Prints fail in the middle of the plate — it isn't flat

The most common M7 complaint looks like this: models stick perfectly along the edges and at the back of the plate, but toward the center the supports thin out, snap off, or the whole part stays lying on the film. Re-leveling doesn't help — and that's the key clue. On r/resinprinting the diagnosis is blunt: a dished build plate is “very common with the M7 line”.

Two causes stack up here. First, plate flatness varies: Anycubic itself calls a deviation of up to 0.1 mm normal, but some units are visibly worse. Second, strain-gauge auto-leveling gives you no way to add a long separate rest before exposing the bottom layers, so wherever the plate dips, those layers simply don't get enough energy. Tellingly, even TechRadar's review of the bigger M7 Pro notes that after roughly 4 kg of resin they had to run the leveling routine by hand anyway, despite the “no-levelling” marketing.

  1. Check flatness: stand a metal ruler on edge across the removed plate and shine a flashlight from behind. A visible gap, or a sheet of paper sliding under, means the plate is dished — settings can only partly compensate.
  2. Raise bottom exposure from the factory 25 s to 45 s and increase bottom layer count from 3 to 8–10.
  3. Add 0.3 s to normal exposure — M7 owners report 1.4 → 1.7 s doing the job.
  4. Increase lift distance and reduce lift and retract speeds: a gentler peel is kinder to under-cured center layers.
  5. Run the manual calibration: remove the vat, loosen the four plate screws, lower the plate 1.5–1.8 mm onto a sheet of paper, press down and tighten. Then check paper drag on the left and right — it should feel identical.
  6. If the ruler test shows a real dip, claim a warranty plate replacement. Sanding it flat on a genuinely flat surface works but destroys the laser texture and your warranty.

'Platform not installed' and CODE 313 — it all hangs on one strain gauge

The printer refuses to start and claims the platform isn't installed while it clearly is. Or a strain gauge fault window with CODE 313 pops up at boot. Or the machine keeps asking you to add resin to a full vat. All three symptoms point at one part: on the M7, leveling, resin level sensing and print-detachment detection all run off a single strain gauge in the Z arm.

  1. Open Advanced → Equipment self-test → Force Detection. The icon must be green. If it isn't, the gauge or its harness is the problem.
  2. Power the printer off and unplug it. Remove the plate and vat, raise the Z arm out of the way.
  3. Pull the silicone cover off the Z arm, tilt the printer and reseat the strain gauge connector. Peel-force vibration works it loose over time — this is the single most common cause.
  4. Power back on and see whether the error window is gone.
  5. If it isn't, run the mechanical calibration. Settings → System → About → Detailed information, then tap the device name ten times in a row to open the service menu. Pick Mechanical Calibration, remove the clean plate and tap “Removed”, put it back and tap “Installed”.
  6. Repeat the calibration two or three times — Anycubic's own docs recommend it for stable readings.
  7. Still failing? Replace the strain gauge board. It comes out with an S2.5 hex key once every wire is disconnected.

The ACF film: you pay for speed with sharpness

A 14K screen with 16.8 × 24.8 µm pixels promises microscopic detail, yet prints come out slightly softer than you'd expect, with faint vertical trails visible on smooth surfaces under raking light. The culprit is the stock ACF film: its matte face is what makes the layer release so easily — that's where the speed comes from — but it also scatters UV light more than clear FEP or nFEP. Owners who shot macro comparisons keep landing on the same conclusion: some of that 14K detail is eaten by the film.

This isn't a defect, it's a deliberate design trade-off — but you do get a choice. Keep the service life in mind too: for the M7 Pro, Anycubic quotes 45,000 layers per film against roughly 30,000 for the older FEP on the Photon Mono M5s. The base M7 product page lists no figure at all.

  • Want maximum detail? Fit nFEP or PFA instead of ACF and re-dial your exposure: more light reaches the resin through clear film, so the old numbers will over-cure.
  • Staying on ACF? Lower your lift speed — a gentler peel partly offsets the scattering.
  • Film swap: first 4 diagonal screws with an S2.5 key plus 18 S2.0 screws on the vat, then 22 S2.0 screws on the steel ring. It's tedious, but the ring is reusable.
  • Install matte side toward the light source, glossy side (the one with the yellow sticker) toward the resin. Flip it and you get both blur and poor release.
  • Tension the film before you torque the screws: a wrinkle in the film will absolutely show up on the model.
  • Trim the excess along the ring afterwards and inspect the film against a light: any speck or bump means doing it again.

