The Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra is a resin printer with a 153×78×165 mm build volume, a 7-inch 9K screen (8520×4320, 18 µm pixel) and a tilting vat that peels each layer at an angle, cutting print time by roughly 30% compared to a straight vertical lift. That mechanism, plus the automatic Z-zero routine and the Wi-Fi camera, is what makes this machine special — and it's also where the failures live. None of these show up on the plain Mars 5 or on older non-tilt printers. Here are 26 issues specific to the Mars 5 Ultra, with causes and step-by-step fixes.

Quick map: what actually breaks on the Mars 5 Ultra

Unit-to-unit variance on this model is wide. Some owners run hundreds of plates without a hiccup; others start fighting the machine on their second bottle of resin. Instead of reading everything, find your symptom below and jump to that section.

  • Prints won't stick, or stay on the film — cold resin, factory films still attached, plate tilt, peel force at the front edge.
  • Self-test messages — "Automatic leveling failed", "Foreign matter detected", mechanical sensor error, X-axis motor status.
  • Stuck on the ELEGOO logo or printing without curing — firmware branch versus mainboard revision.
  • Mechanics — stuttering Z, plate left sitting in the vat, limit switch, jammed tilt assembly, knocking and banding.
  • Screen — cracked protector glass, resin under the panel, LCD connection error.
  • Network and software — slicers can't find the printer, stalled updates, camera and file format limits.

1. Cold resin: knocking, a tug-of-war and failed plates

The single most common cause of failures here isn't electronic at all. The Mars 5 Ultra has no built-in vat heater, and Elegoo's own guidance puts the working range at 25–30 °C. At 17–18 °C ambient the resin thickens, adhesion to the film spikes, and the tilt mechanism ends up in a literal tug-of-war with the build plate: dull thuds on the first layers, then a whining hiss, and the print stays on the bottom of the vat.

  1. Measure the resin, not the room. The printer's screen reports resin temperature; an external heater's thermometer reports air, and the two drift apart noticeably.
  2. Get the resin to 25–30 °C with a small Elegoo heater, a heat band around the vat, or a warm enclosure.
  3. Stir the vat with a silicone spatula before printing — the layer at the bottom stays colder and thicker.
  4. If you can't heat it, raise bottom exposure by 20–30% and slow the lift speed. It compensates for viscosity at the cost of print time.
  5. Don't confuse peel noise with damage: a click on large bottom layers is normal. The red flag is a bang followed by the plate pushing the vat down (see section 10).

2. The first print that goes nowhere: factory films and default settings

A day-one classic: two hours of printing and nothing but a wet build plate. The Mars 5 Ultra ships with shipping film over both the screen's protector glass and the build plate, and plenty of people peel only the first one. The runner-up cause is the stock profile — default exposure assumes ideal conditions and one particular bottle of resin, not yours.

  1. Peel every factory film, including the one on the printing surface of the build plate.
  2. Drain the resin through a filter and confirm the vat floor is clean, with no cured chunks.
  3. Run a tank clean cycle: you should get an even cured slab on the bottom. No slab means the problem is exposure, not settings.
  4. While a print runs, look at the side and rear vents — you should see purple light coming through.
  5. Calibrate exposure with the Cones of Calibration or a validation matrix. Owner-reported numbers for Elegoo ABS-like 3.0 at 0.05 mm: 2.15–3 s normal exposure, 26.5–38 s bottom exposure.

3. "Automatic leveling failed" — usually the spring cable

Z-zero on the Mars 5 Ultra is found by a mechanical contact sensor, and its signal runs up a coiled spring cable along the Z axis. It's a moving part, so it's a wear part. "Automatic leveling failed" rarely shows up once — it comes in waves: a week of clean prints, then every other job dies. Owners have hit it as early as the fifth print on a brand-new machine.

  1. Put the printer on a rigid, level surface away from fume extractors, washing machines and other printers. Elegoo literally suggests testing it on the floor.
  2. Remove and reinstall the build plate: the lock has to close fully and the fixing screws must be tight.
  3. Drain the resin through a filter and scrape any cured buildup off the plate surface.
  4. Power the printer down, pull the rear cover and straighten the spring cable so the coils don't overlap or rub. Inspect the wires — one owner found a broken red conductor inside.
  5. Still failing? Copy Elegoo's Exporting.gcode to the root of a USB stick and "print" it. The printer writes out 100MachineParams.gcode; send that to support along with your resin type and viscosity so they can check the sensor thresholds.

