The Anycubic Photon M3 is a 2022 resin printer with a 7.6-inch 4096×2560 monochrome LCD, a 163×102×180 mm build area and a $299 launch price. It's discontinued, and in 2026 almost every problem it has comes down to parts rather than printing: Anycubic no longer lists a masking LCD, a resin vat or a release film for the base M3.

Everything below applies to the base M3 specifically, not to its bigger siblings Plus, Max and Premium — those use different panels, different file formats and different spare parts. Generic resin problems (prints sticking to the film, supports, elephant's foot, washing and curing) live in separate guides, linked at the end.

The release film ships as a sealed frame cartridge — and it's discontinued

The single most discussed M3 topic isn't print quality, it's film. On most resin printers the vat frame comes apart: unscrew it, stretch a new sheet, put it back. On the base M3 the film is heat-sealed between the two halves of the frame, and those halves don't separate. The factory part isn't a sheet, it's the whole module: part number S020096, "FEP film with frame assembly, 210.6×148 mm, 2 pcs". Anycubic stopped making it — the FEP Film product on their own store has no Photon M3 option at all, only M3 Plus, the Mono X series, Mono 2, Mono 4 and Mono 4 Ultra.

Anycubic rates FEP at roughly 10,000 layers (the pricier nFEP and ACF films get about 30,000). One M3 Plus owner who tracked consumption got 6–7 litres of resin out of a single sheet — the vat, film and screen stack is the same on the base M3. Either way, you will be replacing it, more than once.

  1. Print a frame that takes plain sheet FEP. Two solid designs exist: ANYCUBIC M3 FEP FRAME (you print two copies of the same STL — the recesses are mirrored so the halves nest into each other) and FEP Frame for Photon M3, which uses M3×4 mm screws.
  2. Have the same STL cut in metal by a local CNC shop — the route people take when they don't want printed plastic sitting in resin.
  3. Re-stretch a sheet onto the stock frame by hand. Owners have done it, but it's a one-shot job with no margin for error: the frame was never meant to open.
  4. Buy a pre-cut sheet. Third-party sheets sized for the M3 are still sold and cheap — packs of three to five are easy to find on AliExpress — the easiest path if you already have a frame.

The vat can't be bought, and no other vat fits

The second big loss is the vat. Crack it, chip it or warp it and the machine is done. Part number S020086 is marked discontinued with zero stock at Anycubic resellers, and the Resin Vat product on the official store only lists M3 Plus and M3 Max — both sold out as well.

Dropping in an Elegoo or Photon Mono X vat doesn't work, despite how often that gets suggested. The M3 vat is clamped by two bolts that pass straight through its body into the printer base — other machines mount differently, and the Mono X vat is roughly a quarter wider on top of that. The only realistic source is a donor: listings for "printer with a dead screen" usually come with an intact vat.

  • Never pour resin out over the back wall — it runs under the vat and into the threads.
  • Clean with a plastic scraper and a soft cloth only; keep metal well away.
  • Don't crank the mounting bolts down hard: over-torquing twists the vat and ruins how the film sits.
  • Wipe it with isopropyl alcohol but don't soak it — the perimeter seal ages faster if you do.

Resin kills the masking LCD without leaving a single visible mark

The symptom is distinctive: nothing sticks to the build plate any more, and an exposure test lights up as a solid white field or covers only half the screen. The panel itself looks perfectly fine — no cracks, no stains. What happened is that resin which seeped under the vat dissolved the conductive bond between the panel and its ribbon cable. The screen dies quietly, with no visible damage to point at.

Before you order a panel, run Anycubic's own check. It takes five minutes and rules out half the false alarms.

  1. Remove the vat and the build plate, wipe the screen dry.
  2. Lay a sheet of A4 paper directly on the LCD.
  3. Run the printer's built-in exposure test with a rectangle.
  4. Compare: if the lit shape on the paper matches the shape you selected, the panel and the LEDs are alive and the fault is elsewhere (exposure, film, levelling).
  5. If the image is partial, flickering or absent, reseat the LCD ribbon connector first — only then order a panel.

The monochrome panel is rated for 2000 print hours, and Anycubic's maintenance guide gives a 500–2000 range. Dropping UV power to 70–80 % extends that noticeably without hurting detail, because the panel runs cooler. One more data point from the used market: the screen degrades from sitting idle too, not just from printing. There are listings where the LCD stopped lighting parts of the field after a long period switched off.

