Hardware: what actually changes your prints

The stock textured PEI is good, but PLA needs it warm — and in an enclosure that's extra heat exactly where you don't need it. Cold-adhesion plates (BIQU CryoGrip Pro, Bambu Cool Plate SuperTack) are rated 30-50 °C for PLA, printed right on the sheet. A P1S owner in the plate thread says it plainly: the printer and the room run cooler, and he no longer needs to crack the door open.

18. Chamber heater — for ABS, ASA and nylon

In late 2025 a post titled "the P1S exhaust fan is not an exhaust fan" pulled 1,790 upvotes: the author tried venting ASA fumes out a window and watched smoke at the rear grille get pulled inward. Days later came a 1,291-upvote rebuttal: its author believed the first post, tore off the rear panel, flipped the fan, stripped the sound insulation — and got the same result, because the test itself was the problem. Smoke outside the grille tells you nothing: the carbon filter creates turbulence that muddies the picture. You have to check flow direction from inside the chamber.

The practical conclusion doesn't change: the P1S system is recirculating. It pushes air through a carbon filter inside the chamber and cuts the smell, but it does not evacuate volatiles from your room. Difficulty: beginner for a kit, intermediate for a strip plus relay. Cost: $9-20. Note: don't aim the strip straight into the camera lens — glare wrecks the image worse than shadows do.

25. Software: slicer, smart home and a desk monitor

The most underrated P1S upgrades cost nothing and need no screwdriver. OrcaSlicer (v2.4.2, released 7 July 2026, 15k+ GitHub stars) gives you what Bambu Studio doesn't, and in LAN-only mode plus developer mode it connects to the printer directly. The Home Assistant integration (2,272 stars, updated July 2026) exposes print status to your smart home, so you can kick on a fan when a print starts. And a desk monitor built on an ESP32-S3 costs $6: firmware flashes from the browser and you don't even need LAN-only mode, just the printer access code.

Difficulty: beginner (slicer) to intermediate (no soldering, but ESP32 takes some reading). Cost: free plus $6 of hardware for the monitor. Easiest place to start is the slicer — we have a full OrcaSlicer settings walkthrough.

Advice that's still online but no longer works

Half the "20 P1S mods" videos were filmed in 2023-2024, and some of that advice will only cost you money today. All of this was verified against primary sources in July 2026.

  • "Install X1Plus for root, SSH and Klipper." The project is alive (1,017 stars, commits in June 2026) but only runs on the X1 and X1 Carbon. It does not install on P1, A1 or P2 at all.
  • "The BIQU Panda Cyborg board is coming, you'll run Klipper on the P1S." Announced November 2025. As of 29 July 2026 the BIQU product page shows $0.00, Sold out and zero reviews. You can't buy it.
  • "Get the Bambu Extension Board and drive your exhaust via G-code." The wiki manual page is now titled "Bambu Lab Extension Board Manual (End-of-Life)" — the product is discontinued.
  • "Panda Touch is a must-have screen for the P1S." Compatibility is stated up to firmware 01.08.01.00; current is 01.10.00.00. On new firmware the screen becomes a status display.
  • "Fit the Bambu auto fire extinguishing system." The official FAQ lists compatibility with H2D, H2D Pro, H2C and H2S only. There is no P1S version.
  • "The rear fan is an exhaust — just duct it out a window." The system recirculates. Testing flow from outside is pointless: the carbon filter creates turbulence and the smoke test lies.
  • "Lubricate the carbon rods so the carriage moves easier." The official wiki forbids oil and grease on the X-axis carbon rods of the X1 and P1. Isopropyl alcohol at 70% and a clean cloth, nothing else.

Where to start: a sensible order

  1. Purge bin and hotend connector holder. Free, prints on night one, saves you hassle every single day.
  2. Top glass riser. The biggest PLA quality gain available for zero money.
  3. Cable chain clips and PTFE guide. Pennies of filament against a scratched glass panel and a worn tube.
  4. A real nozzle wiper. Five dollars or free — cleaner first layers, fewer blobs.
  5. Hardened nozzle and gears. Buy them before your first roll of filled filament, not after the nozzle is already shot.
  6. A cold-adhesion plate. Less chamber heat and far easier part removal.
  7. ObXidian or Panda Revo hotend. When you've hit the flow ceiling or you're tired of wrenches and heat-up cycles for nozzle swaps.

And the thing the community keeps repeating: no mod replaces maintenance. Cleaning the carbon rods every 5 kg of ABS or ASA, greasing the lead screws, checking belt tension — those twenty minutes buy you more than any upgrade on this list.