4. "Foreign matter detected" on a spotless vat

"Foreign matter detected" comes from the same mechanical sensor that handles leveling and resin level. That's why it fires on things that aren't debris at all: Elegoo's official write-up lists nine causes, and half of them have nothing to do with actual foreign objects.

  1. Drain the resin through a filter, clean the vat and run a tank clean cycle — then lift out the cured slab.
  2. Check the film against the light and with a gloved finger: dents and lumps cause false triggers.
  3. Pull the plate, dress off any cured buildup or burrs, reinstall it and close the lock fully.
  4. Warm the resin. Elegoo's own document says excessive viscosity causes false detection.
  5. Don't leave the printer in direct sunlight with the hood off — light cures resin in the vat and creates real debris for the sensor to find.
  6. Running a flexible magnetic plate? Set the Z zero properly first (section 11); after manual leveling you can dismiss the warning and print.

5. Build plate screws that adjust nothing: factory-bottomed adjustment screws

One corner of the plate — usually the front right — grips no paper at all, and turning the adjustment screws changes nothing in either direction. The plate isn't warped: on some batches the screws are driven all the way into the standoffs at the factory, so the springs are never preloaded and adjustment simply doesn't do anything. Swapping in a new plate doesn't help; owners have tested that.

  1. Check tilt the way Elegoo documents it: tear an A4 sheet into quarters, lay them on the LCD corners, set bottom exposure to 60 or 90 seconds, remove the vat and start a print.
  2. While the first layer exposes, tug each piece. Correct feel: the paper slides out but won't push back in. A loose corner means tilt.
  3. Back off the screw at the loose corner counter-clockwise with a 2.5 mm key, a little at a time. Never crank screws down hard — you can skew the plate permanently.
  4. If the screws are bottomed out and adjustment does nothing, add a small washer under each of the four plate screws. It's a community fix, but it's the one that restored adjustment for dozens of owners.
  5. Still no luck? Step 3 of the official guide: pull the handle and cover, heat the four cantilever mounting screws with a hair dryer for 2–3 minutes (they're threadlocked) and adjust them with a 4.0 mm key.
  6. For reference, the plate adjustment screws are M4×8. If you strip one, replace it rather than fighting it at every calibration.

6. The spring-loaded plate squashes first layers and skews Z accuracy

The Mars 5 Ultra plate rides on eight spring posts — without them the contact sensor couldn't find zero. The side effect: the springs don't relax instantly after contact, so the first layers cure at the wrong gap. Rafts come out thicker than designed, model bottoms bloat, and anything printed flat on the plate misses its dimensions over the first few millimeters of Z.

  1. Raise the rest time after retract (Rest After Retract in ChiTuBox, Wait time before cure in UVTools) to 20–40 seconds for the first 10–20 layers. Everything above prints at normal pace, so total time barely moves.
  2. Don't put critical dimensions in the first two millimeters — realistic accuracy there is about ±0.3 mm. Lift the part on supports instead.
  3. If you hear crunching between layers early in a print and the raft is welded to the film, drop bottom exposure by 3–5 seconds.
  4. Don't try to chase that accuracy with the plate screws. Past a point you're fighting springs, not tilt.

7. Tilt peel tears models at the front of the plate

On a vertical-lift printer peel force is roughly even across the plate. With a tilting vat it isn't: the front edge travels farther than the back, and a sideways X component gets added on top of the vertical pull. The tell-tale pattern is identical parts printing fine at the back and shearing off supports, snapping at thin sections or delaminating at the front. Files that come with ready-made supports suffer most — those supports were tuned on different hardware.

  1. Put large, heavy models toward the back of the plate and small parts at the front.
  2. Angle models 30–45° instead of laying them flat: smaller cross-section, smaller peel force.
  3. Hollow the model and put drain holes near the plate, otherwise suction stacks on top of peel force.
  4. In ChiTuBox raise support contact diameter to 3.5 mm or more — up to 6 mm covers almost everything and use medium or heavy supports instead of light ones.
  5. Slow the lift speed and increase lift distance — a gentler pull, with time for fresh resin to flow under the part.
  6. Turn off the fast print mode on the printer itself for big, heavy plates.