Replacement is the only fix. You need a 7.6-inch 4K panel with a 1.8 mm glass backing plate. Anycubic never published the panel's own model number, so you're matching on the description "7.6 inch 4K mono LCD for Photon M3". Chitu Systems lists it at $59.99, down from $98.99, but stock swings — their machine-readable feed frequently marks it unavailable and the page carries a "notify me" button instead of a buy button.

The screen protector: one spare for the life of the machine, and it's a pain to fit

The screen protector is the only thing standing between leaked resin and a panel that costs a large fraction of the printer. Anycubic applies one at the factory and puts a single spare in the box. Their official 5-pack for the M3 is $17 and sold out, but third-party packs are cheap and plentiful.

Fitting it is its own ordeal. The manual never says at which step of unboxing the protector goes on, so people apply it after levelling — or peel it off entirely, mistaking it for shipping film. One reviewer spent close to 20 minutes chasing bubbles and still trapped a speck of dust. A bubble inside the print area skews exposure and can wreck a print.

  1. Apply it right after unboxing: peel the shipping film, stick the protector, then level. Not the other way round.
  2. Degrease the screen and shut the windows so there's no dust moving in the air.
  3. Peel back a third of the backing and line the edge up with the bezel before you commit.
  4. Push bubbles from the centre outwards with a plastic card through a soft cloth, slowly.
  5. Keep spares on the shelf — they cost almost nothing next to a panel.

Resin leaked under the vat: what to do, step by step

Most torn films are torn by their owners, and it's always the same sequence: a cured chunk sticks to the film, you lever it up from a corner with a scraper, that spot gets a tiny stretched dent, and a few prints later the dent becomes a hole. The M3 Plus owner who tracked consumption hit his first leak after six litres of resin, and that vat-and-screen stack is identical on the base M3.

  1. Stop the print and lift the vat out immediately without draining it — every minute resin sits on the panel makes things worse.
  2. Blot the liquid with a cloth. Soften cured resin with an alcohol-soaked cloth and lift it with a plastic scraper. Never metal on the panel.
  3. If resin reached the screen protector, peel the protector off with the cured layer and stick a fresh one. That's what it's there for.
  4. Replace the release film — printing with a punctured one is not an option.
  5. Run the paper exposure test to confirm the panel survived.

There's a technique for lifting a stuck cured sheet that saves films: don't lever from a corner. Undo the vat bolts, lift one side about a finger's width, press the underside near the edge with your finger, and catch the lifted edge from above through the resin with a plastic scraper. The other approach that works: expose the whole floor for 10 seconds and wait up to five minutes — the cured sheet usually curls its own edges up and comes out with tweezers.

Anycubic has no official spare parts left for the base M3

We walked the entire Anycubic store catalogue — 358 products — and filtered for anything whose compatibility list contains "Photon M3" without Plus, Max or Premium. Exactly two products qualify.

There's a trap on top of that: Anycubic runs a "for Photon M3" collection listing five items including a vat and a build plate. Open the product pages and there is no base-M3 variant inside — the collection is misleading. 3DJake's M3 spare parts page carries only two third-party flexible plates at 172×110 mm, €7.19 and €11.99. Consumables are the exception: sheet FEP and screen protectors sized for the M3 are widely available from third parties, and the easiest place to find both — along with 7.6-inch panels — is AliExpress.

Anycubic's wiki has no page for the base M3 at all

When something mechanical breaks, the first thing you look for is the official teardown. For the M3 it doesn't exist. The printer's wiki section returns a 404, while its neighbours are fully documented: M3 Max has seven pages (LCD, motherboard, motor, UV lamp, Z limit switch), M3 Plus has eight, M3 Premium has ten. Anycubic's own blog post listing the M3 series repair videos skips the base model too — all eleven videos cover Plus, Max and Premium.

What you get instead is the wiki's shared section written for the whole resin line: levelling, film replacement, exposure diagnostics, Z-axis maintenance and a breakdown of every print parameter. Exposure settings for the M3 do exist — but they live in the resin section, not the printer section, which is why most owners never find them.

