Anycubic Photon Mono 4 Problems: USB Won't Read, Dark Screen, Failed Prints
Real Anycubic Photon Mono 4 issues: .pm4n files won't read off USB, dark exposure screen, prints lifting in the center, LCD lifespan and the Z limit switch. Step-by-step fixes and an error-message reference.
The Anycubic Photon Mono 4 is a budget MSLA resin printer from September 2024 with a 7-inch 10K mono LCD (9024×5120, 17 µm pixels), a 153×87×165 mm build area and a LighTurbo parallel-LED light source (not COB). It prints reliably, but the machine has a narrow set of quirks of its own: fussy file loading from USB, a dark exposure screen on older firmware, prints lifting in the center of the plate and a limited LCD lifespan. This is a Photon Mono 4-specific list — only real problems and step-by-step fixes, verified against the official Anycubic Wiki and owner reports.
Files won't load from USB: 'File format error' and 'Failed to open file'
The most common beginner complaint: the slice is on the USB stick, but the printer throws 'File format error!' or 'Failed to open file!'. The Photon Mono 4 only understands its own .pm4n slice format and is picky about the drive itself: it won't read STL/OBJ models directly, chokes on special characters and long names, ignores files inside folders and can't read USB drives of 32 GB or larger. - In your slicer, pick the Anycubic Photon Mono 4 machine and re-slice — a valid slice has the .pm4n extension. STL and OBJ won't print directly.
- Name the file in plain English, up to 15 characters, no spaces or special characters, and put it in the root of the drive (not in a folder).
- Format the drive as FAT32 with a 4096-byte allocation unit, capacity under 32 GB. Drives of 32 GB or larger aren't recognized.
- Save the slice to your desktop first, then copy it to the USB stick — it corrupts less often that way.
- Always eject the drive safely and wait for the write to finish — pulling it early corrupts the file and triggers 'Failed to open file!'.
Printer stops seeing the USB after a film-replacement prompt (counter glitch)
A nastier scenario: after a prompt to replace the FEP film, the printer suddenly refuses to see the USB drive or any files, and printing won't start. In the comments on Anycubic's official page, owners figured out the cause: the film-life counter (and the layer counter) hits its maximum and blocks the start. One owner put it plainly: 'Seems to be a counter glitch when it hits max — I reset the layer counter and the film counter and it worked again.' An Anycubic rep confirmed the FEP has a limited service life.
- In the menu, reset the film counter and the layer counter.
- Unplug the printer for a few hours, then power it back on — sometimes it needs a long power-off, not a quick restart.
- If the drive still won't read, replace the FEP with a fresh one (its life really is used up) and have Anycubic support check the USB adapter board.
Dark exposure screen, vertical lines and moiré on the model
On some units the exposure screen looks too dark or fully black, the model surface shows vertical lines and moiré, and sometimes only part of the area lights up after the RERF test. These are early firmware and FPGA bugs, and a firmware update fixes them. Per Anycubic's firmware update log: V0.0.038 'initializes the LCD driver twice' and clears the dark screen, while FPGA 0046 removes the vertical lines, moiré and the partial exposure after RERF (a bug in FPGA 0035). One owner confirmed his black exposure screen went away after a firmware update.
- Update to the latest firmware (V0.0.038, boot 039/044 at launch) — it fixes the dark and black exposure screen. Only download files from the official Anycubic firmware page.
- Update the FPGA to 0046 — it removes vertical lines, moiré and the partial exposure after RERF. After the FPGA update, restart the printer manually (the FPGA version isn't shown on screen — just wait for the 'complete' message).
- Verify exposure: Tools → Exposure, lay an A4 sheet on the screen and run all test shapes — the exposure should be even, with no dark zones.
The ~2000-hour LCD lifespan and its main killer — resin leaks
The mono exposure LCD is a consumable rated for about 2000 hours of printing. But more often it dies early not from wear but from a leak: if the FEP tears or gets punctured, resin seeps underneath, cures right on the screen under UV and burns out the pixels. In the comments on Anycubic's official LCD replacement guide, an owner of two units bought in May 2025 complained that both lost screen pixels after only ~20 prints. Anycubic's LCD warranty is 6 months; the whole machine is covered for 1 year.