'Residue detected' and 'Add resin' on a clean, full vat

Both messages come from the same mechanical sensor, and both love false positives. “Residue” is reported when the printer feels force on the plate before it reaches the Z limit switch — meaning something is down there, either a cured skin of resin or a bump on the film. “Add resin” follows a formula: the vat holds less than 100 ml plus the volume of the current file.

  1. Glove up and sweep the vat floor with a plastic scraper — a metal one scratches the film. Even a thin cured skin reads as residue.
  2. Inspect the film against a light. Found a bump? Replace the film now, not later.
  3. Top up the resin without going past the MAX line and hit “Retest” so the printer measures again.
  4. If the message repeats on an obviously clean vat, tap “Ignore”, open “Smart Detection” on the print screen and check the “Resin Detection” and “Leveling Detection” statuses.
  5. Both showing a fault? Go back to the mechanical calibration from the strain gauge section above.
  6. Mind the edge case: if a file needs more than 1000 ml — more than the vat holds — the printer won't warn you at all. Check the volume in your slicer and top up during a pause.

150 mm/h only happens with high-speed resin in fast mode

That 150 mm/h on the box isn't a general print speed. Anycubic's own spec table says something different: max ≤90 mm/h, standard resin at 0.1 mm ≤90 mm/h, and only the company's high-speed resin at the same layer height reaches ≤150 mm/h. A footnote on the product page adds that the number was measured in Anycubic's lab using its own high-speed resin. Tom's Hardware called that methodology “a little cheaty”, and an independent measurement on the larger M7 Max landed at 63 mm/h with standard resin and 86 mm/h with high-speed.

The practical consequence matters more than the marketing: the M7 ships with two distinct parameter sets and it's easy to mix them up. Standard mode prints at 0.05 mm with a slow lift; fast mode prints at 0.1 mm lifting at 15 mm/s. For the “high-speed resin in standard mode” combination Anycubic publishes nothing at all — that cell in the table is just a dash.

  • Decide before you slice: detail means standard mode at 0.05 mm, speed means fast mode at 0.1 mm. Mixing values from the two sets makes no sense.
  • Don't try to run high-speed resin on the standard profile — there are no official numbers for that pairing, so you're dialing it in from scratch with test prints.
  • The factory values only hold at factory light power. If you changed the light energy in the service menu, recalculate exposure from scratch.
  • A real-world data point: on black Sunlu Standard the factory preset lost 4 of 8 parts, and 60 s bottom with 3 s normal exposure fixed it.
  • Remember the flip side of speed: high-speed resin produces more brittle parts and supports, so they snap more easily during removal.

No heated vat: a cold room breaks your prints

In winter, or in an unheated workshop, the same files with the same resin suddenly start detaching, with mushy supports and slimy walls. The reason is simple: the base M7 has neither a heated vat nor an auto-fill unit. That's the fundamental split from the M7 Pro and M7 Max — and it's why the documentation's advice to “turn on heating in the smart vat settings” is impossible to follow on an M7. There is no such button.

  • Heat the room, not the printer: 22–25 °C solves the problem completely and costs nothing.
  • Warm the resin bottle in a water bath to 25–30 °C before pouring, and shake it thoroughly.
  • After topping up with cold resin, let it settle in the vat for 10–15 minutes before starting.
  • Don't wrap the chassis in DIY heating pads. There's a COB module inside with its own cooling, and overheating it costs more than a failed print.

The file won't load: USB drive, file name and the .pm7 format

The printer doesn't see the drive, doesn't list the file, or throws a slice parsing error with CODE 300. The M7's restrictions are strict and printed nowhere on the machine, and the biggest trap is inside the product line itself: a file sliced for the M7 Pro will not open on a base M7, because they use different slice formats.