The launch firmware drove the plate into the cover — update before your first print

This is the one M3 bug Anycubic acknowledged publicly. On the launch firmware the build plate rose all the way to the top after a print and pressed into the acrylic cover, leaving a resin mark on it. Their blog post from 5 April 2022 says it plainly: the firmware was updated so the plate no longer touches the cover, and you should install it before you use the machine. The change is concrete — post-print lift went from "all the way up" to a fixed 40 mm. Reviewers caught it on their own units: Tom's Hardware ended up with a mark on the cover, and 3DPrintBeginner noted separately that he flashed the new firmware specifically to stop the plate dripping resin onto the cover.

  1. Download the firmware archive from Anycubic's download page — there's only one for the M3.
  2. Unpack it and put both .bin files in the root of a USB stick of 8 GB or less. Not in a folder — the printer doesn't look inside folders.
  3. Insert the stick, power on, open the Print menu, select P_M30G2F_013_2203.bin and start it like a normal print. That flashes the screen board.
  4. When it finishes, run P_M30G2V_016_0228.bin the same way — that's the mainboard firmware.
  5. Do not cut power during the process.
  6. Power cycle and check the version under System → Info.

The firmware hasn't been touched since March 2022, and it has no version number

On the official downloads page the Photon M3 firmware block is a bare link reading "upgrade firmware" — no version. Its siblings are labelled honestly: M3 Plus gets V2.1.0.3 and V2.1.0.8, M3 Max V0.3.10, M3 Premium 1.0.2.1 and 1.0.2.6. Inside the M3 archive sit two binaries dated 8 and 10 March 2022. In more than four years the firmware has not been revised once.

The practical consequence is simple: there's nothing to compare against, so the build in that archive is the current one. One more detail worth knowing — every M3 file (manual, firmware, test models) is hosted on Google Drive rather than on Anycubic's own servers. While the links are alive, download the archive and keep a copy: there is nowhere else to get it. The manual, incidentally, is English only, version v0.0.3 — the M3 Max ships in seven languages, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese among them.

A small but annoying defect on the official downloads page. In the Photon M3 block, the link labelled "R_E_R_F.pm3" points at exactly the same Google Drive file as "upgrade firmware". You go to grab the exposure calibration test and end up with a ZIP of the firmware, which the printer obviously can't read. The community flagged this back in August 2025 and nothing has changed since.

The good news: the file isn't lost. R_E_R_F.pm3, 16.6 MB, sits inside that same archive alongside the two firmware binaries and the upgrade guide. Unpack it, pull the .pm3 out and drop it in the root of your USB stick. Don't rename it — the printer recognises the test by filename, which also means any model of yours named R_E_R_F will be treated as a test file. The separate TEST.pm3 link on the same page points at a different file and works correctly.

The R_E_R_F test itself is hard to read on the M3

So you've extracted the file. The next discovery is that it helps less than you'd hope. The test splits the screen into eight zones: sample 1 prints at whatever you set as normal exposure in the slicer, and each subsequent sample adds 0.25 seconds. At a 2-second baseline that's about a 12 % step between neighbours — a difference the eye barely catches.

One more thing adds confusion: on some units the samples fail from right to left, so number 8 disappears first rather than number 1. People match times to the wrong sample and then tune in the wrong direction.

  • Run the test twice: first with normal exposure at 1.5 s so the eight samples cover 1.5–3.25 s and the difference becomes visible, then a narrower confirming run.
  • Don't judge by overall looks. Judge by two things: how many small holes stayed open, and how many thin pins survived. Many holes and few pins means under-exposure; the reverse means over-exposure.
  • Verify the numbering direction on your own machine before drawing conclusions.
  • Or skip it and print a third-party calibration model — they read far more clearly.

The bundled TEST.pm3 welds itself to the build plate

The manual suggests starting with the test model on the bundled USB stick. Don't. In that sliced file the model sits directly on the plate — no supports, no gap, full contact area and a long bottom exposure. Getting it off without damaging something is close to impossible, and bending the plate on a brand-new printer stings twice.

  1. Open the STL of the same model in your slicer instead of the ready-made .pm3.
  2. Lift the model about 5 mm off the plate.
  3. Turn on auto-raft and auto-supports — it'll sit on thin contacts and pop off in seconds.
  4. Already stuck? Take the plate off and slide a thin window-scraper blade in from a corner. If that fails, pour boiling water over the removed plate: metal and resin expand differently and the part lets go.