8. The film counter demands a replacement after two prints

The printer announces the film can be used at most 6000 times and recommends replacing it — on a brand-new sheet after two prints. Don't panic: the counter counts layers, not prints, and it doesn't reset itself when you change the film. Real-world service life reported by heavy users runs from 100,000 to 690,000 layers, and clouding usually starts around 100,000 cycles without being a death sentence.

  1. Reset the counter manually on the self-test page after every film change, or the warning never goes away.
  2. Judge the film by hand: run a gloved finger across it. Dents, lumps or slack mean replace. Light clouding with good tension is still usable.
  3. Never scrape the film with a tool, not even the included plastic scraper — a tank clean cycle lifts stuck cured resin for you.
  4. On the standard (non quick-release) vat, put a roughly 40×40×5 mm foam block under the center of the lower clamping plate when fitting new film; it sets the tension. Tighten the screws diagonally.
  5. Keep spare film on hand: it carries no warranty at all — Elegoo classes it as a consumable.

9. "Resin exceeded maximum limit" with a normally filled vat

Resin level on the Mars 5 Ultra isn't measured by a float or by the camera — it's a strain gauge reading the moment the plate touches the surface. The same sensor drives auto-leveling. Hence the familiar complaints: "resin exceeded maximum limit" with resin filled to the line, false shortage alarms, or the plate pausing for a couple of seconds at the surface before moving on.

  1. Don't fill past the MAX line. Half to two thirds of the vat covers most jobs — you'll run out of build volume before you run out of resin.
  2. Warm the resin: thick resin gives false readings on contact.
  3. Run a self-test — a one-off message usually clears after it.
  4. If the alarms started right after a firmware update, do a factory reset. That cleared both false level alarms and mechanical sensor errors for owners.

10. The plate slams the tilting vat down onto the screen

The nastiest scenario on this machine. Instead of stopping at vat level during the zeroing move, the plate pushes the vat down — with a bang, taking the screen platform with it. The job ends with a foreign matter message, and in bad cases the protector glass cracks. For one owner it started right after fitting a flexible plate and ended with an order for a five-pack of third-party screen protectors.

  2. Reseat the build plate and close its lock completely; a half-closed latch produces the same behavior.
  3. Reset Z zero and run manual leveling (section 5).
  4. Check the firmware version — on the wrong branch the printer believes it has to travel lower than it should.
  5. If a flexible magnetic plate is installed, take it off until the machine behaves again.
  6. Inspect the protector glass before the next print: a cracked protector looks alarming, but the panel underneath is often intact (section 19).

11. Flexible magnetic plate: you can't set Z zero the normal way

The upgrade everyone brings over from FDM breaks calibration here. Zero is found by the contact sensor, there is no Z-offset field in Elegoo SatelLite or ChiTuBox, and a flex plate kit adds height — 2.7 mm in the case of the Wham Bam FBSR. The result is auto-leveling failing with a foreign matter message and manual leveling aborting right after contact.

  1. Get the zero-adjust file for your specific kit — for the Mars 5 Ultra with Wham Bam it's published on Cults3D.
  2. Copy it to the root of a USB stick and "print" it exactly once. Running it twice shifts zero again and auto-leveling stops passing entirely.
  3. Run manual leveling afterwards, or the springs will keep squashing your raft.
  4. If the only goal was easier part removal, it's cheaper to drop bottom exposure by 3–5 seconds and tune the raft in your slicer. Over-cured bottom layers are the real reason parts weld themselves to the plate.

12. Firmware 1.3.9 leaves the printer stuck on the ELEGOO logo

Since December 2025 owners have been reporting that firmware 1.03.09 (shown as V1.3.9 on screen) soft-bricks machines: the printer powers on, displays the ELEGOO splash and goes no further. On some units it turns into a boot loop. The same outcome has been logged after something entirely harmless — clearing local files through ChituManager. The key to the fix is that the firmware branch depends on your mainboard revision.