  1. Format the drive as FAT32 with a 4096-byte allocation unit. Capacity must be under 32 GB — anything 32 GB or larger simply isn't read.
  2. Put the file in the root of the drive. The printer cannot see files inside folders.
  3. Name files in plain Latin characters, 15 characters max, no special symbols.
  4. In the slicer, select Anycubic Photon Mono M7 — not the M7 Pro, not the M5s Pro. Picking the wrong model is exactly what CODE 300 means: the slice was saved in another machine's format.
  5. Verify layer height, pixel size and maximum print size in the profile: a mismatch with the firmware also triggers CODE 300.
  6. Save the slice to your computer first, then copy it to the drive, and always eject safely — an interrupted write produces a corrupt file.

UVtools and .pm7: where third-party tools still stumble

If you post-process slices in UVtools — fixing islands, adding compensation, sanity-checking layers — you should know how this format behaves. Anycubic keeps it closed, UVtools support was reverse-engineered, and it periodically falls behind the latest Photon Workshop release. The symptom: after saving in UVtools, either the slicer or the printer declares the file corrupt, and individual layers look garbled in the preview.

  • Update UVtools to at least v6.1.0 (27 June 2026), which fixed re-opening saved Anycubic files.
  • Reopen the saved file and scrub through the layers before printing: the bug where .pm7 layer images decode incorrectly has been open since December 2024 and is still not closed.
  • If you don't actually need UVtools edits, slice straight in Photon Workshop and skip converters entirely.
  • M7 Max owners on PrusaSlicer should check the format identifier in the profile: it shipped as PM5M instead of PM7M, which silently broke conversion.
  • Keep the original file until the print succeeds. A corrupted slice can't be repaired, only re-sliced.

Wi-Fi, the cloud and network printing that drops out

The M7's networking has three separate weak spots. First, the module is 2.4 GHz only — if your router broadcasts 5 GHz exclusively, the printer will never see the network. Second, the server region defaults to China, and the cloud and app won't work until you switch it to Global. Third, and most annoying, sending a file over the network from Photon Workshop fails roughly half the time, while the Lychee developers state plainly that Anycubic hasn't given them the information needed to implement Wi-Fi printing — so third-party slicers can't do it at all.

First thing to do with a new M7 outside China: Network → Server location → Global
  1. Settings → Network → Server location: switch China to Global and wait for the cloud icon in the corner.
  2. Connect to a 2.4 GHz network using WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK. Enable a separate 2.4 GHz SSID on the router if needed.
  3. Still nothing? Share a hotspot from your phone. That separates a router problem from a printer problem in under a minute.
  4. No networks listed at all: reboot, then replace the antenna. A CODE 314 window means the Wi-Fi module failed its self-test.
  5. Network printing broke after a slicer update? Roll Photon Workshop back — M7 owners point to 3.6.5 as a working version.
  6. Run long, important prints from the USB drive. On this machine that's still the most reliable path.

Power blinks, print gone: there's no resume

This isn't a bug, it's an honestly documented limitation: the base M7's spec sheet lists resume after power loss as “not supported”. Lose mains power eight hours into a print and you start over. That hurts more in resin than in FDM: layers are thin, prints are long, and an under-cured seam from a manual restart will delaminate anyway.

  • Get a UPS. The printer draws 135 W, so an inexpensive line-interactive unit rides through a typical blink comfortably.
  • Don't share an outlet with a kettle, heater or vacuum — the voltage sag does the same damage as an outage.
  • On an unreliable grid, split large models into parts and print them in sequence.
  • After an unexpected shutdown, check leveling: the plate may have been sitting loaded at the bottom.

Banding at the same height — the Z lead screw

After a few dozen hours of printing, repeating horizontal bands start appearing on models, often at the exact same height. M7 Pro owners traced the mechanism on the 3DToday forum, and the assembly is shared across the line: in a steel lead screw and brass nut pairing, the softer nut wears first. The wear debris collects in the grease — the giveaway is a black film on the cloth when you wipe the screw — and Z motion stops being uniform. Plain old dried-out grease adds to it.