USB sticks: nothing over 8 GB, and files must sit in the root

The M3 has no network and no memory card — USB is the only way in. And the requirements are stricter than people assume. Anycubic documents them in one place, but none of it made it into the printed manual that comes with the machine.

  • Drive capacity: 8 GB or less.
  • FAT32, 4096-byte allocation unit.
  • Files in the root only — the printer won't open folders.
  • Filenames in Latin characters and digits, up to 15 characters, no spaces or special characters.
  • Format .pm3 only. Files for the M3 Plus (.pwmb), M3 Max (.pm3m) or M3 Premium (.pm3r) will not load.

There's a nastier variant: the printer accepts the file and prints nonsense. Random blocks, ragged edges, a three-centimetre brick where a small part should be. Those are read errors from the drive, and the fix is to cycle through sticks until one works — one owner got there on his third. Another documented case: a 32 GB drive locked the machine up completely, and after a reboot the control screen came up blank white.

4096 or 4098: Anycubic mistyped its own spec sheet

A curiosity that surfaces the moment you shop for a replacement panel. Anycubic's product page says "4,096 x 2,560 pixels" in the marketing copy and "4K+ (4,098 x 2,560px)" in the spec table a few lines below. The wrong number got copied by Amazon, Chitu Systems, Smith3D and half the reviews, so replacement panel listings almost always read 4098×2560.

The truth is 4096×2560. You can read it straight out of the header of Anycubic's own R_E_R_F.pm3: ResolutionX = 4096, ResolutionY = 2560, pixel size 40.0 µm. The arithmetic agrees — 163.9 mm over 4096 gives 40.01 µm, and 102.4 mm over 2560 gives exactly 40 µm. None of this affects your purchase, since there's only one physical panel and a listing that says 4098 will fit. It's just a handy tell for spotting a seller who copied a spec sheet versus one who has held the part.

While we're here, one more claim worth correcting. Anycubic's own comparison page states that the M3 has "higher resolution, which results in smaller pixels" than the Photon Mono 4K. It doesn't: the Mono 4K packs 3840×2400 into a 6.23-inch screen for roughly 35 µm, while the M3 spreads 4096×2560 over 7.6 inches for 40 µm. The M3 wins on area, not on fineness.

Photon Workshop auto-supports don't lift the model and miss islands

The single most common complaint about the M3 isn't aimed at the printer at all — it's the bundled slicer, and six reviewers logged it independently. There are really two faults. First, the algorithm doesn't lift the model off the plate, so it builds supports into the part. Second, the island detector misses overhanging regions and puts nothing under them. The result is half a model held up and half floating, with cured chunks drifting around the vat.

  1. Manually raise the model 5 mm off the plate before auto-generating supports — that fixes half the problem outright.
  2. Afterwards enable Check Islands and drag the slider through the layers. Green means supported, yellow means connected but possibly hanging, red means floating and definitely needs a support.
  3. Tilt the model 30–45°: fewer flat cross-sections means fewer islands.
  4. For heavy models increase contact penetration depth and tip width. Don't overdo it though — those supports hurt to remove and leave visible marks.
  5. Hollow the model and add drain holes. Supports hold a light part far more reliably.
  6. If nothing else works: support the model in a different slicer, export the whole plate as one STL and use Photon Workshop purely to slice it.

Photon Workshop ships no profiles for Anycubic's own resins

A situation guaranteed to stump a beginner: you buy an Anycubic printer, fill it with Anycubic resin, pick your Anycubic printer in the Anycubic slicer — and the print fails. The software carries a handful of generic presets that don't correspond to the manufacturer's own resins. You only find out after a few failures.

The correct values do exist; they just live in a different corner of the wiki. Here's the official table for the Photon M3 at a 0.05 mm layer height.

Shared across every row: 6 mm lift distance, 3 mm/s lift speed, 4 mm/s retract speed, anti-aliasing level 1. Standard Resin+ and ABS-Like Resin+ differ: 6 mm/s up, 3 mm/s down. And there's a separate official correction: below 20 °C, raise exposure by 30 % and drop Z speed by the same 30 %.

Reviewer practice next to that table looks like this: 2.4 seconds worked well on Anycubic water-washable resin at 0.05 mm, 2 seconds on Craftsman Grey, while a clear Eco UV failed at 2.5 seconds and needed four. You can't reopen a .pm3, and the slicer crashes on export

You want to tweak the exposure in a finished file — the bundled R_E_R_F, say — and discover that Photon Workshop can't open its own sliced files. There's no calibration menu either: just File, Edit, View and Help. One owner's question about this is still sitting in the forums unanswered. A separate complaint: the program crashes specifically while writing the sliced file to a USB stick.

