Description
The QIDI X-Maker is an enclosed entry-level FDM printer that QIDI Technology released in 2019 at around $459. It was aimed at homes and education: it ships fully assembled, the enclosure keeps it safe around kids, and it's easy to learn. The model is now discontinued, but it's still worth a look as an affordable enclosed printer for PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU.
The build volume is 170x150x160 mm. It runs Cartesian kinematics on an aluminum frame inside a closed enclosure. A direct drive extruder with a 0.4 mm nozzle takes 1.75 mm filament and handles flexible TPU with no Bowden tube. The nozzle reaches 250 °C, the heated bed goes up to 120 °C, layer height runs 0.05-0.4 mm, and print speed tops out at 150 mm/s. You also get auto bed leveling, power loss recovery, a coated magnetic flexible plate, a built-in 1080p camera with Wi-Fi, LED lighting, dual-fan air filtration, and a 3.5-inch touchscreen.
Advantages
- Ready out of the box — the printer arrives assembled, and reviewers note that setup and the first print take very little time even for beginners
- Quiet operation — the enclosure and quality fans make the X-Maker noticeably quieter than most open printers in its class, so you can keep it in a living space
- Enclosed chamber — the case traps heat and odors, helps print ABS without warping, and is safer around kids, which schools and libraries appreciate
- Built-in 1080p camera and Wi-Fi — you can watch the print from your phone through the iCookyCam app without standing next to the printer
- Handy removable plate — the magnetic flexible build plate lets you pop parts off by flexing it, with no scraper and no risk of damaging the print
- Solid value — auto leveling, print resume, and a camera in an affordable enclosed printer built for home and education
Disadvantages
- Small build volume — 170x150x160 mm is tight for larger models, and rivals at this price offer noticeably more space
- Hard to source parts — the model is discontinued, so finding original consumables and spares is difficult
- Small community and limited upgrade path — few ready-made mods and little discussion compared to mainstream printers
- Heavy for its size — at 21.9 kg it's awkward to move and reposition for such a small build area
The QIDI X-Maker suits beginners, families with kids, schools, and small workshops who want a simple enclosed, ready-to-go printer for PLA, PETG, and small ABS and TPU parts. It isn't a machine for large or fast jobs, but a calm home and classroom printer.
Bottom line: the X-Maker is a quiet, safe enclosed printer with a camera and auto leveling at an accessible price. Its strength is simplicity and being ready to print; its weak spots are the small build volume and the trouble sourcing parts now that it's discontinued.
