Description

The Flashforge AD5X is a budget multi-color FDM printer based on the Adventurer 5M platform with CoreXY kinematics. It targets users who need multi-color printing up to 4 colors without buying expensive equipment. The build volume is 220×220×220 mm, the nozzle heats up to 300 °C, allowing work with PLA, PETG, ASA and even TPU 95A.

The main feature of the AD5X is the IFS (Integrated Filament Switching) system for automatic filament changes during multi-color printing. The printer uses a direct-drive extruder, reaches print speeds up to 300 mm/s and travel speeds up to 600 mm/s with acceleration up to 20,000 mm/s². The Speed Benchy prints in approximately 16 minutes. Automatic bed leveling, filament sensor, Wi-Fi and a 4.3-inch touchscreen are included.

Advantages

  • 4-color printing via IFS system works reliably and requires no complex setup
  • TPU 95A support is rare for multi-color printers in this price range
  • Travel speed up to 600 mm/s, Speed Benchy prints in 16 minutes
  • Ready to use out of the box, initial setup takes about 20 minutes
  • Print accuracy of 0.02 mm per 100 mm according to reviewer tests
  • Affordable price: from $267 on AliExpress, $399 on the official website

Disadvantages

  • Significant filament waste during color changes: up to 1.75 kg of purge waste for a 150 g model in worst case
  • Orca-Flashforge slicer is unstable: users report crashes and missing purge consumption display
  • Open frame design results in 65-80 dB noise level and limits material options
  • No lighting or camera in the base kit, unresponsive touchscreen with small font

The Flashforge AD5X suits those who want to try multi-color 3D printing without a large investment. The printer is built on the proven Adventurer 5M platform, and the manufacturer offers an optional upgrade system including an enclosed chamber.

At a price starting from $267, the AD5X is one of the most affordable solutions for 4-color printing. Keep in mind the purge costs during frequent color changes and the open frame limitations, but for PLA and PETG this printer handles its task well.