  • Exposure and bottom layers on a finished file can be overridden on the printer itself when you start the print — the quickest route.
  • For real editing of an existing .pm3, use UVtools: it opens and writes the format, shows the actual header values and can repair defects.
  • If it crashes on export, save to disk and copy to the stick by hand.
  • Files from the other models in the line won't work: M3 Plus uses .pwmb, M3 Max .pm3m, M3 Premium .pm3r, Photon Mono 2 .pm3n.

ChituBox Basic 2.x breaks printing on the M3 — 1.9.5 is the working build

Plenty of owners move off the stock slicer to ChituBox and walk straight into a regression. The symptom is distinctive: only four or five bottom layers stick and everything else cures as a pancake on the film. The same file printed fine on the older version. Migrating the old config doesn't help; suspicion falls on transition-layer handling and on the two separate lift-distance values.

Anycubic support has told owners outright not to move to newer ChituBox builds. At least four people described the problem independently across 2024 and 2025. One got prints working by setting every layer to 23 seconds — which is a symptom, not a solution.

  1. Roll back to ChituBox Basic 1.9.5 — the most reliable option.
  2. Or ask Anycubic support for their ready-made M3 configuration.
  3. Or switch to Lychee: for some owners it's the only slicer the M3 prints correctly from.
  4. If you stay on the newer branch, check that lift distance hasn't been cut, and print a test cube before committing to a long model.

A related quirk with the same root: when the file is sliced in ChituBox, the printer's screen shows an implausible time remaining. Owners report "00H34M" on a three-hour print. It doesn't affect the result, but you can't plan around that estimate.

What can still slice for the M3 in 2026

At launch owners were locked into the stock slicer: neither ChituBox nor Lychee had an M3 profile, and both took months to arrive. They did arrive — and then development stopped. In the Photon Workshop changelog the base M3 is last mentioned in V3.1.4, dated 21 June 2023, and it appears nowhere in the entire 4.x branch: every new resin profile since goes to the M7, P1 and Mono 4 families.

The M3 has no per-layer wait times, so the popular elephant's foot fix doesn't apply

The standard community fix for a spread-out base is to add a rest time before cure on the bottom layers only, giving resin time to settle. On Anycubic machines that's a dead end. Their file format carries a single global wait time applied to every layer without distinction — there's no separate value for bottom layers at all. The UVtools author puts it directly: Anycubic machines only have a global wait time affecting all layers, so the method doesn't apply to them. Double exposure of the same layer doesn't work either, because the printer can't expose twice in one position.

  1. Post-process the sliced file in UVtools: the Morph → Erode tool shrinks the outline of the bottom layers and removes the spread. This is the route the tool's own author recommends.
  2. Cut bottom exposure and make up the adhesion with layer count instead of time: more layers at a shorter exposure hold just as well and spread the base far less.
  3. Tilt the model so the first layer's area is small — then the elephant's foot lands on the supports, not the part.
  4. Don't chase it with wait times. The M3 simply doesn't have them.

Levelling: two messages that trip up everyone

The M3 levels manually via four screws and a sheet of paper — there's no auto-levelling, whatever some retailer spec sheets claim. The procedure isn't hard, but the printer throws two messages that confuse almost every newcomer.

  • Home first, then move Z to the bottom! — you pressed Z=0 without running HOME. The order is mandatory.
  • Out of zero area, setting invalid — after HOME you raised the Z axis by more than 3.6 mm and only then pressed Z=0. The printer rejects that as invalid.
  1. Take the vat out — you can't level with it in place, because you won't see the plate sitting crooked.
  2. Lay a sheet of paper directly on the masking LCD.
  3. Loosen all four plate screws and hold the plate so it doesn't flop over.
  4. Press HOME — the plate lowers itself onto the paper and settles flat.
  5. Press down on the plate and tighten the screws crosswise, three passes, with equal force. Never take one screw all the way down first: the plate skews on the threads.
  6. Press Z=0.
  7. Check it: the paper should pull out with noticeable resistance, and the same resistance on all four sides.