  1. Format a USB stick as FAT32. Elegoo's recovery procedure calls for one under 16 GB — larger sticks frequently aren't read at this stage.
  2. Unpack the recovery firmware and put ChituUpgrade.bin in the root of the stick. Don't rename it, don't bury it in a folder.
  3. Insert the stick and power up — the flash starts on its own. If it doesn't start, wait for the stick's activity light to stop blinking and press the reset button on the board.
  4. Once it boots, ask support (3dp@elegoo.com) for firmware matching your board revision: 1.3.0 boards have their own branch. Version 1.4.1, delivered over the air, is the one that restored full function for those boards.
  5. Rollback versions owners have used successfully: 1.2.0, 1.2.3 and 1.3.7. Check what you're on under Device Information.

13. After a firmware rollback the UV light stays off and nothing cures

The sequel to the story above: the printer boots, Z moves, the layer counter climbs, time ticks — and half an hour later the plate is empty and nothing in the vat has cured. The exposure test may even pass. Two causes: firmware that doesn't match the board revision, or the wrong power adapter.

  1. Flip the adapter over and read the label: the Mars 5 Ultra needs 24V 3A. Mercury wash-and-cure station adapters output 12V and physically fit the same jack — mixing them up is easier than it sounds.
  2. Measure the output with a multimeter. Anything meaningfully under 24V means a new adapter. No multimeter? Try another 24V unit rated at 3A or more.
  3. If power checks out, flash firmware that matches your board revision (see section 12).
  4. Still no UV on correct firmware? Pull the rear cover (seven screws, 2.0 mm key) and inspect the three constant current board connectors for looseness, discoloration or burn marks. If anything is scorched, stop printing, photograph it and contact support.
  5. Some connectors are hot-glued against shipping vibration. If contact is good, leave the glue alone.

14. OTA updates stall and the printer drops offline

A failure class the plain Mars 5 simply can't have — it has neither Wi-Fi nor over-the-air updates. Symptoms: the printer stops accepting network files, freezes some time after power-on, aborts jobs even from USB, loses the camera, and shows offline in the app. Updates stall halfway; one owner ran five attempts with the router right next to the machine.

  1. Update locally: get firmware for your board revision from support, unpack the .bin to the root of a FAT32 stick and flash from there instead of over the air.
  2. Clear onboard storage from the printer's own screen, not from ChituManager: Print → Local file → long-press a file → Select All → Delete. The alternative is Settings → App Settings → Format the Files → Local Formatting (the printer reboots).
  3. Swap in a fresh USB stick from a known brand — that alone fixed the freezes for several owners, and the bundled stick has died on first contact with a PC more than once.
  4. A factory reset is worth trying if the trouble started right after an update.

15. Wi-Fi connects, but no slicer can find the printer

The printer shows a live Wi-Fi connection while ChituManager and Lychee spin forever trying to add it, leaving USB as the only way to print. Networking on the Mars 5 Ultra is tied to the ChiTuBox ecosystem, and that's also the only supported route to the camera.

  1. Rename the printer to a plain ASCII name with no special characters — odd symbols break discovery.
  2. Confirm the computer and printer are on the same subnet, read the network address from Device Info, and add the device manually by that address.
  3. Know the ecosystem limits: Elegoo SatelLite only exports .goo files without the UVTools plug-in, and camera and time-lapse work only through ChituManager.
  4. If networking never comes up, USB printing is fully functional — you only lose remote monitoring.

16. The AI camera sees less than buyers expect

The camera is the headline difference between the Ultra and the plain Mars 5, and it carries the most inflated expectations. Per Elegoo's own spec sheet the AI does exactly two things: empty build plate detection and warp detection — with an explicit footnote that results vary with environment, models and resin type. Physics adds the rest: it's a 720p camera in the corner of the chamber that simply can't see the whole plate, and reviewers report it missing failures outright.

  1. Treat it as a webcam, not insurance. Reliability comes from settings, supports and a clean vat.
  2. Enable time-lapse before the print starts — afterwards is too late.
  3. Video is only produced for models taller than 50 mm. Small parts won't record, and that isn't a fault.
  4. If the print disappears from frame, the printer may stop on its own — that's the empty-plate detection doing its job.

