is where the Mars 5 quietly traps newcomers. Per Elegoo's official format table the plain Mars 5 reads GOO only. A .ctb file sliced "like for a Mars 3", or borrowed from a Mars 5 Ultra owner, simply won't appear on screen — and people spend an hour blaming the USB stick. The Mars 5 Ultra, by contrast, reads both .ctb and .goo.
- Chitubox — one of the two slicers named in the Mars 5 spec, with a free tier
- Voxeldance Tango — the other official one; Elegoo pre-pays the licence and it unlocks with the printer's serial number
- ELEGOO SatelLite — the free first-party slicer, reads .stl and .obj, exports .goo by default (exactly what a Mars 5 wants) and ships the EVO auto-support system
- Lychee Slicer — Lite is free with ads, Plus costs €9.99 a month or €99.90 a year; it writes .goo, but check the printer list inside the app
Difficulty: easy. Cost: zero with SatelLite or Chitubox. Practical advice: start with SatelLite — it's free without asterisks and outputs the right format by default, so you can't get this wrong.
20. PrusaSlicer and the ready-made Mars 5 profile
Here's the story that shows just how separate the plain Mars 5 really is. In August 2025 a user asked in the UVtools discussions why PrusaSlicer's profile installer listed every Mars including the Ultra, but not the non-Ultra Mars 5. The maintainer's answer was two words long — "It's not the same machine" — and he built the .ini for the base model on the spot. The file lives in the UVtools repo and drops into PrusaSlicer's printer folder.
- Bed 143.43 × 89.6 mm, display 4098 × 2560, 150 mm of height — geometry exactly matching the Mars 5
- Elephant foot compensation is set to 0.2 mm in the profile
- Working rest times are written in: 3 seconds before cure on bottom layers and 2.5 on normal ones, 3 and 1 second after cure
- Lift 7 mm on bottom layers and 5 mm on normal, lift speeds 80 and 100 mm/min, retract 150 mm/min, light PWM 255
Difficulty: advanced — PrusaSlicer doesn't write .goo itself, so you slice to SL1 and convert through UVtools. Cost: free. Bonus value: even if you stay on Chitubox, those numbers are a useful baseline for dialling in rest times and lifts. The feature request for native .goo support in PrusaSlicer has been open since 10 December 2023 and is still unanswered.
21. UVtools: calibration, file repair and conversion
UVtools is the main third-party tool in resin printing and one of the few you never have to ask "is it still maintained?" about. 1,610 stars and 142 forks on GitHub, AGPL-3.0, version 6.2.0 released 6 August 2026 with repo commits as recent as 20 August 2026. It works on the already-sliced file: it opens .goo, shows it layer by layer and lets you fix what the slicer missed.
- Island detection — patches of a layer floating in mid-air that are guaranteed to tear loose
- Suction cup detection, the reason hollow models blow themselves apart
- Elephant foot compensation on bottom layers
- Calibration generators: exposure time finder and a resin tolerance test for your specific bottle
- Editing machine parameters directly in a finished file, with no re-slice
Difficulty: advanced — the interface is dense and intimidating cold. Cost: free. Neat detail: the same UVtools ships as a plugin inside ELEGOO SatelLite, and that's exactly how SatelLite exports anything other than .goo. Elegoo published the .goo format spec but hasn't updated it since March 2023, so UVtools is what actually keeps up with the container.
22. Dialling in exposure for your specific resin
A ready-made resin profile is a starting point, not a destination. Batch, room temperature and bottle age all move exposure noticeably, and no factory table accounts for that. The order that saves the most time: find the range with one test print, then check fine detail on a comprehensive model.
- RERF — eight squares at different exposures in one model; a run takes 10–14 minutes and hands you the working range immediately
- XP2 Validation Matrix by Photonsters — a matrix that pins down exposure in a single pass
- Cones of Calibration V3 — two sides of five cones each; the count of good cones tells you whether to raise or lower exposure
- AmeraLabs Town — a calibration "town" that checks about ten parameters at once and ends up on a shelf rather than in the bin
Difficulty: moderate. Cost: free, apart from the resin you burn. Vendor baseline: for edge warping Elegoo recommends raising bottom exposure by 5–10 seconds and normal exposure by 1–3 seconds. How to read the results is covered in our resin guide.
23. A wash and cure station
The Mars 5 builds inside 143 × 90 × 150 mm, so every station in the Mercury line clears it on volume. Mercury Plus V3.0, from $101 ($199.99 direct from Elegoo), gives you a 7.5 L wash tank, a Ø250 × 290 mm curing zone, 24 UV LEDs at 405 nm and a timer up to 30 minutes. Mercury XS Bundle, from $99 ($229.99 direct from Elegoo), splits the two: the curing station uses two L-shaped bars of 14 LEDs each plus four more under the turntable, the tank holds 7,000 ml, and the cover blocks 99.9% of UV.
- Community advice: between Mercury X and XS take the XS — it includes a handheld UV lamp for curing the insides of hollow models
- Separate wash and cure on the XS lets you wash one batch while curing another
- Buying direct from Elegoo there are ready printer-plus-station bundles from $309, depending on the current promotion
- A stopgap on a budget: an ordinary 405 nm nail lamp, roughly 20 minutes a side with a flip in between

24. A printed plate holder for the wash tank
A small thing that removes the worst step in post-processing. The normal routine is to scrape the print off the plate and then drop it in the wash basket — and that's precisely where delicate parts snap. 25. Stretching your alcohol and going water-washable
Isopropyl alcohol is the second biggest running cost after resin, and it disappears fast if you wash carelessly. The routine that stretches it: leave the dirty alcohol under UV, let the dissolved resin drop out as white flakes, then filter it through lint-free wipes. It won't come back clear — that needs distillation — but it's perfectly good for a first rinse.

- A spray bottle of clean alcohol for the final rinse stops models drying sticky and glossy
- The alternative is water-washable resin — the Mars 5 spec lists it as supported, and it removes alcohol from the workflow entirely
- Never pour resin-laden alcohol down the drain: cure it fully under UV first, then bin the solids
Difficulty: moderate — it takes discipline and a separate container per stage. Cost: saves a consumable. The catch with water-washable resin: models take noticeably longer to dry, and dirty wash water is just as unsafe for the drain — it gets cured first too.
Where to start
Nobody needs all twenty-five at once. Here's the order to work through them — from what pays for itself in week one to what you tackle once you've hit the machine's ceiling.
- Level the printer and tighten the vat screws. Zero cost, and it prevents the most expensive failure there is — resin under the vat
- A proper FAT32 stick under 16 GB and a slicer that writes .goo. Half of a beginner's "broken Mars 5" is the wrong file format
- Spare film and a metal funnel with a filter. Two consumables that directly extend the life of a $39.99 panel
- Extraction through the stock exhaust port. The one item on this list about your health rather than print quality — and the Mars 5 is already set up for it
- A wash and cure station. Without one, resin printing turns into jars and lamps, and surface quality drifts batch to batch
- Heat: free parameter changes first, then a Mini Heater or a belt with a thermostat. In winter this is the line between printing and not printing
- UVtools and calibration models. When you want everything that 35 µm pixel can give, this is where it starts
One last thing: no mod replaces the routine. Filtering resin, holding the film up to the light, wiping the panel with a lint-free cloth, snugging the vat screws — that's twenty minutes a week which does more for you than half the list above.