Two tricks from owners. First: instead of paper, lower the plate onto the bare screen and then raise it exactly 0.3 mm — repeatability is better that way. Second: if the carriage arm fouls the vat wall and won't let the plate reach zero, add one washer under each of the four screws holding the plate to its ball joint. Also keep in mind that the supplied feeler sheet assumes a 150 µm film — switch to 125 µm and your zero shifts. The upside is that the M3 holds a levelling job for a very long time: set it once and forget it for dozens of prints.

Below 20 °C the M3 simply stops printing

The M3 has no vat heater. In a cold room resin thickens, reactivity drops, factory exposure stops being enough, and you get the classic pattern: bottom layers hold, the model and its supports fall off, prints come out glass-brittle. Anycubic states the thresholds plainly: below 10 °C resin won't cure at all, and between 10 and 20 °C flow drops and exposure must go up.

  • Target 23–25 °C in the room; owners report printing at 25 °C and keeping 21.5 °C as the floor.
  • At 20 °C and below apply the official correction: exposure +30 %, Z speed −30 %.
  • Stand the resin bottle in warm water before printing — faster than heating the whole room.
  • In a genuinely cold room, around 15 °C, owners pushed bottom exposure to 40 seconds and normal exposure from 1.5 to 4 seconds, with a heater nearby.
  • Heat the room, not the printer directly — the acrylic cover warps under a directed hot airflow.

The factory 2 seconds punch holes through hollowed models

A narrow failure that leaves people baffled: the model comes out great, detail all present, but the side walls of a hollowed part have holes right through them. That's under-exposure on a thin wall. The factory two seconds sit right on the edge on the M3, and a slightly cooler room or a slightly darker resin is enough for the wall not to reach full cure.

  1. Raise normal exposure to 2.4–2.8 seconds. One owner went from 2.2 to 2.5 and the holes vanished entirely; the community treats 2.6–2.8 as the sweet spot.
  2. Increase wall thickness when hollowing to 1.5–2 mm — thinner isn't worth it.
  3. Use more than two drain holes and put them near the plate: two 2 mm holes leave resin trapped inside.
  4. Blow the cavity out and dry it after washing — leftover resin inside is what cracks the model later.

Prints stick to the film harder than to the build plate

Print finishes, plate is empty, and there's a cured slab on the vat floor. The M3 is predisposed to this: unlike the M3 Plus and M3 Max it shipped with plain clear film instead of frosted. Peel force is higher, you can hear each release, and the fresh layer's grip on the film often beats its grip on the plate.

  1. Anycubic's official correction for an empty plate: add 10 seconds to bottom exposure and 5 to the bottom layer count.
  2. Check film tension. Sagging? Tighten the frame screws. They loosen slightly over time regardless — that's normal.
  3. Increase lift distance: too little and the fresh layer never fully separates.
  4. Don't crank lift speed — a sharp yank tears layers and snaps models mid-print.
  5. Wipe the plate dry and clear any cured droplets: nothing sticks to a dirty plate.
  6. Mind the bottom exposure figure: the M3 has a laser-etched plate, for which Anycubic recommends around 25 seconds (wire-drawn plates on other models want about 40).

LED hotspots and a mesh pattern on top surfaces

The M3's light source is a LighTurbo parallel matrix of 28 UV LEDs at 405 nm. Anycubic claims 92 % uniformity and up to 30,735 lux, but photograph the raw light field and you see clear bright patches where the LEDs sit. The reviewer's phrasing is diplomatic: uniformity is "not the best but decent for most prints", and visibly behind machines with an integral light source.

Owners tie a separate complaint to the same cause: a regular mesh pattern appears on every top-facing horizontal surface — on any resin, with fresh film and fresh resin. The owner who documented it best has three other printers on the bench and sees the pattern on none of them.

  • Don't lay wide flat faces parallel to the screen — tilt the model 30–45°.
  • Drop layer height to 0.03 mm so more layers land on the flat and the pattern blurs out.
  • Keep critical parts nearer the centre of the build area, where the field is more even than at the edges.
  • Before an important print, run the paper test and see where your particular unit is flattest.

Stair-stepping on angled walls: 45° doesn't fix it on the M3

"Rotate the model 45 degrees and the steps go away" gets repeated everywhere, but on a specific machine it's often wrong. Steps disappear only at the angle where the vertical step matches the horizontal one. Anycubic gives the formula for it: the angle is the arctangent of layer height divided by pixel size.