17. The bundled USB stick, a grayed-out Print button and a fully exposed screen

The stick reads, the file is listed, and the Print button won't respond. Or the printer exposes the entire screen instead of your model and ruins both the print and the resin in the vat. Both come from the same area: the file, its format and the media it's on.

  1. Select the official Mars 5 Ultra profile in your slicer and re-slice: a file sliced for another model simply won't parse.
  2. Use a fresh FAT32 stick of 32 GB or less. NTFS isn't supported.
  3. Never insert the stick before powering on — that's the first entry on Elegoo's official list of reasons the machine won't start.
  4. Minimize third-party format converters: a corrupted file looks exactly like an incompatible one.
  5. If the whole screen was exposed, re-slice the file and run the printer's own exposure test to rule out the panel.

18. "Status of LCD screen connection" and a rectangle instead of your model

This one comes from the mandatory self-test and shows up on brand-new printers after a handful of jobs. The diagnostic tell: the exposure test displays neither the checkerboard nor the text — or lights only a rectangle in the middle of the panel.

  3. Run the exposure test. Checkerboard and text back means it was a contact issue.
  4. If the error survives a panel replacement, it's the ribbon or the mainboard. On a machine still under warranty, push for a unit replacement rather than repairing it yourself.

19. Cracked protector and resin under the panel: uneven exposure

The Mars 5 Ultra LCD is covered by a factory 9H tempered glass protector you can't buy on its own — it only ships attached to a new panel, and what retailers sell are third-party protectors. The classic damage pattern: cracks in the glass or patches of uneven brightness, prints smearing in one zone, while the logo and test patterns display perfectly. That means the panel is alive and the fault is either the glass itself or resin that crept between it, the lens and the panel and cured there.

  1. Work out what's actually damaged: run the exposure test. Pattern and text visible means the panel is fine and the problem is the glass or trapped resin.
  2. Try to lift a spot with a drop of isopropyl alcohol and a rubber squeegee. Never use metal or blades.
  3. If resin cured between the lens and the panel, the lens and panel get replaced together — you won't clean that out without disassembly.
  4. A new panel arrives with the protector already applied. Remove the vat and plate first, wear gloves and keep fingers off the active area.
  5. Mind the warranty terms: the LCD carries 3 months, and resin leaks, protector damage and impacts are excluded.

20. Leaks through the tilt gap and a gummed-up tilt sensor

The tilt mechanism needs clearance between the screen platform and the chassis, and you can't seal it — that's the structural price of the speed. Spilled resin runs straight into the mechanism. A few days after a spill the assembly starts making noise, stutters on its return to home, can't find zero, and the self-test starts complaining about the X axis.

  1. Cut power and wash the tilt area with alcohol while the resin is liquid.
  2. Remove the black plastic optical position sensor at the lower right, clean it thoroughly, dry it and refit it — in most reported cases that alone restores zeroing.
  3. Clean the platform edges and the space under the light shield separately: resin pools there and keeps surfacing for days.
  4. If resin reached the stepper motor, stop using the printer, photograph it and contact support.
  5. Prevention: only lift the plate over the included drip tray, and after every failed print drain the resin through a filter and check the film against the light.

21. "X-Axis Motor Status": the tilt mechanism jams

On this printer the X axis doesn't move a toolhead — it moves the vat. So the failure looks unfamiliar: the mechanism freezes mid-print in the tilted position, homing produces an impact sound, and the self-test reports "X-Axis Motor Status".

  1. Inspect the tilt mechanism fasteners: tighten anything loose, replace anything missing.
  2. Clean resin off the tilt assembly and the optical sensor (section 20) — a gummed sensor throws the same error.
  3. Check the firmware: an incorrectly flashed version or config file is the second cause listed in Elegoo's own write-up.
  4. If it persists, Elegoo's procedure replaces the X limit switch first, then the motor. The front cover comes off with three 2.5 mm screws on top and two 2.0 mm underneath; the touchscreen ribbon has a fixed orientation, so handle it carefully.
  5. A factory reset plus a vat clean sometimes buys a few good prints. That's a delay, not a fix — start the support ticket anyway.

