Description

The Anycubic Photon S is a desktop MSLA resin 3D printer, an upgraded version of the popular 2019 Photon. It's one of the most affordable ways into resin printing: a good fit for beginners, modelers, miniature painters and jewelry designers who need fine detail.

The build volume is 115×65×165 mm, driven by a 5.5" 2K LCD with 2560×1440 resolution and a 47 µm pixel size. The 405 nm UV source runs at 50 W, with print speeds around 20 mm/h. Key improvements over the original Photon: a matrix UV module with a focusing lens on every diode (less stray curing), a dual Z-axis on two linear rails for stability, and a dual activated-carbon air-filtration system to cut resin odor. Printing runs offline from a USB drive via the touchscreen.

Pros

  • Fine detail: a 47 µm pixel size and 1.25 µm Z accuracy deliver crisp miniatures and small models
  • Dual Z-axis on two linear rails — stable platform motion and smoother walls
  • Matrix UV module with a focusing lens on every diode reduces stray curing and boosts accuracy
  • Dual activated-carbon air filtration noticeably reduces resin odor
  • Offline printing from USB via the touchscreen — no computer required
  • Low price and a mature consumables ecosystem — an inexpensive entry into resin printing

Cons

  • Small 115×65×165 mm build volume — large models have to be split into parts
  • Resin printing is messy and needs post-processing: IPA washing and final curing
  • USB-only with the proprietary Photon Workshop slicer — no Wi-Fi or network control
  • Discontinued model — the LCD screen and FEP film will need replacing over time

The Photon S fits anyone taking their first steps in resin printing who values detail: tabletop miniatures, figurines, jewelry master models and small prototypes. It's a budget tool for home and a small workshop, though it demands care.

Bottom line: a proven, budget MSLA printer with excellent detail for the price, in exchange for a small build volume and mandatory post-processing.