So at the M3's standard 0.05 mm layer the magic angle is 51.3°, not 45. Exactly 45 degrees happens on this machine at 0.04 mm. If you'd rather not fuss with angles, just drop to 0.03 mm — the steps get noticeably finer and disappear to the eye.

50 mm/h on the spec sheet versus 11–17 mm/h in practice

The "up to 50 mm/h" figure and the marketing line about a 120 mm miniature in two and a half hours have not been reproduced by anyone. It isn't dishonesty so much as methodology: the headline number comes from the thinnest layer and the shortest exposure, while a real layer cycle is exposure plus wait plus lift plus retract.

Estimate by layers, not by height: model height divided by 0.05 mm, times the cycle duration. And don't chase thin layers for their own sake — one reviewer printed the same model at 0.02 and 0.05 mm and couldn't justify double the time. At 0.01 mm a part a few centimetres tall takes 10 to 20 hours.

Since we're on the subject of long prints: at the wall socket the M3 draws 3–4 W idle, and either 40 W or 61.1 W while curing depending on whose measurement you take (the higher figure was with roughly half the screen lit). That second number exceeds the rated 55 W, so a cheap timer socket with a decent power margin isn't a bad idea. How to cost out a print including resin and electricity is covered separately.

Z-axis noise and squeal: what to grease and what to tighten

The M3's Z axis runs on a single linear rail with an anti-backlash nut. Reviewers found no deflection during printing, but there's no margin in the design: any play or scoring shows up on the print as horizontal banding at a fixed height. Anycubic lists two standard causes.

  1. Apply grease to the lead screw and run the axis up and down a few times so it spreads evenly.
  2. Don't use liquid oil: it runs down the screw and into the motor. That's Anycubic's own warning.
  3. Check the screws holding the lead screw block with the supplied hex key — they work loose.
  4. Wipe the rail with a lint-free cloth. Yellow residue on it is grease mixed with dust, not rust — clean it off and re-grease.
  5. Anycubic's schedule: service the lead screw every three months, oil the rail monthly and deep-clean it every three months.

No air filter, no cover seal — the smell goes straight into the room

The M3 has neither a carbon filter nor a rubber seal around the rim: the cover just sits on the body. Reviewers agree you shouldn't put this machine in a room where you work or sleep. The standalone AirPure filters Anycubic sells separately help less than you'd hope: they're battery powered, charge over USB, need switching on by hand, and the charge may not last a long print.

The factory answer is the Anycubic heat-and-purify set. It's compatible with the base M3 and, unlike the printer itself, still sells: 658 g, ships with an adapter and instructions, replacement carbon filters come four to a pack. Nothing beats a duct to a window, though — what a resin printer actually puts into the air and what ventilation it needs is covered in our fumes and ventilation guide.

The yellow cover crazes on isopropyl alcohol and has nowhere to go

The M3's cover is acrylic and lift-off rather than hinged, which creates three separate annoyances. First: once you lift it, it has to go somewhere — usually the same bench the open resin is on. Second: some units arrive warped and never sit flush, with the top edge hanging in the air. Third and most expensive: acrylic is attacked by isopropyl alcohol and acetone, producing a web of micro-cracks and haze that grows over time.

  • Never clean the cover with isopropyl alcohol, and definitely not acetone. Mild soap and water only.
  • Soak baked-on resin in a hot alkaline cleaner, then polish with headlight restorer compound.
  • A badly hazed cover can be rescued by sanding 400→1200 and polishing, but it's better not to get there.
  • Decide in advance where the cover goes when it comes off — it's bulky and there's always resin on the bottom edge.
  • There's no official replacement cover to buy, so look after the one you have.

The small stuff that surfaces in week two

None of these is a reason to be upset on its own, but together they're what gives the machine its character.