  1. Remove the plate and vat, and lay a sheet of A4 paper on the exposure screen so nothing falls onto it.
  2. Home the axis: “Move Z” → “Z axis zero point”.
  3. Wrap the screw in a lint-free cloth and drive the axis up in 50 mm steps until the over-travel prompt, then back down to zero. Clean in both directions.
  4. Look at the cloth. A black film means the screw and nut are wearing each other, not just dirt.
  5. Apply a small amount of thick grease above and below the anti-backlash assembly, then cycle the axis so it spreads evenly.
  6. Check the anti-backlash assembly screws for tightness: a loose one causes both banding and whining.
  7. Repeat roughly every three months. If the black film returns within a couple of weeks, claim a warranty replacement — cleaning only delays the inevitable.

Loud fans, a laggy touchscreen and a confusing translation

Three annoyances that won't ruin a print but will wear on you. Noise: the COB module runs hotter than the older UV arrays and needs two fans on the light board, and reviewers and buyers alike regularly call the M7 loud. The touchscreen often needs a second tap, and owners note this has followed Anycubic since the original Photon Mono. And the localization is inconsistent — the same resin vat gets three different names across three menus in some languages.

  • Don't put the printer on a thin desktop or shelf: half the audible hum is furniture resonance rather than the fans themselves.
  • Never block the ventilation slots in the base. Cooking the COB module costs far more than the noise.
  • If the tone changes suddenly or you hear grinding, check the light board fans. They're a standard replacement part; the teardown needs S2.0, S2.5 and S3.0 hex keys.
  • Tap the touchscreen precisely and without a protective film stuck over it, and keep the firmware current.
  • If the translation confuses you, switch the interface to English: every manual and knowledge base article is written against the English menu names.

Exposure glitches and the second, separate FPGA firmware

Almost nobody knows this: the M7 has two updatable components. The main firmware handles machine logic, while a separate FPGA firmware drives the image feed to the exposure screen. On the official printer page that FPGA file sits on its own with an explicit hint: if exposure switching behaves abnormally during printing, update that one. The symptoms match — layers come out at uneven density, part of the area is under-cured, the on-screen image stutters.

  1. Check your current build: System → Versions.
  2. Download the firmware from the official Photon Mono M7 page, unzip it and drop the file in the root of a FAT32 drive. Do not rename it.
  3. Run Versions → Local upgrade → OK. The printer updates and reboots by itself.
  4. Getting “No upgrade file found”? Confirm the file is in the root with its original name, and try another drive.
  5. If the fault is specifically in exposure, download the FPGA firmware file from the same page and flash that too.
  6. Over-the-air updates only work with the cloud connected. No cloud means USB only.

Reviews you shouldn't trust: spotting invented specs

There's one more problem M7 owners face: misinformation. The major outlets mostly tested the M7 Pro and M7 Max, and the “base M7 review” niche got filled by templated affiliate sites. Their specs agree neither with each other nor with the official page: you'll find a 400 ml vat instead of 1000 ml, 9.5 kg instead of 12 kg, a 13320 × 7560 screen instead of 13312 × 5120, and even a heated chamber and built-in camera attributed to the M7.

  • Cross-check any spec against the official product page and the Anycubic knowledge base — it takes a minute.
  • Red flags for a base M7: “heated vat”, “automatic resin filling”, “resume after power loss”, “built-in camera”. It has none of those.
  • Reference numbers: vat up to 1000 ml, weight 12 kg, screen 13312 × 5120, 135 W. Anything else means the author never touched the machine.
  • Even respectable outlets repeat a press-kit typo — 13320 × 5120 instead of 13312 × 5120. Harmless in itself, but it shows the numbers get copied rather than checked.
  • Always confirm which model was tested: the auto-fill pump and the air purifier fighting over the same port, the wobbly hood and heating thick resin all describe the M7 Pro and M7 Max, not the base M7.

Photon Mono M7 error message reference

Anycubic resin printers use their own numbering — codes 300 through 314, not the five-digit codes familiar from the Kobra FDM line. Several pages in the knowledge base are still marked “Stay tuned”, meaning even the manufacturer hasn't documented them. Codes 307 through 312 relate to the heated vat and the auto-fill unit, neither of which exists on a base M7, so they shouldn't appear at all.