22. Z stutters, or the plate stays in the vat after the print

Either the Z axis doesn't respond or moves in jerks, or the plate finishes a print sitting in the vat and won't lift even from the manual screen controls — only a reboot moves it. The Mars 5 Ultra runs a coiled spring cable up to the cantilever, and that cable is the usual culprit.

  1. Power down, pull the rear cover and straighten the spring cable: no overlapping coils, nothing snagged, nothing rubbing the chassis.
  2. Check the reference gap — about 4.6 mm from the lead screw to the rear cover. More than that means the Z motor screws have loosened; tighten them.
  3. Clean and grease the lead screw and rail with white lithium grease. A dry screw gives jerks and banding.
  4. Inspect the motor connector and the anti-backlash nut: a worn nut adds play and skipped steps.
  5. If resin has reached the stepper motor, stop — that's a support case, not a screwdriver case.
  6. With healthy mechanics, check the firmware: for several owners the "stuck after print" behavior went away with a version change.

23. The plate doesn't stop at the top: Z limit switch failure

During the self-test the plate travels up and grinds into the top stop without stopping — you can hear the motor still pulling. The Z limit switch sits where dust and resin splatter collect, which is why Elegoo gave it a dedicated troubleshooting page.

  1. Cut power and lower the cantilever by hand, turning the lead screw counter-clockwise. Wear gloves — the screw is greased.
  2. Lay the printer on its side and remove the top plate: four screws, 3.0 mm key.
  3. Clean the switch trigger area with a lint-free cloth and 75% ethyl alcohol; dust and resin droplets block actuation.
  4. Tighten the two switch screws with a 2.5 mm key and check the connector. Leave the hot glue on the connector alone if contact is intact.
  5. Test it: during the self-test hold a metal object near the trigger area. If the plate still doesn't stop, the fault is in the cable or the mainboard.

24. The touchscreen reboots during axis moves or exposure

The 4-inch control screen blanks and restarts at exactly the moments of peak load — when Z starts moving or the UV fires. This isn't a UI glitch but a power sag or a bad contact, and Elegoo has a dedicated procedure for the Mars 5 series.

  1. Measure the adapter output with a multimeter: 24V is the target. A sagging adapter gets replaced. To test, connect a different unit and run Tool → Calibration → Confirm.
  2. Remove the rear and right covers and reseat the mainboard ribbons, touchscreen and LCD ribbons included.
  3. Unplug the constant current board cable and repeat the test. If the reboots stop, that board is faulty and needs replacing (part A0M011).
  4. Check the earth wire — a loose ground gives the same symptom.

25. Squeaks, knocking and horizontal banding

On top of the usual vibration sources, a tilting vat adds one of its own: it moves on every single layer. Owners report a metallic squeak during axis travel, knocking at peel, and horizontal banding that wasn't there before. One owner logged twelve consecutive prints with banding even after checking the screen, plate, vat and film.

  1. Grease the lead screw and rail with white lithium grease. Hit the silicone wire that runs along the rail with silicone spray — that wire rubbing the metal is what squeaks.
  2. Move the printer to a rigid desk or the floor, away from extractors, compressors and other printers, and put a damping mat underneath.
  3. Hollow the model and add drain holes near the plate: suction in sealed cavities produces both banding and shifts.
  4. Slow the lift speed to soften the peel jerk.
  5. Loud knocking on large bottom layers is a reason to cut their exposure, not to rebuild the mechanics.

26. The lid stops seating, and there's nowhere to park the plate

Two small annoyances that show up months in. The Mars 5 Ultra hood isn't hinged — it lifts off completely and gets handled every print, so the seating surfaces wear. Around the six-month mark owners report the lid going on with force and popping straight back off. The second one: there's no provision anywhere for parking the build plate while resin drips off it.

  1. Clean the seating grooves of resin film and dust first — often that's all it takes.
  2. If the fit is genuinely worn, add a thin strip of soft weatherstrip around the perimeter to restore it.
  3. Don't print with the hood off: it contains the smell and keeps light out of the vat, and stray light cures resin right on the film.
  4. A drip stand for the plate prints in a couple of hours — plenty of designs exist in the open model libraries. Until then, use the included drip tray.