- Apply a screen protector film and watch the FEP — replace the film at the first cuts, punctures or cloudiness.
- If resin spills, clean the vat and glass immediately and don't print with a dirty screen. If resin gets under the glass, disassemble the base, clean it and run an exposure test.
- If pixels are already dead, replace the LCD per the official guide: raise the arm (Tools → Move Z, 10 mm step), remove the base, swap the tempered glass and screen, then re-level the plate after reassembly.
Horizontal lines at a fixed height — Z axis and lead screw
If your model shows repeating horizontal bands, especially at the same height, it's usually the Z axis and the release film. Anycubic's official poor print quality page says to tweak the lift parameters first, then check the mechanics. A too-abrupt peel, a loose FEP and a dry or dirty lead screw all cause exactly this kind of banding.
- Increase the lift distance a little and lower the lift and retract speed — the peel becomes gentler.
- If the lines stay at the same height after long use, wipe the lead screw and linear rails with a lint-free cloth. No alcohol or water — they rust and seize the screw. Then apply lubricant and cycle the axis up and down to spread it.

Prints detaching in the center of the plate
A classic Mono 4 owner complaint: the model peels off the plate in the center while the edges still hold. And it fails even after a new FEP, fresh resin and re-leveling. In an owners' thread on Facebook they narrowed it down: usually it's under-exposed bottom layers and cold resin — at a low room temperature the resin doesn't grip the plate well. 'Cold resin' is the most common answer from veterans.
- Raise the bottom exposure and the number of bottom layers — that's the first thing to try when prints detach in the center.
- Warm the resin and the room to 25–30 °C. Cold resin is the main cause of poor adhesion in winter.

The light body slides on the desk, and the plate is rigid
Two small but annoying mechanical quirks reviewers keep pointing out. First: the body is light and the feet are slippery — when you tighten the build-plate bolt, the printer slides and even twists on the desk. Second: the stock plate is solid and non-flexible, so peeling finished prints off it is harder than off a flexible magnetic plate.
- Put the printer on a silicone or rubber mat — the body stops moving when you tighten the plate bolt.
- Remove prints at an angle with a stiff scraper, prying from the edge. Work carefully so you don't scratch the plate or bend the model.
- If peeling off the solid plate is really awkward, add an aftermarket flexible magnetic plate — prints pop off with a simple flex. Re-calibrate the Z zero after installing it.
Photon Workshop slicer: the file picker vanishes, weak supports
The Mono 4 prints great, but the stock Photon Workshop slicer lets it down. Fabbaloo's reviewers caught an annoying bug: when you import a model, the file picker box appears and instantly disappears — on both Windows and Mac. On top of that, auto-support generation is unreliable and needs a manual check.
- Bug workaround: drag the model file straight into the program window (drag-and-drop) instead of opening the file dialog.
- Always check the auto-supports by hand before slicing — add supports under overhangs and small details.
- As an alternative, slice in Lychee or Chitubox with a Photon Mono 4 profile — supports and hollowing are easier there.
Z axis won't stop at home — the limit switch
A rarer but nasty failure: when homing, the Z axis doesn't stop and the arm keeps travelling down. That means the limit switch — the Z-axis photoelectric sensor — isn't triggering. Anycubic has a dedicated Z limit switch guide for it.
- Check the sensor: power on the printer and block the photoelectric switch by hand with an Allen key — on a working sensor the motor stops, lifts slightly and stops again.
- If there's no reaction, reseat the switch harness at the sensor and at the mainboard (remove the board cover).
- If that doesn't help, replace the limit switch per the official guide.
Odds and ends: resin under the glass, misaligned touchscreen, whirring at start
A few small things that show up in the comments on Anycubic's official FAQ are worth keeping in mind:
- Bubbles or resin under the screen glass from an overflow: disassemble the base, clean the glass and screen, run an exposure test. If the exposure is uneven, the screen needs replacing.
- The touchscreen mis-registers (one owner reported about half an inch off): remove and reinstall the control screen.
- A loud whirring from inside at print start: usually the fan. Record a video with sound and open a support ticket — the fan is typically replaced under warranty.