  • USB port on the right side, power switch at the back. The stick sticks out sideways — leave a few centimetres of clearance when you plan the bench, or use a short extension to bring the socket to the front.
  • The power switch sticks. One documented case had the printer fully resetting after four layers and running only while the button was physically held in. It's a standard rocker switch and swaps for any equivalent; until then you can power the machine through a switched socket strip.
  • The vat only comes off if you fully remove two bolts. On most machines loosening them is enough. Keep a magnetic dish for the bolts and clean the threads in the base periodically — resin cured in there skews the vat.
  • The plate's laser etching wears down. Use the plastic scraper for removing prints and keep the metal one for emergencies. The plate top is angled to drain, but a small pool still collects on one side — blot it after every print.
  • The cover's front wall is angled. Print to the full Z height and the top of the model ends up very close to it. Put tall models towards the back of the plate.
  • The 2.8-inch touchscreen is resistive. It needs a press, not a tap — that's the design, not a fault. But if it stops responding or goes white, the usual cause is resin that ran down the front panel and ate into the digitiser. Unlike the masking LCD, this part is findable from third-party sellers.
  • No network, no camera, no resin level sensor. Level is judged by eye against a max-fill line on the vat wall, and remote monitoring simply doesn't exist. Retailer listings that credit the M3 with Wi-Fi and auto-levelling copied the specs from a different model.
  • No power-loss resume. If the mains flicker, the print is gone and you start over. Resume only arrived with the successors, the Photon Mono 4 among them.

Message reference: what the M3 shows and what it means

The base M3 has no numeric error codes — it prints text messages. Codes 300–314 that turn up in the Anycubic wiki don't apply to it: they describe vat heating, automatic resin feeding, a strain gauge and a Wi-Fi module, and the M3 has none of those. What M3 owners print for their own machines

Nobody sells accessories for the M3, but some of them you can print — on the M3 itself or on any FDM machine. The community around it is tiny, with the most popular models sitting at a few hundred downloads, but they plug exactly the gaps the manufacturer left.

  • Vat lid (June 2022, 418 downloads) — resin stops collecting dust and stray light between prints, so you don't have to pour it back every time.
  • Build plate drip mount (April 2024, 346 downloads) — the removed plate sits angled over the vat and drains back into it instead of onto the bench.
  • FEP frame for sheet film (February 2025, 257 downloads) — the most valuable model for the M3, because it solves the sealed-cartridge problem.
  • Vat storage cover (February 2023, 229 downloads).
  • Nobody has published a fume hood or enclosure for the base M3 — if you want forced ventilation, you're building it yourself.

Buying a used M3 in 2026 without ending up with a paperweight

New units are gone: the printer is sold out on Anycubic's own store, its M3 series collection is empty, and retailers list it as discontinued. The live market is second-hand, and the maths is unforgiving. A replacement masking LCD runs about $60 from Chitu Systems when it's in stock, which is a substantial fraction of what a working used M3 goes for. One screen swap can double your cost of ownership.

And the panel degrades from sitting idle, not just from printing — there are listings where the LCD stopped lighting parts of the field after the machine spent a long stretch switched off. So "barely used, sat in a cupboard for two years" is a warning sign, not a selling point.

If that's more conditions than you want to deal with, look at the current models — the successors fixed exactly the faults described above. The Photon Mono 4 has a 17 µm pixel instead of 40 and resumes after a power cut; the Mono M5s needs no levelling at all and self-checks its own subsystems. M3 myths worth dropping

  • "Just buy a bigger FEP sheet and trim it." Doesn't work: the base M3's film is sealed into a non-opening frame, so there's nothing to clamp a sheet to. Frame first, sheet second.
  • "Drop in an Elegoo Mars or Photon Mono X vat." It won't seat: the M3 vat is bolted through its own body, and other machines mount differently.
  • "Use an M3 Premium or Saturn 2 panel." Wrong bottom glass dimensions, and the M3 Plus and M3 Max panels are physically larger.
  • "Wipe the cover down with isopropyl alcohol." That's how covers die — acrylic crazes and hazes.
  • "The base M3 has automatic resin filling." It doesn't. That's the M3 Plus and M3 Max.
  • "The M3 has Wi-Fi and auto-levelling." Some retailers list both. The machine has neither.
  • "You can't get a screen for the M3 anywhere." Out of date: Chitu Systems, Amazon and AliExpress all carry the panel. Stock is the real issue, not existence.
  • "Add a rest time before cure on the bottom layers." Anycubic machines have one global wait time for all layers — there's no per-layer setting to add.
  • "The M3 famously can't read USB sticks." Threads with that headline are about the Photon S, not the M3. The M3's limits are real but documented: 8 GB, FAT32, root directory.
  • "Anycubic says the M3 has smaller pixels than the Mono 4K." The opposite is true: 40 µm on the M3 against roughly 35 µm on the Mono 4K.
